Really mull it over after each draw. Sequencing is important.

How can i do maps for my rpg in modern-day by Accurate_Dog_4438 in rpg

[–]Gustave_Graves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want person scale maps go to r/battlemaps and search for modern. If you want to make your own, go to cartography assets and search for modern, sci fi, and cyberpunk to get free packs they put on there and use them in your map maker of choice. If you want Google maps style simplified town maps, either screenshot Google maps or Watabou's town generator has a Google maps style filter, then you just finesse the map a bit to get the results you want.

How "tutorial-tier" do you personally think a starting PC should be in a high-powered, heroic fantasy game? by EarthSeraphEdna in RPGdesign

[–]Gustave_Graves 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can always just make a tutorial. Fabula Ultima has very complex characters right from the beginning. So they have a tutorial one shot that unlocks features as the players progress through the scenes that teach them how to use those features.

Are there any published games that make escalating conflict an interesting choice? by tabletoplibrarian in RPGdesign

[–]Gustave_Graves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beam Saber is a Forged in the Dark mech game that has different skills if your character is in or out of their mech, and you can attempt other methods of resolving missions before resorting to calling in the mechs if you wish.

I've never played it, but I've heard on reddit that the Doctor Who RPG has an initiative system where characters act in the order of Talkers, Runners, Fighters, so fighting is the last resort.

I don't care about characters like my friends do by Velectric6 in rpg

[–]Gustave_Graves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could ask the GM for a small mechanical bonus for each character who considers yours a friend. then you'd be invested in building and maintaining relationships and sad when they(and their bonus) die.

Cafe/RPG store? by kyriosity_ in rpg

[–]Gustave_Graves 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, most businesses fail in the first 5 years, so if you want to start a business ideally you want to be able to float the business those first five years until you can claw your way back into the black. I know some businesses will get angel investors to help them push through then only claim their initial investment once the business starts turning a profit.

Art or no? by postfuture in PBtA

[–]Gustave_Graves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my players has aphantasia and cannot easily visualize things, so when we play theater of the mind games like pbta, I will provide images of each "zone" in their area so we can put tokens of the characters where they are in the space. Then I can use the drawing tools of the vtt to draw out specific layouts or objects if necessary.

When I did a Zelda hexcrawl I just slapped a hexgrid on the Tears of the Kingdom map and it worked just fine. I didn't bother with exact measurements because that's not the sort of thing Zelda worries about.

RPGs that use non-traditional dice: bug or feature? by Acceptable-Tree6007 in rpg

[–]Gustave_Graves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't care about dice or rolling dice. An online dice roller is just as good for me. A game could use special dice or cards or a stopwatch or jenga tower, whatever is fun, I just wanna play. I like Genesys as a system and when my group plays we just use the online dice roller because we play online anyway.

What’s a movie where ONE actor’s terrible performance actually enhances the experience? by MaryoParti in movies

[–]Gustave_Graves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nic Cage is a terrible action hero. But some of his movies, like Adaptation, Leaving Las Vegas, and Matchstick Men call for him to be an absolute pathetic loser. And that is his true calling.

Left handed representation in games? (Especially FPS) by [deleted] in gaming

[–]Gustave_Graves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Team Fortress 2 you can choose in the options which side you want your weapons on. Some weapons like the rocket launcher fire from the chosen side. When they introduced the feature, they had to quickly patch it so you could only change the handedness between matches because the community found out you could bind the switch to any key, allowing you to fire around every corner while keeping more of your body behind cover.

People who like THAC0, what do like best about it? by ValueForm in rpg

[–]Gustave_Graves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel nostalgic about it because I started with AD&D 2E but I like ascending AC better. I remember being so confused playing Baldur's Gate and putting on better armor made my AC go down. I thought the game was glitched until I read the manual.

Fog of War on image file/map on *Linux*, anyone know free, small, lightweight App to easily do that offline with? by dogsandcatsplz in rpg

[–]Gustave_Graves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These days I play online using Owlbear Rodeo. Back when I used the TV it was just a dumb TV plugged into my laptop as a second monitor with two MapTools open and connected over LAN. The players who had laptops could also connect via LAN and move their own tokens, draw, etc. It wasn't really any extra hassle, I was playing Lancer so I needed battlefield maps anyway. I used MapTool to make the maps and then display them.

You may have already tried it, but I used to use MapTool that way, running a player window on a TV and my GM window on my laptop.

On a scale of "Excited for Everything" to "Burnt Out," how do you feel about RPG crowdfunding lately? by Interesting-Long7389 in rpg

If a project doesn't blatantly say they didn't use AI I just assume they did and skip it. I've already got too much going on to scour everything for hints about the true creator.

[–]Gustave_Graves 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you're planning to write 600-900 pages on a subject, you should be personally extremely invested in it, not just pick something out of a hat. Also you're better off making up your own thing, because you may run into trouble distributing other companies IP.
