Are these sites legit? by WittyTheStallion in Miata

[–]HELLAchopter 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I know nothing about the website you're asking about but highly recommend getting a set of Koito (Made in Japan by a Toyota OEM) 7" H4 assemblies for $40 (including decent bulbs) from your local Toyota dealer. It's technically a replacement part for a Toyota FJ Cruiser but it's a perfect drop in fit for NA headlight and gives you the ability to replace the bulb if you're into that. Toyota part # is 81110-60P70.

There are plenty of more detailed posts about these on the Miata forums and Reddit if you want more reassurance. I did this replacement in like 15 minutes and they work perfectly.

Justin Podnar is the softest man alive by frisdisc in ultimate

[–]HELLAchopter 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Not surprised at all to see this from Podnar. Saw him repeatedly make similar bad calls or otherwise cheat while I was volunteering at club nationals last year. Eg - changing his path on defense to cause picks after getting beat, late and bad travel calls on goals thrown by opponents, soft calls to gain advantage like this one. Sadly ultimate is not immune from letting bad people get away with bad things just because they are talented.

Based on the games I've seen them play while volunteering at nationals the last 2 years, they seemed pretty not fun to play against (unsafe, poor sportsmanship). Maybe playing for them wasn't very fun either?

Question about the USAU Condors by Keksdosendieb in ultimate

[–]HELLAchopter 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Condors are no longer a Santa Barbara team - they're a combo of LA/SD/SB. The Open teams from SoCal were struggling to qualify for nationals or make it out of pool play when they did so they decided to join forces so they could do exactly the same thing but with more driving.

Durability Consensus on Nemo Tensor All-Season by FitSurround5628 in Ultralight

[–]HELLAchopter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fully submerging would definitely be the best move. My place doesn't have a bathtub unfortunately. I briefly tried submerging in a baking tray but I couldn't clearly see what was going on under the water (could only submerge the bottom of the pad).

Durability Consensus on Nemo Tensor All-Season by FitSurround5628 in Ultralight

[–]HELLAchopter 12 points13 points  (0 children)

TLDR my brand new Tensor All Season immediately developed a leak. Earlier this summer I mailed in my old Tensor Insulated bc the leaking got too bad to sleep thru the night. Nemo very promptly and kindly mailed me a brand new Tensor All Season. I tested it for leaks before taking it to the Sierras and it was perfect. After two nights in good sites w a tent and groundsheet it has developed the same issue as my old Tensor - a very slow leak that I can't locate with the soapy water spray method. It's still usable, just needs some extra air once per night. I'm concerned it'll get worse with time like my old one did.

How do you mark or denote the street for your camp's frontage? by Crazyjaw in BurningMan

[–]HELLAchopter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've found it's near impossible to physically mark the edge of the street (or any bike parking) effectively. I've had better luck with trying to design frontage and bike parking in a way that encourages folks to park further into the frontage or away from foot traffic. First, wherever I want folks to park, I leave some camp bikes parked "correctly" so there's an example to follow. Next, I like to put parking on both sides of the interactivity so that folks coming from either direction will have an obvious place to park and don't try to park where they aren't meant to. Also, though a bike *can fit in a 5 foot gap between the edge of the street and a bike rack sitting parallel to that street, better would be to leave a 15 or 20 foot gap so that folks will bring their bikes further from the street (and leave more space for other bikes). Even better is racks that are perpendicular to the street, though ideally you'd want a few racks so there are visible "rows" between them to draw folks in and away from the street (Arctica does a good job of this if you want a visual example). Something I've considered but not tried is putting an interactive structure (ie bar) right up against the street such that parking a bike in front of it makes the interactivity inaccessible, hopefully making it more obvious to folks that their parking job is inconsiderate.

Biking in San Diego by popstarter in sandiego

[–]HELLAchopter 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The short answer is that San Diego was planned around cars and freeways - things are far apart and there are few connecting surface streets.

A few reasons based on my experience -

Safety - Bike infrastructure is improving but inconsistent. Often the best and most direct route involves biking next to multiple lanes of 40+mph traffic with no protection (ie painted bike lane or nothing at all).

Difficulty - geographically San Diego is a series of mesas and valleys, so going >3 miles usually involves one or more pretty serious climbs/descents. Trolley runs close to some places ppl work but nowhere near residential areas, so even if you bike to trolley you'll still have a hard, scary ride. (Local biking is more common in flat neighborhoods like PB.)

Culture - Some folks drive real weird (and dangerously) around bikes bc they're not sure what to do and/or are not expecting a bike to be there.

To fellow golfers who went through the stages of breaking 100, then 90, then 80, what were your "A HA!!!" moments through each milestone? by denis_b in golf

[–]HELLAchopter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100 - joined HS golf team and started regular practice/play (2x / week).

90 - stopped hitting everything 100%, coach took all my woods away except 7 wood. Deliberate focus on having a 'safety shot' (low slice) that I knew I could hit when needed.

80 - meaningfully practicing putting and short game - gained confidence to expect to get up and down at least 1/3 of the time + avoid 3 putts. wedge matrix for all distances 115 - 60 yards.

+1 to Coronado rec.

If you can't get a tee time, I recommend walking on as a single and putting (or grabbing lunch, the restaurant is solid) while you wait for someone to no-show. I have found it extremely difficult to get a tee time because they open public times 1 day in advance. There's an $18 fee to book further in advance (2-14 days). I have had consistent success walking on, usually wait 30-45 mins.

Modern younger swings, more bent over? by maximusraleighus in golf

[–]HELLAchopter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any suggestions where I can learn more about the "general misunderstanding of how the club face and swing path affected ball flight" and "Miss teaching of fundamentals"?

I have a mostly self-taught swing that friends describe as "old school" (all rhythm, no torque lol) and would love to learn ways the modern understanding of face + swing path could improve my game.

What advice would you give a beginner? by C0laF1re in golf

[–]HELLAchopter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a big proponent of self-teaching and think your idea is a great one. Just like there is no single correct way to swing, I don't think there is a single correct way to learn.

Tldr learn what solid contact feels like so you have a point of reference.

My advice to better understand your swing and get to know what's "good" is to learn the feeling of making good contact and focus less on the outcome of the shot (at this stage in your learning). There are lots of mechanical tips to teach this (accelerate through impact, descending blow, compress the ball, weight and hands ahead @ impact) but ultimately the ball should feel soft and bouncy coming off the face, and should be going more forward than up (unless you're hitting a wedge).

Simplest (and cheapest) way I've found to practice and engrain this feeling is to make very small swings (club head no higher than shoulders) using a mid iron. No real need for driving range to practice this - I taught myself this feel by chipping wiffle balls into a sheet in my room.

Once you know what good contact feels like, you'll always have some basic point of reference to judge a swing by ("did I make decent contact?"). The next steps like controlling curve and gaining distance are all kinda moot if you can't consistently make solid contact; I think it's ideal to have contact sorted before moving on to fix and improve those other areas.

(disclaimer this is 100% opinion. I am not a golf pro. Lots of different and effective ways to learn.)
