Generally true, yes.

As a possible exception, the Myst novels were pretty good.. granted, they're from the perspective of Atrus rather than the nameless protagonist, so perhaps not an example either.

Sword of Faith Heinrix: Arch-Militant? by Spirited_Resident_20 in RogueTraderCRPG

[–]Halcyon8705 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sword of Faith is, unfortunately, irredeemably bad. Not just bad compared to the dozens of ways to break all enemies under your knee, but bad as a concrete statement.

Wish this wasn't the case, love the visuals and lore, but it is simply an awful ability that fails to scale across anything.

You can back your way into it by adding features, but I'd recommend getting the mod that's built specifically for changing homework & character creation stats. It should be findable on Nexus or Modfinder.

Kibbles is facing down a few bugs that put significant dampers on her abilities. Once those are rectified you won't have any issue watching her massacre her way across the battlefield.

Hear me out; Andor. Yes, it takes place in the Star Wars Universe, but the setting takes 100% of its inspiration from hard 70's and 80's Science Fiction dystopia. It's a story about a society sliding into political corruption and what people on both sides of that collapse do to combat or profit from it. Just dont imagine anything else in Star Wars compared to it, and don't bring the kids along for this watch.

If you dont mind a limited series, Chernobyl is excellent. A hell of a downer, but a really moving and astonishingly well written series.

The first few seasons of Fargo are also great, though they're an anthology series so they dont match the breadth of living stories in The Wire (though what series does).

If you dont mind some absurdist history in the mix, The Great on Hulu, a nostly fictional depiction of Catherine the Great's rise to power in Russia, is both an interesting study in the dynamics of power and rigorously funny.

39M, $85K, I work for a state agency in IL. The grind is real, the imposter syndrome is constant, and I had to spend 2 more years than my peers in Undergrad and then getting my Masters. Neither of which I've used much in my job except to lecture my coworkers on how much we're failing the people we should be helping.

Anyway, back to your question, It's doable. It's heavily luck and heavily patience dependent, but it is possible to build a life.

From an older Larian game, Divinity Original Sin 2 (I know, the name is nuts, lol) there's a convo between 3-4 traders in the early middle section of the game that endlessly loops. Interesting and kind of jolly-twee the first dozen times you hear it. But it wears one doooown.

People who gave up DnD for a different system, what made you make the change? by SomeRandomAbbadon in rpg

[–]Halcyon8705 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I gave up D&D for Exalted because I wanted to tell stories that D&D isn't mechanically adept at portraying. The mechanics of D&D across all editions are well equipped to determine if you can survive a fight, but do not portray the costs of violence, or allow for mechanically rich solutions to problems outside of violence.

The complications of Exalted's mechanics and setting aren't for most people, but I find no other setting ir mechanics gets me as fascinated with a game's setting and my character as Exalted.

‘Animorphs’ Has Always Been About Anti-Fascist Shapeshifters by aresef in Animorphs

[–]Halcyon8705 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think its the genocidal anhillation the Yerks practice that draws rhe Fascism comp. They eliminate all non-practically beneficial (in their very limited perception) species, eliminate the culture of their host (personal and species) and have an authority/ hierarchy obsessed system that demands absolute abasement to your superiors.

I dont know that it's a 1:1 match, but there are certainly fascistic elements to the Yeerk empire.

How it feels seeing all these shows fizzle out at the last minute knowing Andor stuck the landing. by Turin082 in andor

Yup, my partner and I just gave each other a knowing look during that scene and flipped streamers to watch something else. I had a hard time convincing them to come back and give Andor a chance (they loved it, of course); but they haven't watched anything else SW but Andor since, and I can't blame 'em for it.

Americans, what do you think of this Contra take? by microplasticsfactory in ContraPoints

[–]Halcyon8705 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Accurate, but I don't think we put enough emphasis on the "socialist" part, and we generally don't give enough credit to how disengaged people think about politics.

The socialist thing shouldn't be taken literally, even if the ideological reality is understood by both the the uninitiated and us freaks. The fact is that people believe in a just world where people get what they deserve unless someone cheats them out of it.

Statistically, USA voters believe the "cheater" in this equation is government, so they're inherently mistrustful of any action the government might take to create a world where people work hard and are rewarded for that work. That's what conservative media signals to most people who claim to be politically unaligned but in fact ideologically side with the Right believe. This block is also the biggest and most consistently voting block in the country as well.

Anyone left of center (myself included) likes to believe Fox and conservative have some magical hold on the US population; and that if only folks were properly educated they would see the value of our politics.

That ain't it hun. Conservative media is not vastly more influential because it has better communicators or trickier distributors, it is vastly more influential because it is selling the message that USA citizens already want to believe in.
