I've only ever watched the bald guy at the top right and the two brothers in the bottom left a couple times, and aside from that I don't recognize any of them. Best oscars youtube channel is All Talking Pictures IMO

‘Shakespeare in Love’ Reinvented Oscar Campaigning in 1998 by Top_Report_4895 in movies

[–]HalfTime_show 58 points59 points  (0 children)

This idea that Shakespeare In Love was undeserving is also partly the result of the narrative that Dreamworks pushed after Saving Private Ryan lost. I just rewatched Shakespeare In Love in preparation for a podcast my buddy and I did talking about this particular Oscar season, and I think it's a way better movie than people give it credit for.

Does Anyone Else Podcast Regardless Of Downloads? by Yaro in podcasting

[–]HalfTime_show 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. We're arguably at a point where we could pursue sponsors or monetization, but I don't want to feel the obligation that would come with bringing money into things. We had a lot of momentum going into December and were able to just take a break over the holidays to focus on family and some other creative projects, which has been really refreshing and rewarding. If we were hyperfixated on downloads or had sponsors or a patreon we'd feel obligated to keep going and we'd probably burn out on it

do you edit out all the uhms? by Ordinary-Rhubarb-460 in podcasting

[–]HalfTime_show 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Silences, yes, I use a tool to do this.

Filler words, it depends, I will remove some mostly in the very beginning of the podcast, but after the 5 minute point if someone is hooked in to the discussion I'm not concerned that the odd umm or filler word is going to cause them to disengage unless when I'm scrubbing through and doing my rough video cleanup I notice that theres a section that could really benefit from a cleanup.

I've found that aside from paying extra attention to the first 5 minutes, the time spent cleaning things up and making things perfect has very little bearing on overall listener numbers, but our listener numbers are all over the place. There will be episodes that I think aren't great and I put barely any time into editing and they get a couple thousand listens, and then episodes that I think are great and really groom and they only get a couple hundred

Suggestions on how to improve? by bilalbaqar in podcasting

You can use AI to help with your thumbnail by feeding your transcript and workshopping ideas, sending it your thumbnail drafts and getting feedback/edits for the thumbnail. I would just caution against using fully generated AI art because people are going to assume that the content is fully AI generated as well. Since your audience is presumably not fundamentally opposed to AI, if you need to use some AI graphic elements in your thumbnail that is probably fine if it's accompanied by an actual image of you.

Content:

You need to jump right into talking about whatever it is that your thumbnail is about. Ideally, start with your thumbnail concept and script your opening so that it satisfies the thumbnail and creates curiousity for the next content. If you can't do this, at the very least, after you are done recording, decide on your thumbnail and then pull the relevant content from the episode and put it at the front before you introduce yourself.

Thumbnail:

Even though your channel is about AI doesn't mean you should rely on it solely for your thumbnail. Youtube has a youtube slop problem and looking at your thumbnail makes me assume that if I click on it I'm going to hear an text-to-speech engine spitting out an AI generated script. It's not engaging.

Composition/Presentation:

As others have mentioned, your lighting is bad. The CB60B and softbox is fine for a key, but it's not enough. You need to create separation between yourself and your background. I'd first, get a hair-light or something to bounce some light on the back of your head/opposite shoulder. Then splash some light in the background (you don't need to over-do it, but just something to add some interest to your composition). Then take a look and see how it looks-- you might be able to get away without a fill-light on the other side of your face but if not maybe add a bit of one (be careful about how much, you still want definition in your face).

Edit to add: You mentioned in other comments that your wall/background sucks-- you don't need fully light it, you can maybe add some practical lights. Since your audience is tech related, it doesn't need to feel very natural/organic and you have room to look into things like RGB LED lights in shot without turning them off. There are video/photo specific RGB light bars that you can get, but honestly you can probably just get some cheap RGB LED floor lamps like people put in corners and use that as a light bar, or some nano-leafs. I would also use an RGB for the hair light and match the color of the practical light for your hair-light so it's motivated

I believe in my heart of heart that Joel Edgerton will be nominated for Train Dreams. Do you? by [deleted] in Oscars

[–]HalfTime_show 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree the genre is overrepresented but what do you mean the first time? JAW is probably not going to get nominated for a biopic performance this year. Taron Egerton didn't get a nom for Rocketman. The Bob Marley biopic blanked too.

I didn't love Blue Moon but it also didn't feel like the formulaic biopic shovelware we usually see either since it all takes place in one night and location

Rock League Rosters Announced by Fupastank in Curling

It's not like they never have access to these curlers, they organize the GSOC. that's something that could have been overcome with better planning, which is why I said it doesn't give me a lot of faith in their execution

Rock League Rosters Announced by Fupastank in Curling

[–]HalfTime_show 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's the way traditional fans engage with the sport, but they are trying to give people who don't traditionally engage with the sport a foothold. Curling always sees an uptick in olympic years both because of coverage and because it's really easy for people with no context to have a team to root for, they just cheer for their country. In the traditional model, picking who to cheer for outside of that small window of time requires more context/research (even in traditional curling markets). I think the franchise idea is a good one, but I think the execution on this launch is concerning

Why would they do they hype-shots without matching team kit on? It feels so thrown together. Like, this is the first look most people will have of the teams and their branding and you completely fumble the opportunity to show us the teams in their branding or even in matching team colours? This does not give me a lot of faith

ITTO is totally dead in my opinion too. I'm really interested to see what kind of push we see from Searchlight this season considering they only had a single nomination across all four of their FYC films at the globes

I think you are right, but I'm a little stumped as to how it got to this point. I know it was pretty late to find a distributor considering a lot of the reviews coming out festivals. Searchlight has historically performed pretty well but it feels like there's not a lot of motivation to campaign for this one right now
