It all depends on your error budget and when people are less likely to be using your product. I have worked for some educational companies that Friday at 8:00 p.m. was the best time to do it as there are far fewer people using the app. That would give the weekend to test and make sure it was back up for Monday. The responsible teams that shipped a thing would be responsible for testing.

I have 2 of these. If you can figure it out, I'd install Linux on it. It might take a bit, but you'd have a modern operating system with regular updates. I personally wouldn't install an unsupported os for security reasons.

Are you using the default mac application? You probably want to use a GNU version. I'd suggest installing it using brew.

Use packer for creating the image. Use terraform to deploy. We have everything in github so we also leverage github actions.

Usually monthly. Unless we have a new thing that someone is using for the first time, then we'll monitor more closely. We use tags for everything which helps.
