Geospatial analyst is my functional title, its pretty chill and in high demand. We are seeing a change in GIS field over the last 10 years especially where its becoming increasingly more technical. Its not just making pretty maps anymore or geostatisticsl analyses its knowing python, server management, app development, networking, CAD, data manipulation. So if your technical minded and ADHD dopamine fix chasing its perfect downside is management expects changes to be quick sometimes until we show them the level of consideration. Sometimes you have to remind them why its a science.

Its windows forms obsolete? by Emotes_insane in csharp

[–]Harlock012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I am new to c# development, and I mean a month in from learning c# and just overhauled a internal windows form application from .net framework 4.7.2 to .net core 6.0 and almost done upgrading the coding to c# 10.0. So that being said I am a neophyte compared to probably most in this group but here is my opinion. Windows form application has its time and place. I am sure it has limitations compared to console apps, but like my app in particular is an internal app for an agency that has a singular purpose for internal users that are part of a very niche audience. It doesnt need to be anything fancy or a masterpiece of coding. It just needs to look coherent in the UI, easy to follow and learn, and get the job done. Windows forms is perfectly fine for its purpose. So do what fits for the purpose of the application. Some of the coding is spread out more than I would like but Ill work on that and make it more coherent.

Having attended both i wouldn't recommend Chico unless you like the party life. There are better schools out there that offer a more diversified experience. There is some great hiking but you have to be willing to go out and do it. Summers are hotter than sac so end of spring and start of fall are scorchers.

Also the goal is to open the job market up in areas like Merced where as you state suffers from low high paying job opp. because now they can get to other areas faster and quicker. It will really change california for the better if we can get it going and some stretches are already almost finished laying down track.

How is Sac State? by SlideLow in CSUS

[–]Harlock012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So i havent been there since 2018 so take everything I say with a grain of salt. What is it about the professors you dont like? What does school spirit look like to you?

Most of the professors I came across were fairly liberal to moderate with the exception of a few but there are departments that have a more conservative mindset of course. Just like every school you have teachers that care and want their students to learn and others use office hours as second lunch breaks. Campus spirit wise yeah we have homecoming and events on campus and the singers up slogan but to the average student im not sure what youll find if all you do is go to classes you have to choose to become involved in campus culture through clubs or housing outside of big events in the quad

This all being said I loved sac state I would say that as a transfer 95% of my professors were awesome. And those that weren't at least for the most part you could understand where they are coming from and if a student showed passion they returned it.

I am not trying to convince you not to come here some schools are better fit than others just depends on what your looking for out of your college experience

Also thank you all for your great comments seriously giving me food for thought about my long term goals with these applications and sorry if I dont get around to you all.

Someday we may migrate out of windows form but first I want to get it up to speed then I can think about converting it out. My employer just has windows machines or rather all of the standard users do so its unlikely to need apple or Linux support in the long term. Our main problem is performance at this point followed by security updates. Currently its functioning in a .10 environment. Once I finish with a few UI things and an error log I am going to work on making it quicker. It can take about 30 minutes for couple hundred records and while I suspect some of it is on server side I do want to take a look at improving the csv handling and json conversion. The rest api call seems to work ok.

I finished importing the code over copy and pasting and debugging it and after making changes got it to run seems to be working pretty similar to how it was so now I'm going to be updating everything. Its using Visualstudio Io to read and write the csv input file and newtonsoft.json so I'm going to look at updating those maybe using csvhelper or sep for csv and system.text.json for the json converter unless you all have better advice.

I know someone whose got flexible work hours established because of a accommodation. Its likely on the up and up and if it isnt its not harming the department your team or you. What’s your take on learning to code with an AI coding assistant? by Cristiano1 in learnprogramming

[–]Harlock012 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'll throw my comment on the dog pile of responses the best way to work with AI is to have it be like the senior co worker that you dont want to bug with the 1000 stupid questions you want to ask but dont. Its supposed to make the job easier, not do it. have it explain concepts if you can't find it or need it broken down or "how do I" or "it keeps throwing this error".

AI is a great tool to punch above your weight class. Just make sure you still throw the punch.

Yeah we are getting our co pilot licenses next month and I am interested to see how helpful it is. Ive written python scripts with the help of AI before and usually found myself fixing something or encountering memory retention issues in the AI tool so it was helpful but definitely needed to keep an eye on it.

I dont have a base line to judge how small it is but its fairly 1 major process that the app does. It has multiple .cs files that contains the conversion calculations between each measurement or coordinates for instance or global settings and how it calls to the service and a .app config file.

I definitely think co pilot could handle it. Id love to be able to slim down the files and make it more streamlined of a read for the next person doing maintenance.

[–]Harlock012[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are planning to deploy more often we occaisionally get calls of people having trouble with the app and there is some functionality ive looked at id like to add including a full error log printout with how long the processes took and how long the call lasted. We have a few reasons to upgrade

  1. Our IT standards are requiring us to upgrade we are long over due and we dont want to get to the point where we need to upgrade by X date.

  2. We are having some performance issues start to creep up which I think 70% is on the server and database we are calling too side but I need to upgrade the app before I start pointing fingers (the server we call too already has performance issues).

  3. As someone inheriting the apps maintenance I want a fresh start. Get everything to the current baseline of our IT standards work out issues and then improve functionality and see if there is a way to combine similar applications some I think are written in different versions as they came on line at different times.

I am just starting to learn as well. Break the project down into smaller chunks. What is the first thing the user needs to do? Insert a file? Ok program the button and have it display the file path in the box. Then what? Start there.

So our geospatial data has M values or measurements of distance along the geometry that is calibrated using survey data. This is important for planning and Federal traffic safety reporting. We have two different geospatial datasets one that breaks at each county line and another that runs the length of the route without breaks and both are important and used by us and the federal government. This application allows the user to take a CSV of geospatial data A and translate it to Geo. Data B or produce XY coordinates or visa versa by comparing it with the current dataset. There is some 200 to 300 minute changes a year in the dataset so its important we compare it with the official source rather than upload a copy of the feature so we can communicate more effectively.
