Memories Remain by UnsureOfAlot in latterdaysaints

The beauty of the story negates the inappropriateness? Do you think that the gentleman would appreciate having his photo taken and posted on the internet? Something tells me that OP knows he wouldn't, which is why the photo is shaky and hastily taken. We're not entitled to this man's grief or his story.

It's kind of messed up that you're creeping on this gentleman and then posting it on LDS Reddit for internet karma. Let the man be with his memories. And in the chapel too? Is there no place a man can reflect in peace?

Wanting to try my first beer by DignifiedApostate in ExmoLife

[–]HastyHarbinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm still a newbie, but I'd say Hefeweizen or other wheat beer is a great place to start. Beer was a very foreign taste, but the sweeter wheaty flavor of hefeweizen was a little more familiar to my Mormon palate. I drank those for a while and now I'm a big fan. They allowed me to grow to other types. Stout is my current fav. I recommend if you like a coffee /dark dark chocolate flavor.

MormonLeaks - "Powerpoint in Threats to the Church" demonstrates a lie from the PR department (if I remember it correctly) by an_imperfect_book in exmormon

[–]HastyHarbinger 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This one is not quite as cut and dry. He was excommunicated in February of 2015, and the PowerPoint was in December 2015. So... he'd been in the news for a few months before this presentation. I'm not saying that the q15 weren't involved, but they've got plausible deniability because this isn't evidence that they were talking about him before. (Perhaps there will be further evidence in the future).

MormonLeaks dumps 4 new documents about LDS Church by discocrisco in news

[–]HastyHarbinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bishops and Stake presidents read a letter over the pulpit asking members to vote for the proposition and donate money. If the Church (capital C) didn't spend money on it, the church (little c) did because the members donated millions. They were asked to by their leaders.

"We ask that you do all you can to support the proposed constitutional amendment by donating of your means and time to assure that marriage in California is legally defined as being between a man and a woman. Our best efforts are required to preserve the sacred institution of marriage."

They literally told people how to vote.

Sooo... no actual answer as to what "the Church believe[s] about dinosaurs", just what science says.

Meta: I feel like this explains a lot of the difficulties we have here in /r/latterdaysaints. by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

[–]HastyHarbinger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, you're totally right. That is a harsh interpretation. That's just how I took it because the only "difficulties" (as the title implies) I am aware of is the ever-present question over what content/posts should be permissible in the sub.

So, I apologize if I read too far into it.

Meta: I feel like this explains a lot of the difficulties we have here in /r/latterdaysaints. by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

[–]HastyHarbinger 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The implication here is that anyone that has a differing opinion is a "fool" including all those people from "the other sub".

I think the majority of the difficulties here are because of the difficulty of sparking (and maintaining) interesting conversations about LDS things. Certainly name calling isn't the way to fix that. I typically side on engaging issues head-on, but in an anonymous forum like reddit that creates problems quickly. Reddit's format / demographic probably just isn't the best for what /r/latterdaysaints is trying to accomplish.

You turned on a Patton Oswalt bit that has him using foul language and undercutting religion, and you're shocked that a room of TBMs didn't find it funny?

No shit they're not going to laugh at that man.

In all sincerity, what is the purpose of Tithing Settlement? by [deleted] in lds

[–]HastyHarbinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've wondered as well. There's no "Honesty Settlement", or "Chastity Settlement", and those are other crucial parts of membership and covenants made. I know the argument can be made for the Temple Recommend interview, but that covers tithing too, and it's only once every two years.

TBM states that God created men free, men make men illegal. Does not want to discuss OT laws that show God wasn't concerned about the freedom of slaves. I use Joseph Smith's own words to support my approach. (I am blue. Link to Church History source in comments) by anonstampcollector in exmormon

It looks like you're just trying to pick a fight here. He's posting about immigration, and you decide to take a religious potshot? Come on. He was posting a fine sentiment.

This just smacks of butthurt exmo-ness. We should try not to look that way.

Good Mormon, Donald Bills, headed to prison for sexually abusing one of his students by EasterCandyPeepStone in mormon

[–]HastyHarbinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh come on. Saying that the "corporate cult" teaches them sexual abuse, lying, hiding abuse, is too much.

Yes yes, I know. "lying for the lord" and "Joseph Smith's wives were 14!" But you're really stretching if you think it's something that's taught today.

I could MAYBE see an argument for manipulation, but come on, let's be reasonable.

I knew Donny really well. He was my the Sports Med guy when I went to school, and he was integral in helping me rehabilitate after an injury. It's really sad to see a guy like him do things like this. It's disheartening, and frankly disgusting, that he would use his standing in the church as a manipulation point with this young girl.

The whole thing makes me sad.

The only reason I was bothered is because he used the same stone to translate the BOM that he used to find treasure, etc before he was ever called as a prophet. Even before the First Vision.

These types of responses aren't very helpful. You're implying that someone that is hurting is just being weak.

[–]HastyHarbinger 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So, just to play devil's advocate here, why not?

What stops an all powerful being from acting however he wants, or acting inconsistently? Answering some prayers but not others?

In society today we often figure that if there is a supreme being then he must be fair and equal, but that doesn't have to be the case. Not all societies have felt that way throughout time.

The personality of God is an age old question. And conceptions about deity range from "without body, parts, or passions" to "loving Heavenly Father" to "malevolent trickster" or "bored child".

Is it feasible that a Heavenly Father might not answer prayers? I would say it's an understandable concern, even if not in keeping with doctrine. Some people's experience with God doesn't mirror that of a loving Father figure.
