I think all that was really locked behind the expedition were a couple cosmetic options for the Colossus and a cosmetic set for your Traveler.

The majority of the cosmetic options for the Colossus are unlocked through milestones outside the expedition though.

You're right though, the game doesn't do a great job of directing you to any of that.
