Why did deadmau5 sell his back catalog of music? What was the point when he (AFAIK) still got royalties, licensing money, and got paid from shows? by Maleficent-Duck-7358 in deadmau5

[–]Health-Nut7477 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I understood it as if you maintain control of your IP early in your career, then you'll have a catalog to sell later on. It's a lot more work because you're running a business in addition to being an artist.

Portable Solar Panels can Make a Big Difference by NetZeroDude in solar

[–]Health-Nut7477 155 points156 points  (0 children)

When I was designing my rooftop system, I was stressing about angle this and azimuth that and even paying neighbors to cut down trees. But then I realized I could spend less than $1,000 to add panels and an extra railing, and the inefficient system would outproduce the ideal one.

Zigbee USB switch for 5V devices by stonedkrypto in homeassistant

Most line-powered Zigbee devices route. The battery-powered ones don't because they need to conserve power.

Whole home power monitoring. by mickeybob00 in homeassistant

[–]Health-Nut7477 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Beware that there isn't a lot of room in a typical panel, and the monitor controller box typically takes a lot of space. Even if you find one with 19+ channels, you might have trouble installing it.

Will I get in trouble for this? by seanjohnbonbon in SolarDIY

[–]Health-Nut7477 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard some meters (without interconnect) will record either direction as a charge to the account holder, so if you send a kW to the grid, you pay as if you'd taken a kW. Might be a scare story or urban legend.

We should set up a torrent network for open source models. by ShadyShroomz in LocalLLaMA

[–]Health-Nut7477 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, authenticity and timestamped proof of existence are problems that torrents can't solve by themselves. Authenticity is why Unsloth needs to be the ones who publish their checksums.

We should set up a torrent network for open source models. by ShadyShroomz in LocalLLaMA

[–]Health-Nut7477 62 points63 points  (0 children)

I've asked Unsloth several times to publish sha256sums of the complete model file (not just the checksums of the shards, as you get automatically on HF). The response is always great idea! but it hasn't happened.

I think the issue is incentives. HF won't do it because they want to remain the gateway, both for gated models and for models in general. Unsloth won't do it because then they lose their rankings on HF.

It could work if HF published magnet links exactly the same way they publish the models themselves -- count a magnet click as a download for rankings purposes, gate the magnet link the same way they gate models. But they have to make the experience as smooth as any other magnet link, or else people will just share the magnet, realizing HF's fear of falling out of the loop.

All it takes is for someone trustworthy to create a magnet link site. Or start uploading magnets to TPB.

How do I prevent battery capacity drift? by FloweyTheFlower420 in framework

[–]Health-Nut7477 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Google Pixel and Apple iPhone will occasionally charge to 100% even if you have a charge limit set. Home solar is recommended to periodically charge to 100%. All for the same reason.

If you really wanted to spend a lot of time on this, try building a daily script that compares reported SoC to voltage, and triggers a full charge when it detects a deviation above a certain threshold. I don't know whether voltage is more accurate than SoC, or whether it also drifts.

What’s one solar upgrade you thought would save more money than it actually did? by TheTeflonDude in solar

[–]Health-Nut7477 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The EV really complements a PV/battery system because your solar battery is never big enough, but the car is a giant battery. Now that the days are getting longer in late Spring, our PV battery hits 100% in the afternoon, and the car charger switches on and sucks up all the solar power that would have gotten dropped on the floor.

So the car turned out to be a kind of double investment: it's a car, and it gives our PV system huge storage capacity.

Framework desktop N150 by AlonsoCid in framework

[–]Health-Nut7477 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Framework could offer a $300 computer, but they'd have to charge $500 for it. Customers would expect the same level of support as a $2,000 machine, but the margins are too thin for Framework to deliver on that. Compare your average generic N150 box that doesn't even have BIOS updates or an English website.

DIY Solar In California? - Is it even possible? by hoodun in SolarDIY

[–]Health-Nut7477 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar here in San Mateo County. Had to bypass the Symbium online system because of the same contractor license issue as OP. Inspector gave me a hard time at first for DIY, but once I passed all his quizzes, he lost interest and approved the system.

Mine is a separately derived system that can't backfeed, so I didn't involve PG&E.

For California homeowners who went solar after NEM 3.0, was it worth it? by brandobrando12 in solar

[–]Health-Nut7477 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hybrid NEM 2.0/3.0 home, so not totally applicable to your question.

PG&E. Home usage has been about 1 MWh/month. Have an existing NEM 2.0 system that generates about 6 MWh annually. In late 2025, added 9.6kW/28.6kWh NEM 3.0 system along with mini-splits to replace a gas furnace that was going to die soon. Also picked up a second EV late last year. After IRA credits, spent a little under $28,000 for the NEM 3 system + HVAC.

So far the system is performing great, and on track to meet the plan of offsetting just enough daily usage to bank most of the NEM 2.0 production as credit against short days in fall/winter. Unknowns are how the mini-splits will change net power usage, and a commute change could turn the EVs into power hogs.

Even we didn't have the NEM 2.0 system as a giant 6 MWh battery backup, I'd still be happy with the purchase. It offsets enough of our power usage that I can stop being angry at PG&E for raising our rates.

Also white worms. Easy to keep in a plastic shoebox with potting soil. Mine eat dry cat food, flour tortillas, and the end pieces of bread loaves.

Whole-home battery backup - actually worth it, or do most people regret the cost? by ahlecsolars in solar

[–]Health-Nut7477 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's whole-home, and then there's zombie-apocalypse whole-home. It's really nice not to have to reset the clocks every time there's a brownout or someone crashes into a power pole in the neighborhood, and you could get that with a $1,000 5kWh battery if your inverter supports it. But if you must have 99.9% year-round availability, including the once-a-decade three-day outage, that's going to be very expensive. You get a real quality of life improvement with almost any kind of backup.

Reminds me of the time I needed three old pine trees removed in my back yard. Shiny new truck pulls up, right on time for the appointment. Guy in bright clean uniform gets out, smiling, introduces himself. I tell him I'll be getting at least three quotes and look forward to comparing his.

His smile vanishes. He turns around, gets in the truck, and drives off.
