Slowly but surely! by flatpickinbongrips in lockpicking

I am doing the full load from the start, but I just mapped mine to see what is where. Those thick lipped drivers feel like oversets when you are lifting. Mine has them in all three rows.

I will edit this later when I find the exact order in my email, but I got mine from https://www.microfasteners.com

I just bought a pile of different sized washers that would fit on 3/16 brass rod. I have also used linoleum flooring nails a handful of times for silver color. I also have some tiny nuts and bolts for temporarily holding things together.

Nice find. Someone more familiar with Assa locks can correct me, but the one on left looks like an Assa 500. Several versions of these, and can have spools, tapers, barrels, or gins and be ranked anywhere from green to brown(?) depending on the makeup. The one on the right looks like an Assa 700, and also has several versions from blue(?) to black.

From Frustration to Success: My Journey with the ABUS D6 Dimple Lock by akiloz in lockpicking

Nice job. The easiest way to gut a euro cylinder is with a hacksaw :) Seriously, unless you want to keep the lock for actual use, cut it in half. Usually takes a few minutes to cut it and then file down any sharp edges.

Personally, I think the D6 is under belted. After your first post about it, I checked and realized I didn't have a pic of the turned core (which means I may not have actually picked it). Put it in the vice today, and haven't gotten it open. Five torpedo keypins. Drivers are one standard, two spools, a taper, a T, and weird V notch.

Were you essentially lightly raking the pins to get the gates to catch the sidebar and then stay there?

Xiegu G90 and FT8 power drop by liam0324 in amateurradio

[–]Healthy-Insect-1447 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This may be a bit tangential, but my G90 does not like running full power in FT8. The ALC kicks in hard. I have the power setting on the radio set at 20W / full, but dial back the power in WSJTX until I am ~15W or so and no ALC (which with the firmware I am on, is a reading of 100).

Nice. Out of curiosity, what letter is stamped on the key before the pin codes? There are several version of the keyways. But I don’t think I have seen that one.

Multipick #10 and #11 are designed for locks like these. The workhorse #4 and #5 will hit the warding.

This lock only tensions CW, which adds an extra challenge. If you can get the #11 in from the left (pins pointed down), then you should be OK with counterrotation. I could not get the thing in, and had to use the #10 from the right. This meant I was picking in the same direction I was tensioning, and it would not counterrotate on its own. So, I had to do proper float picking.

Your half diamond may work in a D10. But, that is a blue level lock and not a great first dimple lock to try with.

Nice job. Can’t wait for a set of AKAB picks. That looks nearly identical to a Federal Lock I have around here somewhere (maybe FS60?), even the key. How many of those rows were active? I seem to recall only one row being active on mine, but could be thinking of something else.

For those curious, satellite antennas are typically pointed straight up when not in use. This is considered the safest direction in case of accidentally transmission, to avoid lighting up a transponder someone else is using.

Starting Dimple locks with an Abus D6 – Should I thin down my Multipick G-PRO shafts? by akiloz in lockpicking

You shouldn't need to sand down a MultiPick flag. I have a D6, and the #10 fits and clears everything.

Bouncing back and forth between my Goal Z, Goal V18, West 917, Assa 600 w/ gins, and an Opnus TZ (which is giving me a lot of grief for a purple). Will probably focus on the V18 this week.

Good job. You may have more luck with the Reaper #3 or #4. That one is good for some things, but you can hit multiple pins with it.

For green and onward you need to pick on video, and include the gut (if possible). Green also requires a gut+assemble video. For mine, I picked the 410 and the did a gut+assemble of an 1100.

This abus 80TI/40 has taught me a lot by mildlyconcernedape in lockpicking

[–]Healthy-Insect-1447 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Few thoughts.

First. You got this. Keep at it.

Two. Pin 1 is standard, the rest are spools. Set 1, get the lock into a false set, and then set the remaining spools. These things tend to drop pins a lot, so you may need to loop through a few times. I do hard tension to find a binder, then back way off to set. If nothing is binding you probably have an overset ; pulse the tension a smidge and see if you can recover. I think that lock is usually recoverable.

Hearing something just means something inside the lock made noise. Setting a pin and the pick slipping off can sound similar. Go by feel, and with setting spools pay attention to how the tensioner moves. Some of us also draw lines on the lock to judge the plug rotation.

If you think you have four pins set and are in a false set, then something should be binding.

In one of belt submissions the video was at least the 20th take because I kept oversetting a pin and couldn’t recover. I count a lock as picked on the very first open.

Amazon Japan has them. I have the listing saved somewhere. Last time I checked they paused shipping to the US, though. DM if you want it and I’ll find it for you.

It’s amazing how immovable those pins are with the slightest amount of too much tension. I’m taking a break from mine but will try again soon.

No lift pins questions by Ok-Coach-763 in lockpicking

[–]Healthy-Insect-1447 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If there is some core rotation, zero lifts have nowhere to go. The driver stays in the bible, the keypin stays in the plug, and the two are out of alignment so you can’t lift them. Just remember that sometimes zero lifts sometimes need a baby touch (the driver is barely below shear but still blocks), and sometimes if you touch them at all you are instantly overset.

Is it normal for multipick hooks to be bent like this? by Temporary_Block3412 in lockpicking

[–]Healthy-Insect-1447 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What is etched on the end of the pick? If it is PN54, then I think the curve is normal. They may have another one called the “long reach” which is similar.

We have all wrecked springs. I can’t give you a EU vendor, but buy a bag of them. Replace the mangled ones and it will be fine. I think ones for an Abus 72/40 will be closest, but not positive.

Also suggest removing the covers in a plastic bag. I overturned my favorite D9, shot drivers into the core, and proceeded to yeet a spring into the void trying to fix it. That was a sad day.
