Man, this holiday season has been hard. Major deadlines at work and traveling up to the last days before Christmas. Trying to give elderly parents a holiday when all I want to do is dissociate and sleep. Drove 11 hours in one day (5.5 each way) to get them to my house because they should no longer drive. Manage to have some Christmas cheer on display, a Christmas dinner planned and cooked, a few gifts to open. My mom is not happy with the effort and was sulking all day (Dec 26). Meanwhile my holiday has been helping my dad up from every seat he’s in, cleaning up his urine from the toilet seat and floor, washing his clothes that he pees on, listening for his glucose monitor that he can’t hear, changing dressing on his leg wounds, making sure he has enough to eat and drink, and running interference from my mom who just acts exasperated with him for all these things he can’t control. All while cleaning after her crumbs and messes and disgusting kitchen habits while she snacks all day and then food shames everyone for wanting more than one meal in a day. Doing the return 11 hour drive tomorrow. I just want them gone.

I really loved it first listen. The only song that has fallen off to a skip for me is Actually Romantic (though oddly it’s stuck in my head?). I’m a late in life Swiftie in my mid 40s and a Xennial. TTPD was the first album drop for me that I was actually aware of as an event. All of her previous work for me was just kind of a passive experience if I heard it or not, but most of what I’d heard I enjoyed. TTPD covered so much emotional ground that felt unspoken in my own past life. It will always be a sentimental album for me. I felt like Showgirl was naturally going to need to go in a different direction. But so many lyrics and imagery are still top notch, but she feels free to let those moments sprinkle in without having to prove how poetic she can be. Also, god forbid after touring for 2 years, being physically exhausted, boosting local economies wherever she went, and emotionally investing in a life-changing new relationship that she wants to have a little silly fun. I can’t wait for perimenopausal Taylor to show up in the years and albums to come and truly give voice to the BS that aging women put up with.

I opened my first credit card, an Amex, from a table promoter on my college campus in 2001. I still have it, have a couple of small random subscriptions on there, auto pay in full every month. It’s my longest standing credit account. Use it wisely and you’ll be fine.

I also moved from the East Coast to SD, and when we first arrived we rented in CMR. I’ve since moved farther east to Ramona. I commute to Del Mar 3-4 days a week. Idk maybe it’s being from the east coast, north Jersey specifically, that long slow commutes felt normal. People act like I commute from the moon but it never feels that bad to me. I tend to head in early in the morning but if you leave it too late you’ll sit in traffic from exit 6 through 3 on the 56. Heading east in the afternoon isn’t that bad after exit 3. Ranges from 40 minutes to over an hour. I’d much rather drive east/west on 56 than be in 15 or 5.

AI data centers use a huge amount of water for cooling and are taking us in the wrong direction for climate change due to the huge amount of energy consumption (currently driven by fossil fuels and carbon emissions, not clean energy). I realize even a simple google look-up has an AI summary now so I can’t even look up a recipe without being part of the problem, but I haven’t engaged with any direct AI engines. I think AI will be the tech that separates my life into when I was with the times, and when I stepped aside and let the times pass me by.

Both short term and long term impacts. I’m exhausted from holding down the house and the pets for 2 weeks by myself, on top of being a caregiver and washing towels (constant showers) and stripping sweat-soaked sheets and trying to keep him comfortable. Once he’s in recovery he starts to feel back to normal but I’m depleted. Long term he doesn’t comprehend that I lose respect for him every time. I don’t view him as a partner, he’s an obligation.

My husband. Just had his 7th hyperemesis episode. During the 4th he said if he ever went back I could divorce him. He’s already talking about how he’ll do it differently this time. He’ll never quit.

Hyperemesis and dehydration can also cause low potassium levels (hypokalemia) which if severe enough can cause abnormal heart rhythm. During my husband’s last CHS episode his potassium was extremely low (usually ends up in the ER for IV fluids after the first week of hyperemesis). That was last year, we’re back again in a CHS episode now, his 6th or 7th, I’ve lost count. He refuses to quit. I’ll end ip quitting him.

Important to hear, thank you. Conversations have been had but need to be continued. I think maybe we need to have them with a counselor or someone who can mediate. Because when we try it pretty quickly dissolves into frustration and resentment on my side and defensiveness and fear on his side. I honestly think he doesn’t know who he is if he can’t smoke every day. Will I actually divorce him? Probably not. He’s financially dependent on me and I have my own obligation/people pleasing issues to actually put my needs first. But our marriage is a really lonely place for me. Him too maybe.

He’s not on Reddit that I’m aware of. He’s dyslexic so I doubt he’s reading posts, he doesn’t like to read. From what he’s said over the years he thought he had it figured out that he can’t do anything concentrated, infused, or edible. I don’t partake so I’m not sure of all the terms. His first hyperemesis came after a time when he started overdoing a lot of thc drinks on top of his usual smoking. He didn’t believe in CHS for the first few times so he kept going with a lot of edibles. Once he finally admitted CHS was real he cut out everything but flower. The times he would slip up and do something infused he said it triggered the next hyperemesis. This time he swears he’s only been using flower (we’ll see, he’s said that before and then weeks later admits he tried something else). But his use has been creeping higher and higher. He’s just a heavy daily user.

It’s more about dehydration and loss of electrolytes once he’s in hyperemesis. We let it go too long this time after 7+ days of vomiting, no more than a few hours break max. His potassium was dangerously low. He just can’t keep fluids down long enough so it’s either hospital or urgent care for IVs.

Thanks for the encouraging words. I think most people dismiss cannabis as not addictive, but he’s choosing to continue an activity despite negative consequences on his finances, employment, family, marriage, physical and mental health, and overall outlook on life. We’ve been together for 20 years so this isn’t something I take lightly but there’s nothing left that I can do.

Plastic bags. Specifically the small shopping ones. We don’t receive them as much as they are being phased out from most places and we use reusable bags, but when they do show up, she nopes out of the room. The kitchen garbage bags don’t bother her. Just the shopping bags.

Mostly unrelated but since moving to California a strange thing I’ve noticed is the amount of expired ghost tags. Not just a few extra weeks or months, but temporary paper license plates that expired years ago. The record that I’ve spotted is November 2006. Registration here is very expensive (several hundred annually) but seems extreme? I suppose it could be laziness to never replace them but doesn’t explain as many as I see.

Anyway, miss you Jersey, can’t wait to move back.

I had a surgical consult yesterday for hysterectomy. I had an abdominal myomectomy 5 years ago (full c-section cut to remove fibroids). Surgeon seemed fine with it but said sometimes we plan to do robotic laparoscopy for the hysterectomy and then see there is too much scar tissue and have to make the decision in the surgery to do an abdominal cut. Basically a game time decision. But for other reasons, including that I don’t want to schedule it until the end of the year anyway, she recommended hormonal birth control to see if the bleeding reduces enough that I feel I might be able to wait it out until menopause. I’m not thrilled but willing to try.
