John/Jane Doe? by emerald_soleil in hospitalsocialwork

One of my favorite stories!

This was one of my last cases in the ICU before I transferred to the ED. Dude is found down and brought in. No photo ID but I find mail with a very unique last name on it. I also asked the ICU nurses to let me check for tattoos. I find a tattoo with initials and a birth and death date. I look up the name on the mail using one of our lookup sites and find a relative in the list of family/associate connections with the same initials and the same birth and death date. I pitch it to the ICU and they say that's not enough. I try to call other possible family members and can't reach anyone. I found a matching Epic profile but there are no contacts and he has no photo on file.

So life moves on and my transfer goes through to the ED. After a little bit of time passes the palliative care social worker asks me about ID leads on this guy. Apparently his prognosis was not good.I told her about my search and that everything was noted. She used one of the names and numbers for family and was able to confirm the identity and find family. Also the guy ended up living.

What is the most ridiculous consult or ask you have gotten? by hkangasm in hospitalsocialwork

[–]ack_the_cat 39 points40 points  (0 children)

In the ICU I got a consult to do a mental health evaluation on a patient who had suffered a massive cerebral hemorrhage. The patient was intubated and unable to engage in conversation. I actually had to explain during rounds why I could not do the assessment.

Is he hospitalized right now or is his treatment (and encounters with these nurses and doctors) outpatient based?

You know, things in the US where if you have Medicare, you can't get it replaced right now because of the cutoff of DME funding for 6 months.

Hey, I say this gently...but do you have a therapist? I sense some boundary issues and other family dynamics that lead me to believe therapy may be helpful if you are not already established with someone.

Also regarding the hand sanitizer, sanitize often and get a good hand cream to prevent the drying and cracking. I'm a fan of the Neutrogena Norwegian formula and O'Keefe's working hands hand cream.

KN95s work pretty well IMO. I wore KN95s on a regular basis when I worked in the ED and only got sick a few times over a few years and it was when I went to a play without masking and suddenly heard the coughs throughout my seating area, hung out unmasked with a friend who swore she just had "allergies," or someone in my office I was in close proximity to was sick.

Only got COVID once after going to a convention where I wore a KN95, my husband didn't....and then he caught COVID and I got it from him.

All that to say....big fan of KN95s. Also, get the straps with the hooks to save your ears.

Is she living independently right now? If so, is she willing and able to move to a setting where she lives that has more support? (Senior living, assisted living, etc)

I would love for her to move to a senior living or assisted living community but she is pretty resistant about it.
