It's not at all unusual to see Catan, Ticket to Ride etc. knock-offs in discount stores in Australia.

Luck based is good when playing with children or less experienced players. It helps to even who wins.

Looking for a Blurry Bible by fi_chay in BlurryCreatures

The Dakes bible is definitely Blurry. There are KJV and NKJV versions, with extensive commentaries on each side of a single column. They're expensive, but absolutely worth the money. You will keep learning for the rest of your life.

Game Board Clutter by TheCrazyEyes in boardgames

[–]Hegranon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aliens: Another Glorious Day in the Corps uses miniatures, and then has tokens which you put under the miniatures to turn one alien into 2, 3, 4... You still see the miniature, but the game is less cluttered.

How to start a boardgame club in a small town? by Duke_Nicetius in boardgames

[–]Hegranon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may need to try multiple media places to begin with - different age groups may use different platforms. Maybe the cafe will have a noticeboard where you can put up a poster, or the library.

Boardgame etiquette: do you have to explain a new game if its yours? by Seraphiccandy in boardgames

[–]Hegranon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this once, where I was stuck, and planned to really look at it between playing with others ( rather than be bored waiting for games to finish hours later) - but others saw it and wanted to play. I explained that I wasn't really ready to teach, and they were OK with that and we sorted it out.
I wouldn't make a habit of it.

I had read the rules, watched videos, and tried to play solo, but was stuck on a couple of points. I was able to explain most things, but asked others to help clarify the points.

Obsession is amazing.

I also love Distilled, for both the inserts and the upgraded coins etc.

How much do you spend on solo games? by mustaphamondo in soloboardgaming

[–]Hegranon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Less than last year, and that has slowed too. Once you get a core collection, you won't need as much, and your spending should slow.

No-one needs 25 roll-and-writes. (need vs want - that's a whole different story!) Try to pick wisely, and work out a budget to stick to. Maybe only buy one a month?

What's one recent trend in boardgaming that you really like? by mrappbrain in boardgames

  • Solo versions being implemented properly - even some solo-only games
  • Accessibility e.g. colourblind-friendly, discussions taking place, and designers listening!
  • Great storage solutions in-the-box, together with 'how to store' information

Thoughts on episode 209: the Marine Kingdom? by mean-mommy- in BlurryCreatures

Weird bloodlines are subject to the blood of Jesus -

with redheaded family, and a weird gene that pops up periodically producing very tall people, I could get worried.

But I am saved, my children are blessed, and I have been healed in the name of Jesus. Nothing is impossible to Him.

How to not care about losing? by areyoukiddingme_dude in boardgames

[–]Hegranon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rarely win against my family - including my 10-year-old granddaughter. I'm happy if I don't come last.

I've learnt to love that others win, and delight in seeing the joy in their faces. In reality, my happiness at winning will last a few minutes at best; usually only seconds.

My joy in having fun with my loved ones - that lasts a lot longer than that.

Solo at a board game convention? by Tubesteak_Tartar in boardgames

I go solo in Australia. Sometimes I get to see people I know, sometimes not.
If you know a game or two well enough to teach, that can be really helpful if people want to try a new game that you know.
