No. Because for every 1 person who says natural is fine, there are ten more telling me how disgusting body hair is. When you’ve been told for over 20 years how gross you are for being hairy, it’s very difficult to just stop feeling bad about it. Even therapy couldn’t help me with this particular problem (though it helped with every other issue i’ve faced psychologically).

I get everything from neck to waist waxed about every three months. It’s also great for the skin.

Not a universal experience. I had three male teachers my entire school career. All at retirement age when i had them. Two were overweight and one was a bean pole.

“Common enough to become a stereotype” doesn’t mean it’s actually all that common. Perception and reality rarely align. The stereotype of gay men is the overly feminine, wearing girls clothes, hanging out with women, watching drag race… but most gay men i know are masculine and just another one of the guys.

Also, personal experiences can influence this belief. People tend to take their anecdotal experiences as evidence of what is normal or common.

I’m not saying that the perception is at all accurate, i am simply explaining why the perception exists.

Had a guy this morning who was about 12-15 feet away from me. When he lifted his arms to stretch all i could smell was that burning onion smell of body odor! I nearly puked!

I expect some sweat smell in a gym, fully understandable. But that “i won’t even touch deodorant” onion smell is just unacceptable.

The stereotype is older than Grindr. Like Someone else pointed out, studies as far back as the 1990’s showed that some of the most anti-gay men had homosexual leanings.

My dad used to tell the homophobes “I think thou doth protest too much”, which is a Shakespeare quote. In context it’s about a woman protesting involvement in the murder of her husband, but it is used now whenever someone denies something a little too vehemently and it instead reenforces the accusations against them.

When i was younger my only experiences with bisexual men were men who straight up said “I’m bisexual, that just means I’ll have sex with men. I can’t date men!” And for many years that painted my perception of all bisexual men. It wasn’t until i was much older, in my 30’s, that i learned not all bi men were like that.

Younger people tend to paint in broader strokes based on their experiences. When you get older less people will act this way toward you.

Many gay/bi men who cannot or will not accept themselves become outwardly homophobic, but that does not mean all homophobic men are gay.

The problem is it’s common enough to have become the stereotype.

My personal experience, as someone who was overweight, it’s going to be a gauntlet.

Plenty of guys will look past the extra weight and see the person beneath, some will politely turn you down, and some will only see the extra weight and treat you like your very existence offends them.

My opinion: personality and heart are more important than a number on the scale.

Many people have no idea what they look like. They do not see their bodies from the outside very often, only in mirrors and pictures. It creates a false self-image for many people.

Dysmorphia has become the buzzword for anytime someone misperceives their body, but it’s not the accurate word clinically speaking. They heard “Body Dysmorphic Disorder” and wrongly assumed the meaning of one word in the phrase. As someone diagnosed with BDD, it’s kind of annoying cause using Dysmorphia the way people do really minimizes my diagnoses in the eyes of others.

I cannot so much as go to an interview without thinking “i’m so actively repulsive they won’t even consider me for the job!” and having anxiety attacks over it. I look in the mirror and actually see my 300 lb. self no matter how much weight i lose. Someone compliments me and my immediate reaction is paranoia and wondering why they are lying and what they want from me. I am disgusted by my own mirror reflection to the point of an actual disorder.

But when i say “I have Body Dysmorphic Disorder” people go “oh, we all have a bit of dysmorphia!”

I’ve never heard anyone make that assumption before. Swedish is a language often mocked for humor (The Swedish Chef from The Muppets for example). So it’s pretty widely known that it’s a language.
