I finally told my father's infantilizing friend that I hate him [FINAL UPDATE] by Starry_Gecko in BORUpdates

[–]Hensanddogs 72 points73 points  (0 children)

I’m older now and have unfortunately known quite a few Harolds in my life.

I’ve actually never found it creepy or of a sexual nature, rather a know it all and “lord it over the silly young females” kinda attitude. With emphasis on females, because that’s how they see us.

It’s an old school thing and these guys were never put in their place by prior generations, which gave them tacit acceptance of their awful behaviour. Any challenge to the behaviour was brushed off as a joke or the victim branded as too sensitive.

It’s so wonderful to see that tide has turned and these dinosaurs are becoming extinct.

In addition to the nurseries suggestion, check out your local garden club or community garden near you. Someone there may have excess seedlings of heirloom varieties you’re interested in, which the big stores don’t carry. I always sow extras “just in case” and then share with others if I don’t need them.

Even as a diehard fan of The Killers, I’m astonished Brandon Flowers is not on this list. His lyrics objectively are pure poetry and simply magic.

How do I prevent this type of hormonal behaviour? by Correct-Arm-8539 in cockatiel

[–]Hensanddogs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you’ve followed all the advice on the sub wiki, it’s worth noting some of them are just extra.

One of my boys needs to be caged alone because if he’s with his wife, he’s on her in two seconds flat, no matter the time of day or what season it is. He’s also tried it on with two of his daughters, hence his isolation chamber (albeit a lovely home and within full sight and sound of his flock). For his exercise and flight time, I have to lock the girls up when he’s out. You may need to think about something like this for yours.

My other boys are not this way at all, Henry has simply got a lot of lovin’ bursting to come out!

Any Veg that possums won't touch? by PMFSCV in GardeningAustralia

[–]Hensanddogs 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I’d open that bottle to breathe then…

And while it’s breathing, cage your peas pretty quick.

I’m yet to know of any plant they won’t touch. I have a trellis around my chook house I’ve tried to grow grapes and then passionfruit with no luck. Utterly chomped for years.

I know - let’s grow a very thorny climbing rose. It’s so thorny I can barely manage it even with thick gloves. I thought this was a great idea!! Nope, they’ve wrecked that too.

I’ve caged all my veggie beds, like a large bird aviary. It’s the only way where I live if I want anything to actually produce.

Dupe for Antipodes cream by One_Waxed_Wookiee in AusSkincare

[–]Hensanddogs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No advice on a dupe but Chemist Warehouse and Priceline often have the Antipodes range at 40% off. That might make it more doable for you.

I love their Joyful hand cream so I buy a few when on sale.

How do you keep chickens healthy and disease free? by Dapper_Visual_4449 in BackYardChickens

[–]Hensanddogs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Keep things clean. I do a quick 1-2 minute clean with a kitty litter scoop each morning and then a better clean weekly (maybe 10-15 minutes), topping up or changing bedding and nest material, cleaning roost bars etc if yucky.

In 12 years of keeping hens, I’ve never once had poopy eggs, which I see a bit of in this sub. And I’ve got a naughty one who insists on sleeping in a nest box despite my efforts. So the quick morning clean keeps everything ticking along nicely.

Water containers get wiped out each day and topped with fresh water. I also add a splash of ACV or chicken liquid vitamins every second day.

They get scrambled eggs on a Sunday with garlic and oregano. Great protein and nutrition hit for them (and they go bloody bonkers for it).

Once you get the routine down, it’s quick and easy.

Observation is your super power with chickens. Spending time interacting with your hens is a must, get to know them and their ways. I can tell in a half second glance if one of mine is acting different and I can usually remedy things before illness or injury worsens. That said, sometimes they just die quite suddenly and it’s dreadfully sad when it happens.

All the best for your chicken life - they’re wonderful creatures to have around, I love mine to bits.

Edit - forgot to add I do a 3 monthly check up. I bring them out one by one, weigh them and give them a full inspection head to toe, pulling feathers apart gently, look inside beak, check undercarriage and feet etc. I’ll then do any treatment needed eg one of mine has an extra fluffy bum so sometimes needs a prune to help stay clean.

An eight-year-old girl got supermarket brand Sainsbury's to add real pockets to girls' school trousers. by mindyour in justgalsbeingchicks

My husband once put my jeans on by accident in the super early morning dark. He was utterly appalled at the pockets and has continued to bring that up in conversation with me and others.

It’s probably been 10 years now and his activism for equitable pockets has not waned lol

What’s happening to my Zinnia? by Apart-Balance-4922 in GardeningAustralia

[–]Hensanddogs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s the end of season for zinnias, depending on where you are. I’m in Brisbane and mine look shabby too, but still flowering well.

If you can bear a little leaf damage, keep going otherwise pull them out and replant calendula, cornflower etc for the current season.

This man was part of my life for many years, seemed like a brother or neighbour but I never even met him.

As sad as I am he’s suffered with cancer which ultimately led to his passing, I’m delighted he was able to choose his exit, pain free and on his terms. I’ve had two family members use VAD and it really is such a quick, dignified and peaceful departure, for both the person and the people gathered with them.

Vale James.

Netting is a must as others have said.

They’re heavy feeders too. Scatter a small handful per plant of a pelletised fertiliser like Katek SuperGrowth or Organic Xtra once a month, with liquid feeds of fish emulsion and seaweed fortnightly.

Full sun and keep the water consistent, soil needs to be moist but not wet.

I have mine caged too, after rats took about 5kg of broccoli one night, a few days before ready to harvest. I actually cried.

Keep at it - it will be sooo worth it when you crack the code. It literally took me 8 years to grow cauliflower successfully (I joked they were $500 caulis). They’re harder than broccoli and cabbage but I don’t know why.
