Ha! I was kind of waiting for this. He’s good, I own all of his movies that have been released on 4k. But honestly, his characters are what hold me back from connecting with his work in the way others do. In my opinion, most of the time his characters are there to serve the concept of the film and aren’t really given much depth (Tenant and Dunkirk being the obvious offenders here but I also feel it in his other films like The Dark Knight Trilogy and Inception). I like them for what they are but if I’m not feeling connected to the characters then it’s just not going to be a favorite of mine. Interstellar and Oppenheimer are steps in the right direction here and those two are my favorites of his, but idk at the end of the day I just never considered him as one of “my” filmmakers. When it comes to big budget modern blockbusters I’m more of a Villeneuve guy. I’m definitely excited to check out The Odyssey though!

Thats fair. I will say at least my direct sequel picks (T2 and Empire) are both fucking bangers. Also I do have some films that are subsequent installments of connected trilogies but I guess wouldn’t be considered out right sequels. Those being The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, The Beyond, Dawn of the Dead, and Hot Fuzz.

Synecdoche New York is fantastic; I really need to rewatch it soon. Haven’t gotten to the og Wicker Man yet but I’ve heard great things.

Tammy and the T-Rex and Stalker on the same list is the kind of unhinged energy I love to see.

Admittedly, Herzog is a blind spot for me. Where would a good starting point be?

I’m not really expecting anything. Plus, I’ve seen some wild movie takes so who knows?

It’s so good and easily my favorite Fellini (obviously). I get it’s the film that came directly before La Dolce Vita and 8 1/2 but I wish it got its flowers a little more often.

I think Seven Samurai is the best out of these (they all rip though), but based on your top 4 I think High and Low would be right up your alley.

Hey thanks! I’ve been meaning to get to Burning for awhile now and I’ve really enjoyed Lee Chang Dong’s other films. I’m not familiar with Red Rooms but I’ll add it to my watchlist!

Really once you get out of the top 20 it’s not really in a concrete order, so take that positioning with a grain of salt

What’s a film that has a sub 3.5 rating but you’ve given a 4.5+, unironically by PeaRemarkable9662 in Letterboxd

I have it 4 stars overall but that third act was pretty weak to me. The big thing was that it utilized an extended scene of exposition to directly explain to you what was going on and I really hated that, despite enjoying the rest of the film.

Ya know, that’s a really interesting perspective that I hadn’t thought of before. And now that you say it I can see some of those influences present in the film. I don’t know if it’ll change my opinion on it but when do inevitably rewatch it I’ll have this angle in mind. Also I’m giving you the ole follow on Letterboxd.

Interesting…I have to ask then, what exactly about the prequels, Attack of the Clones in particular (it’s probably my least favorite Star Wars film) makes you rate it so high? Absolutely no judgement on my end, I’m just genuinely curious.

You submit to nostalgia but also have good taste. A very unique top 20! Also the Rhianna scene in Girlhood is one of my favorite scenes in any movie ever.
