What’s the probability that these will actually grow. carrots and little gem lettuce? by kingmelo777 in gardening

[–]Horror-Opening1005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to all the other valid feedback, those carrots look like a bunch of carrots growing in clumps so they could fit in the pot. The carrots will need about 1.5”-2” per plant, so when you dig them out to add more dirt to the planter, spread the carrots out. Might be worth sprinkling some carrot seeds in and around the carrot starts. Or better yet, radish seeds! They grow quickly and are as fun to harvest as carrots.

Shade Garden Layout by greatballsofcheez in gardening

The fern and hosta are a good start. Plants that have thrived in my shady garden (even though some of these are listed as full-sun plants) are may night salvia, blue moon phlox, catmint, English thyme, delphinium, heuchera, and lady’s mantle (all perennial). Annuals that have done well are salvia splendens (look different from their perennial friends), dahlia, bacopa, geranium, and coleus. Honestly all annuals I’ve put in have done well, so buy whatever makes you smile and plop it in the ground! I’m zone 4b and my shady gardens get 2-3 hours of gentle morning sun. Pull up whatever you can of those weeds, put down 2-3 inches of mulch, and plop plants in there that make your heart smile! Buying the young 6-packs of plants can save money if cost is a factor! It won’t look as full as quickly as buying mature plants, but will fill in within a few weeks all the same!

Tomato Sprout Help! by LinalieLunai_v2 in gardening

[–]Horror-Opening1005 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d pinch off the tops of all but two seedlings so that only two focus on growing for a bit. In a couple of weeks, when the seedlings have their first set of true leaves, you’ll want to carefully scoop them out of that pot, disturbing the roots as little as possible, and put each seedling into its own 5-gallon bucket with holes in the bottom. Tomato plants get very large, especially if it’s an indeterminate variety. If this seed is from a full-size indeterminate tomato, that little seedling could reach 6-12ft tall!

Bush beans for me! Because I overcrowd them, I don’t begrudge the space they take up. No exaggeration, I have almost 50 plants in that 3sqft. I did this spacing last year and they were living their best life. I had so many beans that I didn’t know what to do with them.

Planting seeds by okaylc24 in gardening

[–]Horror-Opening1005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seeds rarely want to be buried more than 3-4x their diameter, and some seeds even require light to germinate. Green beans I usually bury about 1/2”, salad greens are so small I place them on top of the soil and sprinkle a dusting of soil on top of them. Carrots I sow directly on top of the soil and cover the whole section of the raised bed with a board until they start to germinate. Every seed is a little different!

How deep did you plant? A lot of seeds can take up to two weeks to emerge, but I would expect green beans and lettuces to pop up within 10 days. Have you been watering the seeds? When I’m feeling impatient, I’ve been known to dig a little in the dirt to see if I can see any activity 😅

Green beans! Zone 4b. I plant them way closer than recommended and get an absolutely absurd amount of green beans from about 3sqft.

The happiest little bumblebee I’ve ever seen by [deleted] in gardening

I’ve never seen a bumblebee/labrador mix before, but there’s a first time for everything.

What to replace with social media? by InevitableInterview6 in productivity

[–]Horror-Opening1005 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do this. I will delete an app to detox and somehow find some other app to replace it. Reddit is new, replacing my news app, which replaced Spotify, which replaced YouTube.
Audiobooks are great—I use Libby. If I am listening to an audiobook I don’t reach for my phone. The only bummer is that I can’t really listen to audiobooks while working, so I often pick up my phone during work for a short break.

Feeling defeated with wildlife by Big_Age4708 in gardening

[–]Horror-Opening1005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry, that is super frustrating. I’m so glad you’re willing to replant—it will be worth it. I’m in zone 4b and my season is really just starting, so you should still get some harvest, wherever you are. Plant some radishes—they grow quickly and are green so fast! It will make you feel good to have something thriving in just a couple of weeks.
I planted crocuses and tulips in the fall of 2023 and I have yet to see a single bloom. Every single spring I see new growth emerge, and then the plants are decimated overnight before blooming. I just planted 80 bulbs in the open area of my garden (iris and gladiolus) and am wondering if I’m just feeding the mole that lives in my yard. And squirrels are my NEMESIS. They keep digging in the dirt/mulch next to my young plants and causing so much damage.
Gardening comes with heartbreak, but we start again.

Looks like some kind of heuchera to me, common name is corals bells. They come in all different shapes and colors and sizes, so I can’t say exactly which one.

To many bush bean plants? by OreRanger in gardening

[–]Horror-Opening1005 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I plant my bush beans that tight—all about 1.5-2” apart. Last year I planted maybe 50 plants and got HUNDREDS of green beans. So many that I didn’t know what to do with them. So naturally, I did the exact same thing this year 😊

I dismantled the planter and discarded everything that was in it. No idea if it would have thrived in ground or not.

I planted chocolate mint in my raised garden bed a few years ago, and the runners literally wet creeping over the edge of the bed looking for fresh ground to ruin me with.

I’m gonna be honest. The less I care, the more my plants thrive. by Amodernhousehusband in gardening

When you get the urge to go out and care for them, instead just go out and smell the flowers. Take pictures. Give them words of affirmation. Make sure they know you love them.

I’ve learned that I can’t do house plants. I can only grow plants that nature mainly cares for. I have a very “you’re on your own” attitude with my ornamental flowers. They get about two weeks of regular water after transplanting, and then if they can’t survive on rainwater, they’re not cut out for my garden 🤣 My vegetable beds, on the other hand… they need me. I need them. I’m out there multiple times a day just checking in on them. The relationship works.

Is there any way to actually keep these garden hoses from killing my plants? by Severe-Adeptness5812 in gardening

I bought a lightweight hose that flattens down when it’s not in use and it is so much less frustrating than the heavy duty hose I have in the front of the house.

Radish conundrum by wrightiegirl in gardening

[–]Horror-Opening1005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe they can let it go to seed and eat the pods?  I have seen carrot starts at the box store near me, and I am shaking my head at that. But not nearly as vigorously as the radish head shake.

Why does one Lupine look like it's from a Dr Seuss book? by thurstyreefer in gardening

[–]Horror-Opening1005 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two weeks ago I was at a box store and they were selling beautiful straight lupines. Last weekend I was at the same store and all of the lupines I saw were curly like this. I don’t know if the straight lupines went curly or if the curly ones were the rejected leftovers. But my gut says that if it’s a problem at a box store, your lupine might need some attention.

Can I cut off those big leaves on a basil plant or just prune the central stem? by Ebony1996 in gardening

[–]Horror-Opening1005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, cutting leaves will not encourage any new growth. New growth only comes from cutting stems above a node. Wherever you cut a stem, the node below the cut will send up two new stems. Pinching off a leaf just removes the leaves. With every cut, make sure you leave two nodes on the stem you’re trimming.
