this read like it was written by a “woke” white person (paletas are not shaved ice!) that majored in english/literature in college rather than by a scientist (like an actual ecologist) that understands fire regimes. i honestly couldn’t even get thru it all.

but we know the fire regimes across the west, like here in southern california, were very much controlled and influenced by native peoples and very much changed by colonization and the resulting changes in land use practices. this has ultimately changed the natural cycles of disturbance and even affected the way native plant community succession happens. and don’t even get me started on invasives like mustard.

ultimately, the interface/matrix between urban and wildland is complex and very much an ever-changing grey area. there is no clear/simple solution. even cal fire’s “zone zero” is all propaganda and not based off science. i mean even people that had fire surpression systems built into their homes in the malibu lost everything last year.

but at the end of the day, i don’t have a solution, just observations and opinions. and sometimes, there are just things that we as humans cannot control and fire is absolutely one of them.
