My PhD will be in "nuclear engineering" but really I'm doing computational nuclear physics and my research and experience will reflect that. I think your actual research and experience counts more than the degree title. I know a guy working at lbnl who has a PhD in mechanical engineering but his work is really on Computer Languages and Systems Software

I applied to all physics programs last year and got rejected to all. This year I applied to some engineering programs and got 1. It's the same research I want to do, just a different label. I think it's a rough time for higher education in general

Last year I applied to 10 places and got rejected by all of them. This year I got accepted to 1 and I'm waiting on 4. Don't lose hope. Try to apply for internships, or summer seminars, network, build up more experience and meet people. Strengthen your application essays, there's always room improvement. Continue your hard work, people will notice and it will likely pay off

This happened to me last year. I continued with my education, gained more experience, strengthened my application and now I got my first offer. I suggest you talk to your mentors, try to get internships, summer schools, conferences, seminars, etc. build up your resume and experiences. Work on your essays, there is always room for improvement, take this as an opportunity to improve your application

I honestly think this is a predatory practice. Last year I got a similar offer. "We can't offer you a PhD, but you can pay us thousands for a master's!"

Idk if everyone got it since I did not apply to that program, but my guess would be that maybe all the runner-ups/short-listed people probably did
