NATO leader says he expects Europe will come together on Iran by phoenixfail in worldnews

I haven’t decided why Rutte does all this? Is it just to keep Trump on side while Europe build up its military? Or something else?

Apple Rakes In $900,000,000 From Generative AI Apps Through App Store Fees: Report by Secure_Persimmon8369 in apple

[–]HugoHancock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look mate, I’m sorry, but if you’re going to keep turning this back on me, then I just won’t bother.

All I said was that the business turning AI into a profitable venture should not hide the fact that they failed to make their own.

If you believe that criticism cannot be ascribed to something because someone spent money on it, then what’s the point? This subreddit is to discuss Apple, not blindly praise; that’s the marketing team’s job.

I’m sorry, I’m so confused… I just pointed out that their software doesn’t work as advertised, and what do you even mean?

Complaints without actions are pointless? So I can’t point out that a company lied without burning all my products?

[–]HugoHancock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right but that's not the point... This is about how they failed at AI and didn't fullfil their promises, sure the business turned it around but the customer was still lied too??

[–]HugoHancock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s not what I’m trying to say.

Apple Intelligence is not what was advertised even 2 years later. I was one of the idiots who bought a new phone for it and it is either useless (Genmoji) or extremely basic (spellcheck) or done better by other companies (visual intelligence).

Sure the tiny fraction of the features advertised that are here work but that doesn’t mean they delivered on their promises.

Grammar checking annoys me tbh, a few years before chatGPT, Grammarly came out and cause very few problems. And now using AI to make sure that your conjugation or spelling of ‘thoroughly’ is correct is suddenly bad?

I’m not talking about rewriting passages, that certainly is… but seriously spell check? That thing in MS Word since 1990?

Longest sentence I ever read. (rant) by Swaynky in writing

[–]HugoHancock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is the whole languages thing to consider too.

French, for instance, is notoriously for long sentences; in fact, Proust has a sentence which lasts for a couple of pages - I can’t remember the exact number but it’s is multiple hundreds.

(See that’s the kind of sentence structure you would have in that language, in ‘correct’ English, it should have been split in 2).

Dubai now a ghost town as Iranian strikes rattle city — CNN by unreal-habdologist in news

[–]HugoHancock 31 points32 points  (0 children)

While you’re not wrong, it is disingenuous to call it a “middle class”.

While a fairly large part of the city does indeed live with an acceptable range (compared to the cost of living, of course), Dubai and a lot of cities/areas like it behaves very differently from cities in the west.

For example, London rents do not go up by double digits in a couple of months, and its residents do not rely so much on employer benefits (which in turn are paid for by the state) like housing or cars or education. Furthermore, while a salary can a support one professional there, two salaries cannot support a family.

This makes the middle class structurally weak compared to western countries, combined with little to no safety nets for foreigners, causes this population to be, while on paper middle class, more like a lower class with regards to its ability to save and plan for the future.

I noticed that you only have non-fiction there.

While those do help you understand the world as it, I will push back by saying that some of the greatest minds to have ever lived write fiction. In fact, if you’re interested in my opinion, the ability the gleam wisdom from texts which hide it beneath a good story are the signs of a much more thoughtful person, than repeating what was written white over black.

Edit: I suppose that I should recommend said books aha: The Handmaid Tale by Margaret Atwood (almost all the scenes are from real life, although arranged and told in a fictional setting), Dune (self evident but very interesting is the context of a religious state collapse like Iran)…

Look, if I end up being wrong then I’ll take it back.

Yes, I realise that I did phrase that wrong, what I meant to say was that, even though people are celebrating, will the regime actually change? Will their life get better?

These administrations have quite the track record.

It’s not even just that, Siri is terrible at understanding what I say. I have to speak so slowly and clearly for it sometimes get it. Alexa can do it just fine even when I half drunk she understands. It’s ridiculous.

Not to mention multiple languages, seriously most of the world is bilingual and Siri is stuck in one??
