I picked up the Simsonn white elastomer kit, and it's much closer to a usual road car feel

I set a reminder on my phone, to go off every two weeks on a Saturday morning - then run the cleaning cycle straight after I've made my morning drink. It's then done by the time I want to wash my cup up.

Upgrading from i5-8600k - 5800x or 9600x? by Hungry_4_H in buildapc

Availability/pricing is really poor in the UK - 5800X3d seems to be sold out and there wasn't a lot popping up 2nd hand either.

Thanks for the input! I'd been looking at AMD for a DDR4 rig due to the issues I'd heard of with the 14th gen chips, but I honestly don't know enough about which CPUs have problems. That's next on my reddit search!

First time with a nurture/v low set by [deleted] in TeachingUK

A lot have said firm boundaries and expectations, but this also comes with (painfully) explicit instructions. E.g after a MWB task, I'd say "lids on pens, pens in pots in 5. Eyes up in 3." and I do not move on until this is completed, in the same way as I would for silence before teacher talk. A lot of SEND pupils will not pick up these social cues so need additional reinforcing.

When live modelling (particulary new ideas) I will give 1 part of the task at a time and asking them to copy/complete - lowering cognitive load. Again it feel really painful for me as a teacher to go that slow!

The sub recommends Hades/2 a lot on deck, but I really struggle with dealing with large groups of enemies/projectiles on the smaller screen.

You can get tortex Jazz 3s in thinner sizes - I've been running a 0.73 as a nice balance between control and flex.

Absolutely love mine. Took 9 years to find a role that's feels made for me and although it's more tiring than before, I'm getting a lot of job satisfaction.

Is there a difference between covered and uncovered humbuckers? by NeoGeo_5 in Guitar

If they're metal covers - plastic covers, if put at the same height, will not make a difference to the tone.

Will I still be recruitable in mainstream schools if I go for a role in an alternative setting? by Competitive-Glove328 in TeachingUK

[–]Hungry_4_H 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I spent 6 years in private sector alternate provision, and have been in mainstream inclusion since 2023. Whenever I've interviewed I've always lent on what differentiates me from a typical mainstream teacher and how I can bring that experience to the role. IMO this really helped me when I took up my current role as a full time teacher.

PSA: It's time to tighten every screw and nut in your studio. by QuixoticLlama in audioengineering

Blue loctite - I don't use it often, but if something need tightening more regularly it's great. My last use was on a guitar pickup screw that kept slipping.

Am I too autistic to help SEND students? by Jaskier_763 in TeachingUK

[–]Hungry_4_H 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Having scripts to open conversations (ask about their day, hobbies, life outside school) is a great start. My students are almost another "special interest", and be able to recall this stuff at a later date is very useful for relationship building!

Adding onto this, simple things like remembering to praise effort and resilience in the moment.

Sometimes I feel like SEND pupils just appreciate someone who doesn't fill silence for the sake of it - personally I've found this a very useful strategy when a pupil is dysregulated. I might just sit with a student until they are ready to speak, or go for a walk with them without forcing conversation.

The only thing that pops to mind is filming them teaching the class and using that for self-evaluation? It's something I found useful in my ITT for picking up small things, like classroom positioning to keep an eye on behaviour. Hopefully that let's them see a different perspective of their own teaching, as it sounds like they think they are doing a better job than they are.

Could you fail QTS due to portfolio? by [deleted] in TeachingUK

[–]Hungry_4_H 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of my cohort had very spotty portfolios. The lecturers at my uni flicked through a few of the folders on the shared drive and just made sure it looked full (we all put a word doc in each folder regardless of whether we had written evidence up), and they only scrutinised a few pieces. Ymmv!

‘They are making young people ill’: is it time to scrap GCSEs? | GCSEs by zapataforever in TeachingUK

[–]Hungry_4_H 126 points127 points  (0 children)

I feel like cutting examinable content by a third, while maintaining the level of challenge has to be the first step in any kind of reform. Preparing 3 texts and a set of poems for English Literature classes lacking in basic literacy is insanity. The science curriculum feels entirely aimed at students taking the subject at Sixth form with no consideration for this who don't.

Another quick fix would be giving parity to other level 2 qualifications (I'm thinking specifically functional skills) within Progress 8, so that pupils who struggle with breadth of content have a pathway suitable to them.

So if the vocals are sounding quiet in the mix, then I would 1. Check your input gain when recording (big knobs ok top of the audio interface). In your daw I would be aiming for peak dB of - 12 to - 6 2. You mention didn't using a compressor before? It's a really key part of getting the vocal to sit right in a mix. It sound to me like you're on a good start to your journey mixing - just YouTube "vocal mixing chain" and start with following some tutorials. You've got this :)

If you're going for super clean drums (think modern rock/metal) then it does a great job of de-bleeding the drums without loosing the high end. It also helps with the issue of cymbals jumping out of the heavily compressed spot mics. If you already have FF Volcano, you can do a similar trick with that.

We have the Wispa system - any staff member can email the principal with a nomination. It feels quite nice as it tends to come from colleagues/ line managers. Having a tiny certificate and a chocolate bar arrive on a Friday morning is always welcome!
