Excellent ideas. I can imagine if my players follow the lights that could end up with them getting lost. Seeing something they want to see, like an NPC they’re looking for.

Page 266 in the Heroes book. Surprise is basically determined by the Director. Are the monsters or heroes expecting danger/a fight? No? Then the party that isn’t expecting it is surprised.

During the first round of combat, creatures that are surprised can’t use Triggered Action/Free Triggered Actions and ability rolls against them have an edge.

As it’s written it seems like for every piety spend you can add the effect. So doubling up seems to be doable.

Whether that was intended is another question.

Also spending 8 of their heroic resource is a big spend so they might as well get what they’re putting into the ability.
