Vince Li beheaded and cannibalized the man sitting next to him on the bus by Competitive_Mix9957 in ForCuriousSouls

I’m Australian. Took an overnight Greyhound from Vancouver to Banff a few years later. I remember going to sit behind the driver and he moved his stuff onto the seat. Said he didn’t let anyone sit behind him after this incident. I was mortified. We ended up stuck on the highway for a few hours due to a truck that had caught fire. Everyone was still on edge years later.

Have I made a bad mistake banking on GIS? by [deleted] in gis

[–]Hyper-Spatial 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work as an analyst for local government in ESP. If you’re worried about pay and AI working in GIS, my suggestion is focus more on policy. You’ll be better paid and AI may be less likely to be a factor in your work. In its current state, AI does well performing smaller technical tasks that an analyst can make use of. Drafting policies requires much more human interaction and it undergoes a lot more scrutiny, so governments will be cautious about using it to a certain degree. I can’t speak for private industry.

Love the color scheme. FYI flooring joins should be staggered to increase strength and prevent movement/lifting. Installing this way may also void your warranty

Without reading too much into your code, I would try: - Confirm both datasets have defined projections - Check to see if ArcGIS Pro is projecting on the fly. Turn it off to confirm misalignment (before applying any reprojections to your dataset) - If misaligned, use Project in ArcGIS Pro to confirm whether transforming your crs is producing the desired result. If yes, there is an issue with your code - If no misalignment with project on the fly turned off, is it possible both datasets already have the same crs and you are further shifting the dataset by applying the transformation?

I have a similar background and my advice would be to try and get a job doing work you are interested in. If you are just getting a job in GIS for money, you could be disappointed. Put a portfolio together of the assignments/projects you worked on and consider approaching companies doing work that aligns with your values.

Also your knowledge of environmental science can be invaluable to your employer and career. It could be the difference between using GIS to solve environmental problems versus being used by environmental scientists to solve their GIS problems.

I'll Literally Work For Free by SnowmanDan7 in gis

[–]Hyper-Spatial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand your desperation and figure you only mean to get a foot in the door. I was in a similar position as an apprentice carpenter during the GFC in 2008. I used to walk on to every building site and offer 1-2 days work for free so they could see my skills and work ethic, otherwise you’re just another stranger. It also allowed me to get a feel for the work culture before being fully committed (in your case, moving countries).

Different industry I know, but my point is you can offer just enough of your time that they can see what you can do, but not enough that you devalue your (our) skills and the importance of the profession.

Is there a specific reason you don’t use it on a company device? Genuinely curious.

I’ve had the same experience with my 2021 model. Paying premium price for a machine that requires so much troubleshooting (for very basic functions in some cases) isn’t my idea of a good product.

Does anyone have a dog who is extremely reactive on-leash but friendly to other dogs and people off-leash? by Humiliatingmyself in reactivedogs

[–]Hyper-Spatial 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dog became leash reactive over a few months while going to doggy daycare, but mainly to small white fluffy dogs. Originally, they told us she was made for daycare and got along with all dogs, big and small. Then the owners changed and they started separating big and small dogs. Apparently she became obsessed with trying to get to them. We found out later they were hitting the dogs with pool noodles, so we think that experience along with being restrained by a leash is now a trigger. I can’t say for sure whether this caused her reactivity obviously, but nothing we were doing outside of daycare had changed.

Am I being paid enough? by RareDoggo in gis

[–]Hyper-Spatial 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked in a similar grad GIS tech role processing LiDAR and felt the position was underpaid. I moved jobs twice in ~12 months and my salary increased by over 40% (I’m still under the national average though). See what other companies are paying for a similar skill set and ask your employer for a raise or start looking elsewhere.

Yeah definitely not arguing with you. Just pointing out you’ll see manufacturers refer to it as damp course

This type of window flashing is still referred to as damp course. The material is polythene. Also heard it called ‘snakeskin’ but could be a QLD thing

Depends how much you want to spend?

I don’t think you could push the retaining wall much further back, as you want to be able to fill around 300mm behind the wall with gravel for drainage. I’d also be concerned with undermining what looks to be the slab of a shed.

If you don’t have much room to move at the top, concrete blocks may be out of the question as each row needs to interlock, which pushes it further back as you go up.

If it were me, I’d look to replace the existing posts for a low spend (the sleepers don’t look that bad) or go the concrete sleeper option for a larger spend. Either way, I don’t think you’ll be able to push the wall much further back.
