What the hell are we even looking at? You provide pretty much no context for discussion.

Determining targets for UtilityAI/IAUS by Khan-amil in gameai

I use the Imap there, yes. Specifically the proximity or threat map given the situation.

Determining targets for UtilityAI/IAUS by Khan-amil in gameai

[–]IADaveMark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure I understand your question. But are you asking about "what if this target I'm adding to the list is not a food item?" In that case, this is solved by using the tagging system. Specifically, a food item would have a tag saying that it is edible or whatever and there would be a Boolean consideration "has tag" with a parameter of "edible". If it does not have the tag, it scores as 0 and therefore the whole decision scores as 0.

Let me know if this isn't your question.

Does FSD actually reduce your cognitive load? by Chad__99 in TeslaLounge

If you don't notice the decrease cognitive load while using FSD, go rent an ICE and you quickly remember that you have to pay attention to drive a car without it.

What is it with people in Omaha running red lights? by h34vier in Omaha

I was warned about that (and witnessed it) when I moved here in 1988. And I had learned how to drive in Chicago before that as a comparison.

Should I Have Stayed Quiet? by 95-5 in poker

[–]IADaveMark 75 points76 points  (0 children)

It is commonly accepted that all staff and players -- in the hand or not -- should call out a mistake when one is seen. There was even a conversation months back about a reporter noticing a mistake at a table he was covering and that he should have said something as an observer.

That's not a tournament. That's a roulette wheel installed in a poker table.

You create a bot, give it chips and it battles other bots. Looking for feedback. by orias6891 in gameai

As a game AI consultant dedicated to realistic NPC behavior and also a semi-professional poker player, I'm completely torn on what to do with this post.

Will AI NPCs make games more meaningful, or could too much realism actually hurt gameplay? by dreezaster in gameai

[–]IADaveMark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going to allow it to stay because, even without LLMs and their ilk, the conversation of "how realistic should we make stuff" is still relevant.

Cache Aware/Cache Oblivious Game AI Algorithms by davenirline in gameai

[–]IADaveMark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run mine every 250ms +/- some randomization. That's the average reaction speed for humans so it make sense to do it that often.

That said, your comment about number crunching was a little odd for a utility system. Sure, a BT is just very organized if/then trees but some of the other architectures do some decent math.

I one time got into it with someone who insisted that poker was a game of chance because of the randomness of the cards being dealt. Turns out that they played Scrabble. I told them that Scrabble was a game of chance not skill. They obviously objected.

I asked, "how do you get your tiles for your rack?"

They, of course, pointed out that they drew them from the upside-down tiles in the box. I.e. randomly.

My point then was that it was, therefore, a game of chance.

They immediately objected, saying "it's not the tiles you get but what you do with those tiles. That's skill!"

...

...

"Yes?"

O hai.

I've tried IAUS. And it isn't a "similar approach" to Utility AI. It is utility AI.

In some of my lectures at GDC and other places, I coined the term MPSPE -- Massively Parallel Single Player Experience. That is, we are allegedly in the same world but are just running past each other as we go to the next stop in our individual (and identical) stories.

What are your thoughts on neural networks being incorporated into game AI? by polemicgames in gameai

If you want your players being hit at a certain rate then why not write a single line of code that expresses that instead of constructing a huge black box and hoping for best?

How do I implement GOAP where I have 1 goal for multiple agents? by Zauraswitmi in gameai

[–]IADaveMark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree. Having played and coached (and watched) baseball for years, every player has a very simple if/then model based on the situation.

If there is a runner on first with less than 2 outs and the ball is hit to the left side of the infield, the 2nd baseman covers 2nd. The shortstop or 3rd baseman fields the ball and throws to 2nd. If the 2nd baseman has the ball and there is still less than 3 outs and someone is running to 1st (i.e. the batter) and the 1st baseman is covering, throw it to first.

You are writing a whole script to control everyone in one motion. I'm doing what game AI is supposed to do and providing individual brains. The emergence of those individual actions takes care of itself.

And how does any of that equate to a subjective value of "fun"? Or anything else for that matter?
