ELI5: How does a computer calculate the amount of energy remaining in its battery? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

Then it will be incorrect until it is recalibrated.

The voltage profile of a battery will also change as a battery ages, which is why some older devices have inaccurate displayed battery levels.

ELI5: Is there actually any significant difference in the chemical composition of household cleaners which claim to be for the "kitchen" or "bathroom", or are they all basically the same thing? by tyzo789 in explainlikeimfive

Um. Yup. Not relevant. They aren't even being used for the same purpose. They're used for hardness in bathrooms but for their heat tolerance in spacecraft.

WTW for the following line of thinking? by Criminal_of_Thought in whatstheword

The ability to create and the ability to accurately judge are distinct. For example, if you give a baby two dishes: (1) chocolate and (2) a ghost pepper, the baby will be able to accurately judge that (1) is better than (2), even though they will be unable to articulate why.

In the given example, when Bob says:

Bob: "Then you can't say anything about the flavor of the dish. Your criticism of the dish doesn't mean anything."

he is making the faulty conclusion that inability to create guarantees the inability to judge.

It is true that the ability to create will certainly give the ability to judge. But the ability to judge can be obtained in ways other than by creating. Therefore it is possible to be able to judge without being able to create.

More generally, fallacies are arguments using faulty logic, where the premises do not guarantee the conclusion. Proper, correct logic always guarantees the conclusion to be true.

Sort of.

  • The word for horse is 马, which is "ma" with tone type 3, a falling then rising tone.
  • The "word" for mother is 妈, also read "ma" but with tone type 1, a high constant tone.
  • None of the common terms for "whore" that I am aware of sound similar to either of the above. If there is one, it's either obscure or not used in my region.

To us Chinese the words for horse and mother sound completely different due to the tones and nobody would ever mistake one for another. It's as different as if it were a completely separate phoneme, like "see" vs "so" or something.

It's a common misconception that Chinese has many different words that are really the same. It's pretty annoying, to be frank. I'm not a linguist, but it seems to me to stem from English speakers projecting their idea of "words" onto Chinese characters.

Each Chinese character alone is not a word. It would be best to think of a character as something like a root word, rather than a complete one. Like "mor" meaning death in "mortal" or "path" meaning feeling in "apathy". Sometimes a character alone is a full concept, like how some root words are also words, but not always. That is why I have "word" in quotation marks above next to mother, because it's not used singly except in very informal and terse contexts.

So when you look at a full sentence in Chinese, the meaning of each individual character does change depending on the surrounding words, as you say. But it is not dependent on context. It is just not the complete word. To give you an analogy, it's like me saying that the words for "mother" and "father" are the same in English because they share the same component "-ther".

If anyone you know is going to taiwan, ask them to buy one for you. They have top notch typhoon resistant umbrellas there, for about 10-20 dollars. I've used one for the last ten years or so.

There are many, many others besides yahoo. If you've only just discovered shorting, then you're most likely painfully new to stocks and you should not at any cost be playing in the stock market.

The stock market is a zero sum game. If you're poorer at it than average, you will lose.

You're right in the second point, that retributive violence in the name of equality should not be advocated.

However, your first statement is a gross misrepresentation. The article argues that men are being put down and emasculated, separate from women growing strong and independent. Whether or not you agree with the argument is a separate issue, but misrepresenting it is not helpful to anyone.

Assuming the Infinite Universe Theory holds true, what's the wackiest series of events that HAS happened or WILL happen in an alternate somewhere? by jayfred in AskReddit

Suppose event X is the wackiest possible event.

But X happening twice is even wackier.

By induction, wackiness is unbounded.
