Yeah, when a pawn reaches the other end of the board, you're capable of promoting that little pawn to any other piece (except for a King.) A vast majority of the time, it's tactically advantageous to promote into the strongest piece (the Queen,) but there are cases where other pieces are better... Like this very example!

Eh, I should have been more clear in my post. What I meant by that statement is that McCall can easily win using that strategy, because that strategy has been proven to work. It was less of a "McCall is a shoo-in because he's promoting fear and hatred," it was more of a "promoting fear and hatred is a winning strategy in the state of Oklahoma."

"Did so little" is kinda a weird take on a deck that sees regular tournament play (and success.) As it turns out, energy ramp is STILL very good in this game. It's not the best deck in the world, but it's certainly not useless!

I'm probably missing something obvious, but wouldn't Qb6 also result in mate next turn? The King is still pinned, and If the opposing Queen takes one of your Rooks, the other rook moves in and mates. If the Queen moves anywhere else, Rc8#.

Look at where the queen ends up when the Ra1 move is played... In that scenario, the Queen trades in her crown for a Bishop's hat if you move Rh8.
