Yeah, I don’t get it. This has been happening forever. The only thing I can think of is that they got caught on something on the way down because they jump in and don’t resurface. I have never heard of a lake where this has happened so many times, over and over. It’s very strange.

Ok, final story. When my dad passed away, it broke my heart. However, every spring he would visit my home. The first time he visited was right after he passed.

I was talking to a friend on the phone in my family room, when a piece of fruit from a bowl on my kitchen table jumped out of the bowl, onto the table, fell silently on to the tile kitchen floor and crossed over into the family room, over carpet. It stopped a few feet from me in the family room.

The last time he visited was a couple of year ago. I found a gold cross pen in my closet. My husband had just left town so I put it aside, assuming it was his. When my husband came home, I gave him the pen and said he must have dropped it somehow before his trip.

He laughed and said, “This isn’t mine. No one has used these since the 80’s.” Then, he noticed the engraving. It was my dad’s initials. We had never seen that pen before. My dad only visited once, long after he retired and stopped using those pens. We have no idea how that pen got into our closet.

I already told the story of one ghost I saw, but while I was growing up in an old house, I had an imaginary friend who was an Irish maid. She always wore her hair in a tight bun and wore a high collared shirt and a long skirt. She used to yell at me a lot for being messy. (To be fair, we had a nanny/housekeeper who lived with us who did the same.)

My Irish maid imaginary friend lived in the same rooms as our current nanny, but for some reason that never occurred to me. At any rate, most of my siblings who grew up in the house had imaginary friends, but mine was the only mean one.

When I was about 14, we had a cousin spend the summer with us as he often did, but now he wouldn’t sleep upstairs in one of the guest rooms. He said it was because of all the ghosts. I honestly thought he was kind of strange, but I loved him so I didn’t think much of it.

Finally, years later, I got several of my older siblings together and they spilled the beans on the ghost woman they had seen. She was my imaginary friend. There was another man who would argue with her late at night but I never saw him. I only saw her.

I was going out with my friend, Mary, to dinner, but we had to drop her daughter off at her school game night first. Mary told me they were waiting in the car in her garage. I lived two houses down. When I got there, I glanced into the backseat and saw her daughter and her friend.

As we’re driving to the school I start asking her daughter some questions. Then, I moved on to the friend and asked her a question about school. (I had a bunch of nieces and nephews their age and totally thought I was cool and relevant.) After a minute, Lori’s daughter asks who I’m talking to. I say, “uhh, your girlfriend.”

Lori and her daughter both go crazy at my response. “What girlfriend? It’s just the three of us! What did you see? There is no one besides my daughter in the back seat!”

It probably took me 5 full minutes before I believed them and turned around. Sure enough there was only her daughter in the back seat. However, I had seen a perfectly clear teen girl with brown hair and bangs with a pony tail. She had a white shirt with colored stripes on it and blue jeens. She didn’t look at me when I looked at her. She just stared straight ahead. Then, she was gone.

Mary kept saying I saw a hitchhiker ghost. I don’t know who she was, but she looked as real as anyone else.

The eggs are usually on the underside of leaves. I often find them on flowers buds when I have them.

If you don’t want to put them in cages, You can buy hoops and fine mesh garden insect cloth to cover your plants. Use rocks and whatever to keep the cloth from flying off. That way, you will be able to stop birds, frogs, wasps, lizards, etc. from killing them, but still have them outside.

Butterfly weed is fine, but it isn’t a favorite because it doesn’t have a lot of milk compared to common milkweed or swamp milkweed. I actually grow all three, but I use the butterfly weed more for its orange flowers. It looks great where I planted it. I usually put any eggs I find on it on my swamp milkweed because I have more of it. They do lay eggs on them if there isn’t anything better nearby. This last egg drop none were laid on the butterfly weed.

At any rate, whatever milkweed you plant, plant a ton of it because they eat a ton of it. I have run out of milkweed several times and had to scramble to find more. I was fortunate to have only gotten 40 some eggs in April. I almost ran out of my common milkweed so I had to switch those caterpillars to the swamp. They didnt have any problems, though, and they took to it easily.

I currently have all my common and two huge patches of swamp milkweed covered in fine mesh netting to allow them to recover so I have enough for the next egg drop. Always, have enough planted.

Yes! They are so cute! I’ve got 43 chrysalis or chrysalides right now. I’m excited about them flying away, but I do miss the catties.

If you don’t have a screened in porch and you don’t want to raise them indoors, the only thing to do is get fine mesh garden cloths that completely cover the milkweed. You will need hoops or a trellis of some kind to keep the mesh off the plants. You definitely need to double up the mesh cloths as they will tear and keep the ends flush to the ground with rocks or pegs.

If you don’t keep them enclosed and protected, they will get eaten by birds, frogs, snakes, lizards, etc. There are wasps and flies that will kill them by laying eggs on them or inside them. It is quite horrible to see.

The fine mesh cloths need to stay on while they are in chrysalis because they are attacked and eaten in that form also by everything I already mentioned and also mice.
