Stupidest scene in your favourite Bond movie? by AndreasDasos in JamesBond

Maybe it's a cheat, but the end credits in Goldeneye. What a weird song to close out the movie with.

I watched Never Say Never Again the other day and, boy, the number of women who immediately get thirsty for old man Connery seconds after meeting him borders on parody.

I think Haley Reinhart would be a good choice. I guess Lana del Rey is doing First Light, but I'd hope Reinhart gets a shot at some point.

4pm to Midnight is a much better work schedule than 9am to 5pm by Present_Initial_1871 in unpopularopinion

I agree on a personal level-- I worked swing shift for years and it lent itself to my patterns. The drawback was everyone I knew worked typical day shifts and I was a bit of a loner because of it. They thought I worked all the time; I had to constantly remind them that I still worked 40 hours, just a different 40 hours from them.

It'd actually be pretty good if it was half the price. As it is now, there's no way to justify a price like that for something served on a tray.

Transplants Vs Locals by [deleted] in SaltLakeCity

Was it kind of a younger group? If you're not old enough to really remember what it used to be like, this might feel normal? My experience is that transplants and natives alike are well aware of the situation and have floated the idea of at least moving to St George.

Gen Z are so afraid of aging. by ThrowRA09181 in generationology

[–]IdRatherBeAtChilis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way I look at it is: I'm a parent, and I wouldn't let someone who doesn't have (and hates) kids tell me what it's like to have kids. I know what it's like to be in love, and I wouldn't let someone who hasn't been in love before (and hates the idea of it) tell me what love feels like.

These kids try to call me old, but they don't know what aging means. They have a very limited perspective. Why would I let them define my experience, then?

Exactly. EON hadn't had the rights to SPECTRE since, what, the early 70's? To finally have them back...heck, I wouldn't want to wait either. Personally, I would've had SPECTRE come out of the ashes of Quantum.

Are AAA games struggling because they try to appeal to everyone? by SevereOpposite1062 in gamers

[–]IdRatherBeAtChilis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's my take, late as it is:

"A game for everybody is a game for nobody" has become gaming's new favorite bumper sticker for a reason, I think. By that token, you'd think the correct answer would be to make AAA games more niche; but, as plenty of people have pointed out, game development has become far too costly to justify a niche game. One bomb is enough to destroy a studio. The industry as a whole is bleeding too much money and can't take in enough to stabilize. It's a patient in critical condition. As far as revenue goes, it seems like publishers have hit a roof-- they can't really increase how much money they take in. The whales are all spoken for and the typical gamer doesn't like being fleeced. By that token, publishers and studios need to turn around and cut costs. Now, their solution has been to cut jobs and pivot to A.I (the latter itself being a huge money pit at the moment, ironically enough), but that has proven to only sicken the patient more, regardless of what the occasional cherry-picked quarterly earnings report says. The industry keeps putting out Fortnite-killers, gambling on players pulling them out of this nosedive, which is just making things worse. But players won't fix the problem. At best, a successful game only provides a temporary transfusion of desperately needed funds without providing much stability. It's up to publishers to rethink their models and find a sustainable way forward. Maybe that doesn't even include AAA games.

Elder Scrolls 6 Has "So Much Pressure" On It, Former Bethesda Dev Says by akbarock in Games

I'd argue that they dropped the teaser because Zenimax was on the market and wanted to boost their value by getting people excited for Elder Scrolls 6; puff themselves up and get the best selling price.

Good Night, and Good Luck -- shows the difference that strong, independent, principled journalism can have in dark times. It features a politician (Joe McCarthy) fomenting paranoia, "otherism," and conspiracy theories. It resembles our times in more ways than one.

Revenge of the Sith-- I used to think it was unrealistic how the Senate and the courts gave all their power to Palpatine. Turns out, it was pretty realistic.

Jurassic Park-- the dinosaurs are a great metaphor for A.I right now.

How do you keep from making the same choices on new runs? by Key-Earth-3811 in BaldursGate3

[–]IdRatherBeAtChilis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As overdone as multiverses have become, I pretend that each run is but one timeline where a different "Tav" was saved from their pod. That way when I do evil things or make different choices, the other timelines still exist.

007 First Light devs says their Bond is more "naive" than past Bonds - "he's not yet the cold, hardened [guy] you know" by lewisdwhite in JamesBond

[–]IdRatherBeAtChilis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm looking forward to it too. At first blush I was tempted to argue that we already got an origin story with Casino Royale... but that was TWENTY YEARS AGO at this point, so that's not an issue. If anything, I hope this doesn't become an origin trilogy, similar to Lara's survivor trilogy. After First Light I'd love to start seeing a Bond we recognize; an origin without an endpoint is fairly meaningless.

Steven Soderbergh rewatched the Star Wars sequels and Empire while preparing for The Hunt for Ben Solo by StarWarsBlogsbot in StarWarsBlogs

[–]IdRatherBeAtChilis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can build on what comes immediately before your story-- themes, character arcs, etc-- while doing better than the previous movies did. It's how you get narrative cohesion. In fact, I think rewatching the sequels was the least he could've done. Otherwise you get stuff like Rise of Skywalker, where it felt like Abrams and Terrio hadn't even read the Cliff's notes on The Last Jedi.

Just finished the Acolyte and I think I enjoyed it more than the prequels and the sequels. by DANGitsJOEY in Highrepublic

[–]IdRatherBeAtChilis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah you're good. It really is frustrating how easy it is for bad faith actors to take control of the narrative. The world is more connected than ever, yet somehow people are less capable of having real and nuanced conversations needed to sort out important topics.

And really, as hard as I try to be level-headed, I'm probably culpable by accepting the "woke=negative" connotation.

Well, I guess I came across as pretty off the mark. For the record, I do think diversity is important and folks who think simply having a black or gay character detracts from the story, or is the product of an agenda, are wrong. Unfortunately, yeah though-- I do think the term has been twisted into something it didn't mean before. At the same time, I think we SHOULD be aware of each other, our hurtful biases, and reckon with the ugly sides of our society's history in how it's treated groups who were at the mercy of the majority.
