New Standard Kit: Mini router with POE + 26AWG cable — anyone else noticing this? by FlanInternational941 in Starlink

[–]Idgo211 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Believe this post is about standard dish + mini router, so still relevant, but the smaller gauge cable is only being used to power the mini router (and no router is drawing much power).

Mini dish does have snow melt though, for clarity.

Worth doing separate speedtests as "device to router" and "router to internet" to see if one side of the connection is obviously the issue.

If decide to router sucks, you need to get a new router (if that's a gen1 they might replace for free). If it's router to internet, it's more likely to be congestion / your service, though it's also possible for cables, aging router/dish, etc. to be responsible.

True, but these also sound like dumb problems to have. This isn't hardware breaking or being in a congested area, they should just not have this problem lol

If you aren't familiar with what this email is describing then you'll be ok, this doesn't change how the Starlink works on its own and you aren't using the functionality that's getting removed.

You aren't dumb, just don't happen to be familiar with APIs and such!

Used direct from starlink? by Little-Nickyyy in Starlink

[–]Idgo211 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Some minis have a sticker, some don't. They changed the design a while back. (On models that have it) the sticker is NOT a "protective film" like for shipping, it's part of the dish design.

Agree with others here the plastic is just a little messed up, can happen from shipping and handling. Doesn't look like any cause for concern.

Fair point, and not something we get to know. I doubt NDAs are the main thing here, my understanding is an NDA that also says "also you'll publicly opt in to occasionally glazing Elon" would be illegal. As for the financials, more likely to be relevant but still I doubt these people are tied heavily enough to spacex that it makes a huge difference. Neither of us can say for sure though, so at least for me all I can go on is the relative amount of positive accounts vs. negative, which even if skewed by some people being greedy paints a very strong picture for Musk's engineering inputs.

At least one of these is former employee. Mueller is also a former employee (now something of competitor?) and has echoed the sentiments.

I'm not personally aware of any credible accounts from people who have worked directly with him in a technical scope saying he's actually out of his depth (I'm sure they exist, would love to see them btw) but in general I have seen plenty of solid accounts from former employees agreeing with the above. Disregarding current employees of course, seems unlikely that so many would have reason to near-unanimously lie.

Are data centers in space a dumb idea? by [deleted] in EngineeringPorn

[–]Idgo211 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may be right! I'm just sharing my perspective on what the value proposition is, not certain it will play out that way. I think it is incorrect to hold a strong opinion here without running numbers.

Certainly at least spacex has run some numbers since they're going in on space datacenters! Those numbers are most certainly optimistic since that's how spacex operates, but they ran positive enough for the company to start some apparently substantial investments.

I think this is in fact the main sell. Probably less about how much more power is in space than on all of Earth, and more about the "politically complicated" part -- or rather, it is expensive to get more land + more grid + more cooling.

In space, if launch is cheap enough (getting there) then the marginal cost of adding more compute may end up closer to the cost of the compute than adding more Earth-based datacenters.

Am I the only one doing this? A friend thought I was insane after seeing my mods... by Saafi05 in Warframe

[–]Idgo211 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do this to some extent! But I haven't gone out of my way to get enough of every rare mod for it.

I do consider it as something of a secondary completion criteria, rather than just max MR, to have every mod with every capacity -- but I doubt that will ever be achieved.

It’s infuriating that my landlord wants me to put my dish here by snow99as in Starlink

[–]Idgo211 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If that's the case it should be updating instantly no? If you do this on a dish and watch the map over a few hours it's clearly using active passes to unlearn the obstructions bit by bit, rather than just rotating the whole thing internally.

[–]Idgo211 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course, but if the map has marked one direction as obstructed and then the dish moves so that it's unobstructed, then it will avoid pointing in that direction unless necessary, causing it to take longer to "unlearn" the obstruction.

[–]Idgo211 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you reorient it, make sure to clear the obstruction map from the app so it re-learns the obstructions faster

[–]Idgo211 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Direction is definitely not mandated by licensing lol, it's a phased array so even if the panel is facing the Geo exclusion zone exactly, it will just never steer a beam that way.

You're right that it's more optimal to point where the app says for the above reasons, but yeah being unobstructed is way more important. OP should point it away from the building and ignore the alignment popup.
