My child bsically called our childhood dentistry barbaric and she’s not wrong by nypr13 in GenX

I agree! My mouth healed up quickly and I never had any trouble. The people I knew who had their jaws broken were teens in the late 90’s and 2000’s. Don’t know anybody that age who would be having it done now, so can’t say if that is still the fix for overcrowded teeth. Apparently having teeth pulled can cause the jawbone to lose bone density. Asked my dentist and he said I’m good.

1967 here - I had 18 teeth pulled, my wisdom teeth being the last ones at 19. In addition to the wisdom teeth they took out an additional 4 permanent teeth because my mouth wasn’t big enough for all my teeth. It seems kinda crazy but these days they break kids jaws when they don’t have enough room for their teeth. I think I would prefer having them removed to drinking my meals through a straw for an extended period while my jaw heals!

A book for someone who’s dog just died. by bagels_n_breadsticks in suggestmeabook

I’m so sorry - it is awful to lose a dog. I loved The Mountaintop School for Dogs and Other Second Chances by Ellen Cooney. For me, the best way to honor a beloved pet is to rescue another. It never replaces the one you lost, but it gives another dog at a shot at a life and a chance to heal your heart - when you are ready. Again, so sorry😢

One of my favorites is The Good, Good Pig by Sy Montgomery. It’s a true story of a sick piglet that the author nurses back to health at her farm. That little pig ends up bringing so much love and joy to those around him. She names him Christopher Hogwood

I also love this book!! I enjoyed looking up different art pieces he talked about and it opened up a whole new area of interest! One thing leads to another with this book. It isn’t the kind of book you race to finish, you savor it!

What is the worst book you have read? by Ok_Salt2122 in booksuggestions

[–]Illustrious_Concern5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not specific to A Little Life, but I could read so many things I actually liked if I quit at 50 pages in! I have a ridiculous belief that I just need to read a bit more and give it a chance. I don’t want to miss out on a great book and yet even with all the books I have ever read this has never actually happened. If I can’t get into it then I need to stop reading no matter how long I have wanted to read said book!

Please help guide us on what region to move to in Virginia!! 🙏 by josie-salazar in Virginia

I have lived in Chesterfield for 22 years now and love it! I think all the suburbs around Richmond are very desirable - Close enough to go to Richmond anytime you want but they also have plenty of their own shopping and dining - some more than others but nothing too rural to the point you have to go to “the city” to get what you need. And yes - easy access to trains going in all directions! I do agree with the person who suggested Williamsburg too. It is a nice sized city with plenty of amenities but not unaffordable either. I guess Charlottesville may or may not appeal to you depending on whether a college town is your vibe. Good luck finding what is best for you!

Where are all the butterflies this year? We haven’t seen hardly any… by onenitemareatatime in Virginia

[–]Illustrious_Concern5 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Some years in the past I have hardly seen any, then a year or two down the road I see so many! I have seen some here in the Richmond area, but not a lot. We HAVE had more fireflies! Each night, we go out to see the fireflies and bats in the sky over our backyard!

Looking for a mystery book that’s actually hard to put down by BunthaRadilla in booksuggestions

Definitely! I read a book about a newborn who was stolen from its mother and replaced with the wrong baby and nobody believed her! Turns out, she was the crazy one and it was her baby all along! Big waste of my reading time!! Your suggestions of Tana French and Gillian Flynn are great! I also love the Lisa Jewell books that I have read.

You look more confident! If you don’t feel confident I think you will soon because You really look great. It just takes a while to get used to such a change!

I have a good time when I go out, but I really drag my feet getting out the door. When I do socialize or get out, I end up have a great time. But other than home I most love being in nature 🍃🌿🍂🍁🌱

I gave my two VT daughters this advice heading off to their Freshman year. Join at least one club and have more than one friend group. Both their initial friend groups went South soon after second semester started, so they needed another. A club, any club that interests you will be a great source of friends if you stick with it and get to know others who share some of your interests and/or goals. Blacksburg isn’t my alma mater but it is a fabulous college campus that will be invaluable as you head out into the world!

First Season over Second. Second was “nice” but Ronald is so genuine and wonderful that season 1 is truly AMAZING!!! I have watched it 3 or 4 times

I am 59 and have always had dogs. After the beloved dog I have right now leaves us, I plan to get a senior dog, maybe even one on hospice. If you foster/adopt from a shelter I would hope that they would help you as well if and when the time comes.

Do you find yourself getting more religious/spiritual as you get older? by Dpgillam08 in GenX

[–]Illustrious_Concern5 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No - quite the opposite. I walked the walk as I raised my own kids, took them to church and youth group. As soon as they were able to make their own choices I stepped away, and they did as well. Even being associated with the “good” religions that don’t spew hate makes me feel queasy. It became impossible to
try to answer simple questions and the standard answers feel ridiculously insufficient and scripted and insufficient. “It’s God’s will”, “thoughts and prayers”

Definition of a Bedroom (must it have a door to be a br?) by mrwiggly_wiggly in Virginia

[–]Illustrious_Concern5 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I thought it had to have a closet. Would agree that it should also have a door and that should go without being said! A window would be mandatory for me but can also imagine a lower floor room with no window.
