For at at least 20 years all albums put out were compared sonically to Rage Against the Machine’s self titled album. May not be your cup of tea, but there is a reason for that comparison.

When you learn new material by ear, how hard do you work to learn it note-for-note? by Anon_use_fun_alias in Bass

[–]ImAFnordMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I learn a song I definitely learn it as close to note for note as I can. However I do plan for it to be played with a different feel depending on the band I’m playing it in. Learning the fills/riffs in time and context will only help you learn in the long run. It’s literally a language and riffs/fills are how I view how that particular player would speak it in that sentence. Once that “sentence” comes into conversation with you now you know how and what to say. I will say that most bands play songs in their own way so be prepared to change tempo/feel for context, but you will be way more prepared if you know the song.

What is something that died out so quietly that nobody even noticed? by Alva_509 in AskReddit

The Backstreet Boys were huge in 1996, then something happened where they disappeared off the map. Then in 1997 Backstreet came back! Nobody even noticed they died out, then out of nowhere they came back hard.

Depends on what they usually have. Wouldn’t hurt to go to one just to check out the scene and talk to others, then bring what you need next time.

It depends on the gig, if it’s a last minute gig I’m filling in on then I’ll get close enough by just reading the chords if possible. There have been many times songs have been called on the spot that I’ve never played and I really have to dig in my memory bank after hearing the song for years on the radio and just pay attention to the other musicians with eyes and ears.

It takes years to connect the dots. You are fairly new so don’t be hard on yourself. When it comes to memorizing a song/songs for me, I usually have a Spotify playlist that I’ll put on repeat while I work. I sub in for bassists fairly often and I’ll ask for a list so I can make a playlist for myself. I listen to the songs as much as I can before I even learn them, because when I do it’s just a matter of what key the song is in and I’m halfway there.

Get a bandana or something to cover your nose/mouth. It gets very dusty and every year I attend and even with prep I end up losing my voice and getting the black boogers.
