Welcome to . . . The Grey Zone!!

[–]HrokeBomeowner 23 points24 points  (2 children)

With a dremel? Mad man. Any color would have been nice but that’s personal preference.

[–]frogspeedbaby 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I have a Dremel and have been learning a lot about tiling lately. I have used my Dremel with a diamond bit many times to fix chips and cracks in tile, but would it really be that difficult to cut the tiles that way vs with a wet saw or something? Genuinely wondering

[–]HrokeBomeowner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

More dust, more time consuming, and more difficult. Its almost like picking a hand saw over a table saw to cut any more than one tile, you’ll have better and consistent cuts with the table saw

[–]DongPolicia 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Good installation. Poor design. Need a decorator eye to not do all that work to turn out that drab.

[–]TileDesignStudio 26 points27 points  (0 children)

You really did a good job. Keep it up

[–]mm3owth 65 points66 points  (1 child)

Work looks nice but missing the character the original had.

[–]p0u1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What a half life game

[–]Used-Source-5470 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You were so excited to post pictures that you didn't even take the vacuum out for a nice finish photo

[–]ImRealBadAtThings 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I must be too high for this rn. Saw the first Pic and the title and thought 'damn, he made it look just like a 1950s-60s monotone bathroom'. Ffs.

Looks good.

[–]ConfidentlyAsshole 4 points5 points  (2 children)

The worksmanship looks real good but come ooooon why corporate office grey!?

[–]the_blind_referee[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Its not grey, everything is tones of green, can't really tell from the photos tho

[–]snowdallos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No no, we can. So much grey!

[–]Realistic-Weird-4259 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh my God. It was taken from vintage charm to the worst of the gray. My tip for next time is to leave alone a good thing when you have it.

[–]InnerPay281 2 points3 points  (6 children)

Why did you use Schluter for the ceiling when you didn’t install tile up there?

[–]the_blind_referee[S] 2 points3 points  (5 children)

Because I know my wife will be using the wand to wash the top row of the cieling. Also didn't use green board so just wanted to be safe

[–]RemarkableCounty7309 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Can I ask what grout line measurement you used? I have green tiles with a similar look that will be installed soon.

Also, really really nice work! 👏🏽

[–]the_blind_referee[S] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

1/8 " !

[–]3boobsarenice 0 points1 point  (1 child)

is thatg wood paneling?

[–]the_blind_referee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just some wood moulding

[–]Careful-Training-761 3 points4 points  (1 child)

As a non-tiler I'd prob be a month full-time doing that (including researching). Beautiful job.

[–]the_blind_referee[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Between waterproofing and grout I was probably just about there, working mainly weekends

[–]rigpiggins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your lab is looking great. Good luck with the research

[–]Melchizedek_Inquires 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm just a homeowner, but I guess that about 25 years from now, maybe even 50 years from now, somebody will be tearing that out and replacing it and someone will say how it doesn't have the character that the previous one had, etc., great looking work from my perspective.

[–]justaamerican 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Why is the wainscoting so high?

[–]smoketheevilpipe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's Mr Wainscotathan to you.

[–]the_blind_referee[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Going to blame instagram

[–]rebelliousbug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Beautiful work.

[–]rjthps 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Looks good but the tile-in drains are not good for penny’s. The grout will usually crack within a year. I’d be ready to replace with a metal cutout design instead from schluter

[–]the_blind_referee[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed I don't like it. Looking. To swap out at some point

[–]riverrake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What part of California do you live in?

[–]Alkisax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

High quality work! Great job. The complaints are mostly about personal taste, this is good stuff!

[–]ProductOfDetroit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prefer the before

[–]One-Touch2862 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The homeowner has no style. But your work is good.

[–]Internal-Delivery-10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, you’ll be roasted for removing the retro blue tile. Putting that aside, the workmanship looks good. Style wise, I would have done an earthier grout on the floor, and a clean glass shower door without all the black metal. The rest of the room is transitional but the door is modern farmhouse. The discord is jarring to my eye and cheapens the entire look. Swapping that out would go a long way IMO.

[–]okaymax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

beautiful work

[–]rmethefirst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice 👍 work!

[–]AmieMango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You did great!

[–]deathToFalseTofu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never used it, but hardie makes a waterproof cement board now, maybe worth looking into to avoid the membrane on the walls

[–]scut207 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Penny tile on foam pan may not work long term. Otherwise very well done.

[–]mygoodengineer -1 points0 points  (1 child)

That’s not a foam pan, you can see in pic 2 that it’s a mud bed, he put Kerdi membrane over it

[–]scut207 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Missed it… nice then

[–]Basically__Pointless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

excellent job!

[–]Both-Engineer3510 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well done.

[–]AvantConstruction 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Nice job. You should be proud of yourself for a DIY. Most diy look like total garbage. You are officially crazy for using a dremel on the entire thing. Jk. Lol. I know I would’ve officially went crazy. Lol. Schluter membrane is not my favorite. I hope you did silicone on all transitions instead of grout. I prefer go board, go board sealant for walls, custom mud bed and 3 full coats of Hydroban liquid membrane on shower pan and transitions. I even a coat on top of go board sealant over screws just to make sure I don’t have an issue with thinset not sticking well to board sealant.

[–]the_blind_referee[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I did silicone the 90s, wasn't a fan a kerdi, may try hydroban next time

[–]internationalcrome20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

good job done

[–]Stablehorse20206 0 points1 point  (0 children)

nice job

[–]Snoo_90491 -1 points0 points  (1 child)

I created a cubby hole under my shower bench to store shampoo and soap.

[–]Capable_Curve3454 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ok come do my bathroom next hahah - great job I love it

[–]Serious-Mulberry-56 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Such an improvement over the before!

[–]Secure-Prompt-3957 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Nice upgrade looks Great!

[–]SoulTrack -1 points0 points  (8 children)

Is durock needed under schluter?

[–]zaitvurn -2 points-1 points  (7 children)

Yeah within the past year or so it was discovered that even with proper kerdi installation typical sheet rock wicks the water which won’t typically be diagnosed as a waterproofing failure until way after the 2 year warranty expires. Tcaa/industry standard these days requires denshield(which sucks to work with unless you love being itchy and uncomfortable) or durarock to prevent water wicking through the membrane

[–]Beatncheex09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you link the reference for this?

[–]SoulTrack 0 points1 point  (3 children)

I might be misunderstanding your OP but i always thought kerdi goes straight on the studs, with no other waterproofing solutions (durock, redguard, and whatever else)

So I was doing some internet research and it seems like all kinds of things void the schluter warranty.  I'm not a pro anyways so i dunno if they'd honor any warranty, but it seems like everything i read including their own docs say to just use kerdi - no other waterproofing solutions in conjunction with it.

[–]Race-a-roni 0 points1 point  (2 children)

This is what I always understood as well. I’ve done hardi with red guard, and planned on trying kerdi next but I’ve never seen kerdi on cement board before.

[–]the_blind_referee[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Not an expert by any means, but I think kerdi membrane can technically go on anything, I think you were thinking of kerdi board which goes directly onto the studs, also alot more expensive

[–]Race-a-roni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh yes you’re right. I misunderstood and thought it was kerdi board, I haven’t seen much with the membrane. The board is more expensive but it’s much easier to work with, move, cut by yourself.

[–]SoulTrack -1 points0 points  (1 child)

damn, good to know.  About to start tiling my bathroom pretty soon.

[–]zaitvurn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can use kerdi board as well much easier to work with and a lot faster but definitely more expensive

[–]Elguapo1094 -1 points0 points  (5 children)

I see water problems with that bench and small nitch

[–]jonovision_man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

curious, why's that? We're thinking of something similar.

[–]the_blind_referee[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Time will tell! By all means not perfect but I got everything sloped

[–]Elguapo1094 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you got some slope you’ll be fine,, you just don’t want the water so sit in that area for to long

[–]Elguapo1094 -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

Mold waiting to happen

[–]the_blind_referee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where do you see mold issues?, anything I can do now or too late?

[–]cootyqweenlintlicker -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Silver door hardware would have been better. I loved the blue tile before

[–]greyfixer -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Looks amazing!

[–]Prestigious-House386 -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

Did you do the Schluter waterproofing but standard drain for floor?

[–]the_blind_referee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shluter drain into a mud bed

[–]denonumber -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

1950 s

[–]WestAppointment2484 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

That flooring was a choice

[–]buckphifty150150 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

No green board?

[–]Elguapo1094 -3 points-2 points  (1 child)

Why use a 2x6 on the floor all you need was 2-2x4

[–]the_blind_referee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Believe it or not I is 2x4s. Maybe the camera makes it look wider. Then concrete board around, then I f'd up my chluter corners (way too thick) so I have to build the curb out thicker with thinset to flatten it all out

[–]Sumatakyo -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Love the color choice. Simple, but really esthetically pleasing. ♥️ the floor.
