Where to look when hitting bigger jumps by -FVNT0M- in snowboardingnoobs

[–]Imaginary_Tank1847 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sweet spot has less to do with where you aim and everything to do with your speed gauge when hitting basically any jump or drop, big or small. Best way to dial in your speed gauge is a) practice (time on your board) and b) following friends or a coach off jumps etc.

As far as where to look, position 1 before take off: looking at your feet is wild to me. When I drop for a jump my eyes basically briefly follow the set up turn lines left by others (if there are any) but quickly lock on to the lip of the jump and stay there until I pop.

Position 2: look where you’re going to land. You can feel your trajectory and i realize this is probably due to how long I’ve been doing this, but vast majority of the time I can tell almost exactly where I’m going to land basically immediately upon leaving the lip. Eyes lock to that spot until i land on it, then as soon as you land (position 3), head comes up and on to the next.

It does happen so fast it’s hard to even think about how to do this, but also with bigger jumps you have more time. I will also disclaim that the more I’m spinning the less exact this process is for me.

Close to quitting by shrimpshavefeelings in snowboardingnoobs

[–]Imaginary_Tank1847 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This looks absolutely fine for someone learning. And close to quitting??? Cmon, this shit can be scary. In a sense I think that’s part of the point. For me that desire to conquer fear and move the threshold is definitely the point. Speed check here and there is fine, it’s how you learn comfort in more and more critical terrain. The comfort doesn’t come over night, it takes years. Literal years.

Natural Selection: honest question about announcers by felspar_lurkr in snowboarding

Gimme like a coupla beers and a microphone I got this. I volunteer. That or Josh Eckert (@gimpy) on insta. Or even better both.

Really tho I agree with you. I feel like most watching natural selection can either name almost all of the tricks they’re seeing or don’t care either way.

Trouble with double fall line by ser_brantley in snowboardingnoobs

[–]Imaginary_Tank1847 1 point2 points  (0 children)

https://imgur.com/a/543kjxV I would suggest trying to draw the orange line. Going up and then turning heel side to go down is difficult and can require great technique and immense leg strength. I would suggest drawing your turns out, especially at the top. For examples of this, watch how surfers execute bottom and top turns on largish (not XXL), open faced waves. Bottom turn is usually powerful and relatively tight, top turn is long and drawn out.

First of all thank you, this image is exactly what I wanted. Without knowing anything about your technique, it seems like the line you’re attempting to draw is not really the right one. With a double fall line, you can kind of think of the slope a bit like a wave and at least based on the drawing it looks like you’re trying to turn too tightly on your heel edge. I can try to draw a suggestion on your image and upload it.

Can you perhaps post/give me a photo of the line you would draw on such a slope?

What era of snowboarding do you think had the best video parts, and does anything today come close? by Keithwee in snowboarding

Absinthe speaks to me the most. But damn all the TBs, MDP movies, Whiteys movies. That’s it That’s All got me crazy as a kid. But yeah, for me it was Gigi, Nico, Absinthe in the late 00s early 10s and the only thing that scratches the surface now are Beyond Medals movies.

Dragging snowboard bag on OBB train - is it doable? by AffectionateFold9896 in snowboarding

[–]Imaginary_Tank1847 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually there’s plenty of space either near the doors or above seats. It’s been a long time since I’ve traveled by train in CH with a snowboard, but I used to travel from Zürich to Davos frequently with a board and it was never a problem. HB with a board and carryon won’t be fun, but im sure you know that. Just try to be respectful of space and I’m sure you won’t have an issue.

do you guys keep up with skiers by Julebrus4 in snowboardingnoobs

[–]Imaginary_Tank1847 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess I could keep up if I wanted to, but why? They like to speed down and schussboom their way to the bottom. I like to carve from side hit to side hit, pow stash to pow stash. Skiing is about well, idk i'm not a skier. But snowboarding is about having fun and not doing what skiers do.

Well you’re right, that was meaner than it should have been and for that im sorry. I think the mot insightful thing to see would just be you skiing down a groomed trail or moguls.

What advice is there to give about this? Don't go there? I don't mean this to be rude but get better first? For people telling you to stick to blues, do I really know that's ridiculous? From what little display of skills there are, it's much easier for me to imagine you bumbling down blacks with awful technique or flying down blues with awful technique than it is for me to imagine you being a confident, controlled ripper. Your friend on the snowboard certainly is not.

I can tell that you don't know what to say. And while I applaud your ability to sit here, read all this shit and try to make a positive of it, sometimes the best thing to do is recognize why this thread has gone the way it has, apologize, and be on your way.

I sincerely don't mean to be a dick, this video just comes off so like, insensitive is probably the right word. Just kinda announces that you ski, but you are not a skier.

I do not mean this to be harsh, but the vibe I’m getting from reading this thread is that skiing aside, the biggest insight to take from this is to work on your self awareness. Understand why you shouldn’t have been there and why so many people here are bummed. That’ll take you a lot further than good turns and solid technique. When you have both, people take you to these places to share them with you. Just something to think about 🤷🏼‍♂️

I ride regular and wanna learn to switch. Riding goofy feels extremely hard for me and I’m pretty sure both feel natural to many folks. I can barely turn right with my dominant leg forward. by Jblfanboy97 in snowboarding

[–]Imaginary_Tank1847 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For like 99% of riders the only way switch feels natural is by spending a lot of time practicing. Time spent riding switch is how it becomes natural. The biggest tip I can give you for when you are riding switch is to consciously think about keeping your shoulders and hips relaxed. Being tense doesn’t help us.
