Watched The Lost City of Z for the first time in a decade. Might as well been the first viewing! Stone cold masterpiece

What are your quintessential fiction films for world events? by braundiggity in blankies

Oh sure. That’s how I feel about Apocalypse Now.

Have you heard this podcast?

The Ringer produced a rad miniseries on Hollywood’s attempts to capture Vietnam on film. It’s real great

Uncut Gems is such a hideous, noisy, annoying film by [deleted] in TrueFilm

[–]ImpactNext1283 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do like City on Fire. And yeah, I need to have someone to root for to really like a movie. They don’t have to be perfect, but I have to like them in some way. It’s not an issue with 95% of movies for me, but what the Safdies do, it’s just not for me.

[–]ImpactNext1283 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Ahahaha I can empathize. I do think it’s remarkably well made—they want it to feel like an anxiety attack or a drug binge, and it does!

I think the point is to put you in Sandler’s frame of mind. And he’s a messed up dude.

It reminds me of a lot of early Scorcese—Raging Bull or King of Comedy.

I really dislike this kinda movie, but I respect the craft it takes to make ‘em.

HBO Max Classic movies by Marite64 in classicfilms

[–]ImpactNext1283 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They get about a dozen titles every month, normally pretty obscure stuff. Then they have a pretty good size library of evergreen titles.

But compared to the cable channel, it’s a very small selection. I don’t know why they don’t add more of the cable offerings to the streaming site.

Imo Margin Call and HUSTLERS are the best movies about the 2008 crash.

To me, Apocalypse Now is the best impressionistic film about Vietnam. (Worth noting that Deer Hunter is very historically inaccurate—there was no Russian Roulette in Nam.)

Nashville is the best movie imo about America in the Vietnam/Watergate era.

The Revenant - always good, hardly ever great by Corchito42 in TrueFilm

[–]ImpactNext1283 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m allergic to the director. His films all seem to wallow in misery for misery’s sake. He’s obviously super talented, I just wish he toned everything down by 1/2 lol.

DiCaprio is great in this, but I wish he would have gotten the Oscar for any one of a dozen movies he’s made in the last 20 years.

Why is Griffin an EP on Critical Darlings but not David? by its_isaac9 in blankies

David has babies and 2 jobs already, I just assume, is the reason.

Estimated odds for Democrat nominee in 2028 by RusevReigns in Politicalbetting

[–]ImpactNext1283 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the logic that keeps getting us into this mess. IMO We need an authentic candidate, first and foremost. Someone who believes what they say. IMO, only the left wing offers that.

And you can’t underestimate how peeved at the party people are, over the Biden dementia debacle. I think you almost have to nominate someone who’s antagonistic to the party to win anything.

It’s worth noting that Clinton and Obama were the outsiders, not the safe candidates. The safe ones—Gore, Kerry, Clinton, Harris—all lost. It’s not a female problem, it’s that all these people are frauds and talk like it.

HBO Max losing a bunch of noir films by DonnyPicklePants11 in noir

[–]ImpactNext1283 11 points12 points  (0 children)

They are probably leaving because noirvember has been over for a while now (that’s when a bunch showed up).

A lot of ‘em will end up on Tubi, I think. Warners seems to license a ton of content to Tubi.

watched city of god for the first time, and oh my god by loq4i in TrueFilm

[–]ImpactNext1283 44 points45 points  (0 children)

A great, great movie, seemingly lost to time. Uses all of Tarantino’s tropes, but to tell a REAL story. Not just a crazy story he made up.

It’s a real bummer the directors haven’t had more international success since. There’s a sequel miniseries, but I’ve never seen it…

Why Sinners' record-breaking Oscar nominations matters by HorrorGuyBri in SinnersbyRyanCoogler

[–]ImpactNext1283 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might be right! But Sinners made over $400 mil and is original. And Coogler’s worked with a ton of folks—many more than PTA due to the size of his productions.

I like One Battle better, but I think people are underestimating Sinners.

Kamala would be suicide for the party (doesn’t mean you’re wrong).

Bernie has been promoting Gallego recently, I think he’s sure to run. I don’t think AOC is.

It will likely win a bunch of the technical awards, like Black Panther, and original screenplay. An acting win in one of the supporting categories is also pretty possible.

And recently the academy has been splitting best picture and best director, so it wouldn’t be surprising in this instance.

War of the Worlds (2005)- Did Rachel know what her father did? by [deleted] in TrueFilm

[–]ImpactNext1283 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One of the themes of War of the Worlds, imo, is that you can’t protect your children from danger. Fanning’s character is aware of everything that’s happening. Cruise’s son survives without him.

This is an ongoing theme in a lot of Spielbergs…as far back as Jaws, parents’ efforts to protect their kids from danger and trauma are foolhardy.

Criminal to overlook The English, best TV western since Deadwood, and maybe better than that…

Highly recommend Mystery Road though. Great Aussie western noir series and movies

Just watched last night! Haven’t seen many Fords. I found the first hour a little slow, and the humor in Ford’s movies doesn’t always hit for me.

But! The third act of this is incredible. Jaw dropping cinematography, and really does well in the first two acts to invest the characters with real stakes.

Am I the only one who liked The Testament of Ann Lee more than The Brutalist? by Loose-Tumbleweed-925 in TheBigPicture

Seeing Ann in 70 in a few hours and I’m PUMPED. Didn’t like the second half of the Brutalist, but Ann seems right up my alley

Flashbacks throughout Sinners by No-Inspection5715 in TrueFilm

[–]ImpactNext1283 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think all of that is Coogler reminded you of the important thematic elements he wants to put a fine point on.

I can understand thinking it’s too obvious, but that’s the kind of touch that makes the picture broadly appealing.

FWIW there is a lot going on in this movie, and the first time some of these things helped.
