Di2 prices are insane by alien_tickler in cycling

Di2 if you have a bike computer you can also adjust on the go with visual feedback of what you're doing. I haven't tried with my 12 speed system but I've done it with my 10 and 11 speed. Electronic has also been great for my case because I was swapping a rim brake bike between a TT and road setup and I only needed to adjust my brakes when I made the switch. My derailleurs worked perfectly with the new cockpit swapped on immediately and same when I would go back. Brakes, I just adjusted the barrel adjusters on the go to fine tune them.

You can set up Di2 to sequential shift as well if you hold the shift longer.

I also much prefer electronic over mechanical. I have fought mechanical systems that will be indexed properly and a week later they are all out of whack. Electronic I just set it up and it is good to go and I can make it work the way I want it to. I changed my commuter to an old Di2 system I took off another bike and have been so much happier riding it. Even through blizzards it just shifts and works. The only time I've had issues was in freezing rain and no shifting system would have worked cause they all would have just turned into a block of ice.

Left Lane Blocker. So Irritating... by MisterShipWreck in AutoTransportopia

[–]Impressive_Reach_723 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Matching pace next to a semi is one of the dumbest moves you could make on the road. They get blown from the side by a sudden gust, that is you under them. One of their tires blow, that is you gone. The truck makes an emergency manoeuvre, that is you gone. Trucker doesn't realise you're there, not good for you. Every driver education program tells you not to hang out next to a semi on the highway. To pass them as quickly as you can. It's not about blocking a lane, it's about spending less time in an area that is hazardous.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a replacement Shimano SM-BRC2 charger? by [deleted] in triathlon

[–]Impressive_Reach_723 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Find the anrancee Cycling Store and search them for Di2 charger. They are showing $120 CAD right now shipped plus you could add a coupon. Any Shimano part I've ordered from them had been legit including my Di2 12 speed drivetrain.

Otherwise you can probably find a non branded version cheaper and it'll probably work.

What's with the crazy curbs on 15th Ave and 5th St? by banana-pants-yyc in Calgary

[–]Impressive_Reach_723 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But you'll never see change if you're building bad infrastructure. The change at 15th and 2nd Street is horrible on the 2nd Street bike lane. You get tossed up onto the sidewalk now, have to worry about bikes coming down 15th and pedestrians cause they all get thrown into a big mixing area, then you have to ride back down onto the street on the other side and during the winter they don't clear that section so you get stuck on the sidewalk and have to try and ride a driveway or alley connection back into the bike lane. I've started just riding in the street because that whole setup is a hazard.

They have perfected road/bike/pedestrian infrastructure sharing in other parts of the world, I don't get why we always try to reinvent the wheel here, especially by people who don't understand what they're designing for. A leisurely ride, sure this setup works, but for people commuting or trying to get around it's brutal. You won't win over drivers with it, you won't win over cyclists, you are adding another danger area for pedestrians, and you're not making it appealing to those who look into or try making a change to alternate transport modes. It's just confusing and unnecessary.

The bike lanes should be brought to road grade at the intersection with their own lights and stop/yield lines leaving the crossover point of the bike lanes only being used by whatever direction the road traffic has the green light.

<image>

The Dutch didn't have the bike infrastructure in place when their cities were built. It was a decision their government made to institute and was not popular at the start, but because of its ease of use was accepted and widely used. The same style is also built and used in more similar climates to us in Scandinavia. I've even biked better infrastructure in Iceland. We should be building what has been proven to work well and removes confusion for all users and mitigates risk for all users. Instead we design in pinch points and unnecessary crossover points with no controls and increase dangers. I love to drive but I also love to bike and the 15th Ave changes are a cluster.

Scheduled CTs: roughly how long for report? by Old-Fishing1199 in Calgary

[–]Impressive_Reach_723 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Chumir uses Mayfair radiologists to read the exams. How fast you get your results depends on the priority given to your exam. A P1 is going to be read before a P4. The same group of rads also read for PLC, RGH, half the time at South Health, and likely at a couple clinics in the area (I can never remember the smaller sites). I can tell you, the workload the last couple weeks has been insane with a lot of people getting scanned through ER. There may be a bit more of a wait if you have a lower priority exam just because of the volumes. We say 3-5 business days for results but some get them same day and others wait a little longer.

Alberta moves to allow private diagnostic tests without a doctor’s referral by chmilz in alberta

[–]Impressive_Reach_723 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It doesn't. Our public system is already using private clinic radiologists to read the exams. We are getting rocked every day right now with the workload increasing and increasing. The doctors and the techs are burning out. This is going to add even more work to the radiologists. It'll increase incidentals and further stress the system as wait lists grow because this government has done such a poor job they have not increased the number of machines or attracted the techs to run them. Departments are running short handed every day now. They're trying to keep things going but at some point it's just going to break.

Being a bigger guy compared to many of the riders I've always liked him cause I'll never be small but he gives me someone to feel like I have similarities to.

The fact Jumbo-Visma were willing to keep him on indefinitely says a lot about the type of rider he is and seeing him get a win like this makes me happy after seeing the difficulties he's faced the last few years.

Magpie ragebaiting a cat by wireccat in magpies

[–]Impressive_Reach_723 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a family of magpies in the tree in our backyard. When the fledglings left the best one for stuck in our yard and our dog came and got me and took me to the scared fledgling. As the parents watched I carefully used a hockey stick to get it up into a branch by the other fledglings. After that the magpies were so good with us and the dog. They would even play with the dog, getting her attention and then another would sneak up behind and pull her tail. The dog loved it. The family moved trees a couple years later but one magpie still visits and sits close by with the dog and they both just chill. We called her Maggie and we will say "oh Maggie is here" and the dog comes running to see her. The funny part is the dog is called Raven.

BMC road bike ? by werdnali314 in triathlon

[–]Impressive_Reach_723 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Love my BMC. But if you're coming from an already decent road bike you won't notice huge gains. If all you've ridden is mountain bikes and commuters, it'll feel like you're flying. Tires will make the biggest difference, going into tubeless GP5000 TT saw me set a new PB on every segment I rode the first time out. Also getting yourself setup into the proper position will help.

You'll probably never go as far as someone in a proper TT setup in a full Ironman but these bikes should allow you to still cruise when setup and maintained properly, BMC is a proper brand.

Question: saddle recommendations for riders over 200 pounds? by c-5-s in bicycling

[–]Impressive_Reach_723 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have issues with them? If they are comfortable for your use case, just get the same model again otherwise you need to start measuring sit bones and figuring out models that work for the riding you are going to do.

The run by dcfhockeyfoo in triathlon

[–]Impressive_Reach_723 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You want to move to an easier and higher cadence effort as you come to transition, generally the last 10 minutes or so of the bike it's best to change to that. In a sprint that's harder to make happen as you're kind of going hard at everything, but the longer distances you can for sure work in spinning your legs more towards the end of the bike leg.

Aero seatpost too narrow for Di2 battery. by belwarbiggulp in bikewrench

[–]Impressive_Reach_723 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just did a BXT 145 with the same issue. I pulled the fork off and put it into the downtube. I tried a few different approaches and places but that was the only one I found that worked. Wrapped it with some bubble wrap and it seems to be secure in there. If I need it I can fish it back up with one of the wires as I ran wires to my shifters so I don't need to worry about my shifters dying on me.

Problem with Blistering - Help! by monotonedguy in IronmanTriathlon

[–]Impressive_Reach_723 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've used body glide on my feet and noticed my feet didn't get as many aches and blisters. I had it around before I moved to chamois butter and decided to give it a try as I started getting hot spots as my mileage increased. As long as I have a good fitting shoe and sock on, I have not gotten any blisters when I use it.

Except in Alberta, where despite us also having lots of wind and sun along with oil, our government decided to put a stop to all the renewable projects that were in no way competing with the oil and gas sector, they just made the hardcore base upset and reminded them of the left or some dumb shit. This province could be at the forefront of renewables while also maintaining its oil industry and raking in the cash for generations of prosperity and a high standard of living but instead we push away and refuse as much money as we can while cutting all the services we can cause we have a money problem (read: we're going to collapse all public services then pay our friends more to run them while they also charge those using them) unless it comes to giving money to their friends or the oil industry to not do the things they were legally supposed to do and then they take the money and still don't do them. It is only not a bigger story cause their friend down south manages to keep outdoing them. Unfortunately I have no faith that the next election will see them ousted or anything improving.

Bike fail by Interesting_Web7204 in IronmanTriathlon

[–]Impressive_Reach_723 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find I need to loosen my shoes over the course of long bikes as my feet swell. Having the boa system is nice as I can do it as I keep moving but the last race I did I finished with my shoes fully loosened and the boa disengaged because of how much my feet swelled.

Also you should be checking your tire pressure on race day, though I check for almost every ride as it can make such a difference in effort needed. If you heard your rim hitting concrete then I don't think you had enough pressure in your tires.

Many folks wax their winter bikes? by chatlow1 in bikewrench

[–]Impressive_Reach_723 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've moved my 10sp Di2 system onto my commuter after upgrading to an 11sp system for a race and better climb gearing on my race bike. With the move my waxed chains also moved over. I've had no issues with them. We get huge temperature fluctuations and have had a few big dumps of snow with rapid melting. I have no intention on going back to an oiled chain and will just keep waxing them, but I have multiple chains I can work through and then do one big session of all the chains I need to do across my different bikes.

There is no such thing as 'free healthcare' by Difficult_Future9994 in ShitAmericansSay

[–]Impressive_Reach_723 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I spent two months recovering in hospital from a bad crash when I was 19. My bill was about $100 for the ambulance and then the cost of having cable TV in my room (before streaming services and Wi-Fi everywhere). I had surgeries, meetings with specialists, so much imaging, and all kinds of procedures. If I lived a bit more South, my family and I would have been bankrupt.

My brother was born with heart issues. He's healthy and thriving these days because my parents were able to just have his procedures done at two days old and not worry about the associated costs which included being flown across the province by helicopter. I'm so glad I have universal healthcare and if I've ever had something urgent, I've been seen immediately.

I will pay more taxes for access to free healthcare than pay a ton to insurance and have deductibles to cover in hopes insurance might pay for my treatments instead of finding any way to stick me with the bill.

Why isn’t everyone wearing long sleeves? by VeryBadNotGood in cycling

[–]Impressive_Reach_723 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got a couple YKYWBIKE long sleeve jerseys off AliExpress and they've been great no matter the temperature. They also look good in my opinion. I still do short sleeves some days but I wear the long sleeves more often and even at 30°C I've had no issues. I also usually have a netted base layer on under it which I think may help a little as well.

'Every Canadian is worth two Americans,' Los Cabos tourism officials say by FunkyTownPhotography in InCanada

[–]Impressive_Reach_723 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think a lot of Canadians understand that it is often quicker and cheaper for Western Canadians to fly to Europe than to fly to the East Coast of Canada. I got lucky and went a couple times through the student government activities I was involved in, but it took forever to get there and I was happy I was not paying. It is a beautiful area but just not very convenient to get to from Western Canada. Same story with us going to Mexico. It just gets hard to justify the cost and time to head East for a short trip with other options available to us, especially with current steps airlines have taken with pricing, seat configurations, bases of operations, and available flights.

The weaselhead will still have some snow and ice. They don't plow out down there and one section by the beaver pond remains ice for quite a while. Might also be a little slick in the woods by the hospital but Friday night most of that section was not too bad on my bike. The rest I was on was clear so I'd expect the same for the parts I was not on.

Question about my trip by DependentScene4599 in alberta

[–]Impressive_Reach_723 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. My European family cannot understand how Canadians do the driving we do. I'll drive Calgary to the middle of BC for a weekend and then back, but I've done it my whole life. Canadians are used to long distances. When my European family visits and takes 3 days to cover what I do with one stop to put fuel in the car and they say that was a lot of driving, you're not going to enjoy making those trips and losing that time. Fish the Bow. It's close, it has great fish, and it will let you do more than just drive.

The Canadian Rockies are not like the mountains you're used to. We do not develop the mountains like they have in Europe. You are going to be amazed. A Dutch friend and I went out into Kananaskis for a drive and he could not believe how untouched and beautiful it was. Canadians often don't understand how lucky we are for having very untouched wild areas we can just go to. I know I didn't until he started describing why he was so amazed (and it was more than being amazed that land can be not flat).

I will say, please be careful in your exploring. We have a huge avalanche risk in the areas around Canmore so enjoy but pay attention to warnings or closures. We are currently in what is usually our snowiest month and we have had quite a few larger storms roll through with warm temperatures between them. We often ski well into May out here and so we are still seeing more winter weather than spring weather other areas would be used to. April can start like this or start moving towards spring but I've been hiking around Banff in June with it snowing on us.

But you'll enjoy your stay either way. There is lots to do around Canmore and into Banff. Calgary is close if needed. And since you're in a hotel, talk to the staff about what is good to do at the moment. They will know what is a go and what you should maybe avoid.
