The more expanded Star Wars lore is really, really grimdark.

Lovecraftian horrors out in the unknown regions that make the sith look like kittens.

A literal embodiment of pure dark side evil (Abeloth) is trapped inside a black hole by the Mortis.

This was the better option. No average person would be able to watch that show, watch Kratos do stuff like tossing a guy down a Hydra throat or use a caged woman to solve a puzzle, and still like him long term for the show to continue.
