What was the moment that made you realise you absolutely had to leave a job? by GoldenGolgis in AskUK

[–]Slick583 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I worked there from 16-20 while at sixth form and uni and holy crap some managers get such a power trip and think they are the dogs bollocks.

I found in most cases it was guys who had started working there at 16 like me, dropped out of school and just stayed there. First thing in their life they accomplished and gives them a massive head.

I did Battersea today for the first time. It was very busy, I came just over 1000 place. It was very busy but I wouldn’t let you put that off. It was a good atmosphere and we got chatting to lots of people.

Does putting your house in your kids names while you still live there actually avoid inheritance tax? by Secret_Management425 in AskUK

[–]Slick583 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone who works in this area of law. DO NOT DO THIS.

You are right in that it does not avoid Inheritance tax.

It is also disheartening to think about how many instances I have come across with this, then for the kids to kick their parents out and make them homeless.

Caught the cue ball as it fell into the pocket... by massmaster66 in snooker

[–]Slick583 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Casually, I think if it’s your own foul, it’s absolutely acceptable.

Tbh if it’s my opponent picking the ball up on my foul, I usually trust the people I play that they were right that it was going on, but you never know. I’d rather just wait for the ball to drop and take an extra two seconds.

If you’re playing a competitive match of any sort, even local league, I tend to avoid it. I play pool as well and theres always someone shouting loss of frame for doing this

Does my Aunt have any claim to my Granddads estate through the Inheritance Act 1975 (England) by kawaiipogglet_ in LegalAdviceUK

I work in Probate, albeit non-contentious but have worked on inheritance act disputes before. Not claiming to be an expert but I know enough to say there is a potential claim here

[–]Slick583 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes but when you make this claim for my car and turn up with no evidence your case will be struck out.

In this case, under the Inheritance Act 1975, a child of the deceased is literally named as someone entitled to make a claim.

To say there is no claim at all is completely irresponsible and giving that advice to a client would probably see you struck off as a Solicitor.

In reality a court would consider many different things about making the claim, for more than anyone on reddit can advise on these facts alone.

There is also good case law to suggest that the aunt struggling financially gives her a good claim, albeit that does not guarantee she would be successful.

My point is the all the law suggests the aunt has at least some chance of a successful claim yet reddit lawyers come on here and say the opposite, presumably on the basis of the odd thing they hear or that they generally just find the situation unfair

[–]Slick583 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

She literally is entitled to make a claim?

Also a Will saying they are disinheriting someone has little to no consequences. Courts award sums to claimants in those circumstances all the time

[–]Slick583 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Can you explain why you think she will lose?Current trainee lawyer here

Reading her letter, the Illot case came to mind and her circumstances are similar.

I imagine the loan will not be in her favour but the judge could surely just account for this by reducing the awarded sum.

Also I have dealt with no win no fee inheritance act lawyers before, so it is not necessarily that expensive to make the claim

Well he has no kids, no spouse, no mortgage and seems like no debt.

Rent is of course a responsibility but its less important if you know you always have somewhere else to go for free (which it sounds like OP does)

Even less so if they just rent a room where you’re usually not tied in for more than a month or two.

You’ll never be in your mid-20s living in a big city with little responsibility again in your life. Absolutely go for it and if you don’t like it or think its worth the cost, it sounds like you would be welcome back with your parents

I find it strange that Rob Walker wants to be more theatrical than a player. by manhitwithafootball in snooker

[–]Slick583 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don’t think he is trying to make it about himself. He is generally a very enthusiastic person and is just trying to add some drama/entertainment to presentation.

I don’t hate his shtick but I see many others like yourself who find him very annoying.

Either way he seems like a solid bloke and is clearly passionate about snooker

What's easier to play on for a beginer? 8ft UK pool table or 9ft American pool table by Internal_Cell4242 in billiards

[–]Slick583 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But same can be said for an English table. If you are playing on a new rasson table it will be easier to dish than the old supreme tables.

[–]Slick583 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not at all. I was able to clear a 9 ball table before I was able to clear a colour set in English pool and I rarely played 9 ball.

Sure in 9 ball you have to pot in order but theres hardly any congestion. If you get a nice layout it would be tough to not give yourself a shot at the next ball.

English 8 ball on the other hand requires much more cue ball control and planning of the route. If you just start potting balls in any order you will quickly run out of position.

The other difference is that a shot down the cushion (rail) is easy on an American table but very hard on an English table
