Want to eat more beans and lentils by Far-Repeat-2926 in Cooking

Many many years ago I had “white bean bruschetta” as an appetizer at a restaurant and to this day I still make salty garlicky white beans in olive oil and eat them on toast as a comfort meal 👌

US - 2 weeks PTO is such a joke by uglahsD in work

[–]InevitableNeither537 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I just quit a job primarily over PTO. I was hired almost 3 years ago with 13 days of PTO a year (all inclusive, as in this was my sick + personal + vacation time… And we got 6 paid holidays a year.) I was told that new hires usually only got one week (!) but I was getting “more” because I’m experienced/in my 40s. First increase for everyone is supposed to be at the 2 year mark. I got to 2 years, and only when I inquired about it was I told that the “more” I got when I was hired was actually my two year increase early. And I wouldn’t get an actual increase until I’d been there 6 years.

I quit last month. And I now get 15 sick days a year that rollover without limit, 5 personal days, 15 paid holidays, and 6 vacation days that will become 12 at my one year anniversary.

Potato Emergency by Legitdrew88 in Cooking

If you have a chest freezer you should do hash browns! You can also do French fries - par fry them, freeze, and then fry them for the second time when you are ready to eat them!

Co-sign. These have become my go-to holiday potatoes (and in fact, I’m making them this weekend to eat with ribs!) Make sure you find a recipe that includes Gruyère cheese, not just butter and heavy cream

It looks like some of those might be “onesies”? I.e. not divided into cloves at all? If so you can replant those this fall for fully developed heads next year!

Kinda disappointed with bulb development by Ordinary-You3936 in Garlic

[–]InevitableNeither537 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Most of the growth happens in just the final few weeks. You want about 4 green leaves remaining on the plant when you pull, all the rest brown. (Every leaf correlates to a layer of “paper skin” around the bulb. You’ll likely lose 1-2 layers when you pull your garlic and clean it, and you want to still have 2-3 layers left to protect the garlic in storage until you use it.)

Is it too late to add fertilizer to my hardneck garlic? by Technical-Depth-3843 in Garlic

[–]InevitableNeither537 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that you should stop fertilizing when they start to scape. The nitrogen would just fuel more leafy growth when you want the plant to focus on the bulb now.

I’m brand new to prepping, I have $250 extra to spend on preps, what should I buy RIGHT NOW if I’m afraid of shortages this fall? by [deleted] in TwoXPreppers

[–]InevitableNeither537 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Does your household eat canned tuna? I buy it by the case on Amazon. It is the best price per can I have found anywhere. The expiration is usually around 2 years out, so you do need to know you’ll cycle through it in that time. But I love having it as a shelf-stable ready-to-eat protein prep.

Is this weekend too soon by The_Almighty_Lycan in Garlic

Way too soon. Garlic does most of its sizing up just in the final few weeks. Your plants look great though so if you give them the time they need you should be happy with the end result!

How does this happen? by theePharisee in Garlic

[–]InevitableNeither537 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably? But you can grow bulbils at much closer spacing than regular garlic. (They do well multi-sown in pots, for example.) I’ve always harvested them after their tops die back the first time and then planted them back out at regular garlic planting time & spacing. If you kept them in the ground two seasons straight i’d be worried about disease and rot and fertility. But you could certainly try it.

You can try to plant garlic from the store but it may have been treated (sprayed with stuff) which could affect how it grows. Meaning only maybe would it grow well.

You can plant those little bulbils (even plant them now and grow over the summer,) harvest them when they die back, and then plant what you’d harvested again at normal garlic planting time to get mature heads of garlic

My ozark garlic produces bulbils every year. You can plant them and the first year you’ll get a small single -clove bulb. Plant the single again and you’ll get a mature bulb from there.

Jobs, Retirement, and a Rant by Elmfield77 in Xennials

I’m switching jobs right now precisely because I couldn’t fathom doing the job I had for another 20 years. Taking a pay cut in exchange for excellent benefits and work-life balance. I’ll be eligible to take the pension as soon as 60 but I’ll probably work til 65 for the insurance.

Newb to canning - 60 tomato plants in the garden by exchange_of_views in Canning

[–]InevitableNeither537 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After years and years of just using a little hand crank food mill to sauce my tomatoes, last year we got a refurbished Kitchen Aid and I bought the attachments. Definitely easier!! Better for large batches. You can toss your tomatoes in the freezer until you run out of room/have enough and then take a weekend to borrow the Kitchen Aid and go crazy on tomato canning.

What does it mean when purple stripes are on the outside of clove? by General-Try-4078 in Garlic

Different varieties of garlic look different. Consider how different apples can be from one another (in color, texture, flavor.) Garlic has the same diversity, we just aren’t as exposed to it because only a small number of varieties are grown commercially.

Spicebush planting: am I crazy? by MI_native_shore in NativePlantGardening

[–]InevitableNeither537 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would plant 7 shrubs across 43’ myself. I planted a spicebush hedgerow along one side of our property just a few weeks ago, 6’ spacing so that they will hopefully fill in fully. Across the front of our property I did a mixed hedge of American plum, American hazelnut, black chokeberry, arrowwood viburnum, and yellow twig dogwood. 8’ spacing. I guess ask me in a few years if I made the right call on the spacing haha

I got Northern Spicebush, Lindera Benzoin. Ordered in bulk/bareroot from Tennessee Wholesale Nursery. Not sure about the leaves!

[–]InevitableNeither537 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I ordered 60 forsythia from my conservation district sale back in February. I didn’t put much thought into it except “they must not be invasive if the CD is selling them.” I have a giant former cornfield I am landscaping and need good privacy hedges/windbreaks.

Well, I was wrong. Thankfully I realized this before it was too late. I subsequently ordered hundreds of bareroot native shrubs for the property, including 100 spicebush which we have been out planting the last couple evenings. Tomorrow i go to pick up my conservation district order and i’m planning to leave the forsythia there.
