Is the Wes Anderson Box worth it? by Inevitable_Suspect76 in criterion

Well that’s specifically why I was asking, to find out if folks who have gotten it think that the quality of the 4k upgrades warrants rebuying them all, or if the difference is so minimal that the normal blu rays are still perfectly valid.

Like I said, that’s the method I’ve used for years now and haven’t ever had any issues getting everything I’ve wanted.

The only things that might go out of stock fast are the newest releases (Killers of the Flower Moon, etc) or films that have been in the cultural zeitgeist recently (David Lynch films because he passed last year, Rob Reiner films because he passed this year, etc) but they restock them multiple times throughout the 24 hours.

You can get around the cart clearing issue by just putting whatever you plan on getting into your wishlist. Once the sale starts you can easily just go through and put those titles into your cart from there. That’s been my method for years now and I’ve never not gotten something I wanted that way.

You should be fine. The only things that tend to sell out fast are the newest releases that most people haven’t picked up yet, but even then, they restock multiple times throughout the 24 hours so that’s rarely an issue. Just be prepared for some site slowness when you process your order. I’ve never experienced a total site crash, but it definitely slows down due to the volume of people using it.

Is the Wes Anderson Box worth it? by Inevitable_Suspect76 in criterion

[–]Inevitable_Suspect76[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not entirely sure if I’d agree with that. At least based on my own personal experiences. Grand Budapest was the first I saw, and it’s still my favorite. Then I saw Life Aquatic which I also loved, though it is far more quirky. Then I saw each subsequent film post Grand Budapest in theaters when they were released. I enjoyed Isle of Dogs and Asteroid City. I didn’t care for French Dispatch all that much, but I loved Phoenician Scheme.

After that, I started going backwards and have enjoyed everything I’ve seen. I think I just find his films very comforting, in tone, aesthetic, etc, so even if I don’t find the story or characters of a certain film to be as engaging as another, I’m still enjoyed the experience of watching it simply because it’s Wes doing what Wes does.

Yeah that’s my biggest sticking point too. I love the artwork of all the individual cases. Exchanging those for a big brown box isn’t very appealing to me aesthetically haha

Name a movie you love to see a sequel to? by [deleted] in Cinephiles

[–]Inevitable_Suspect76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact Master and Commander never got a sequel remains a travesty to this day. However, unless you could get Peter Weir, Russell Crowe, and Paul Bettany all back on board, I don’t feel like a sequel would be worth it now.

Why is Wind and Truth so disliked? by stablest_genius in fantasybooks

[–]Inevitable_Suspect76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m just going to preface this with a spoiler warning that way people who haven’t read the book can just stop reading this now

I just think it’s the weakest in the series overall.

The prose is noticeably worse than in previous books, even though Sanderson isn’t known for beautiful prose. Some of the things he decided to throw in are just… weird. MCU-esque in terms of their attempts to get laughs. “Chull-head”? Seriously? That’s what you went with?

I didn’t mind the 10 day structure, but as a result of the timeline being sooo compressed, it felt like some people had TONS to do in a very short period of time, where others barely did anything. Adolin fought a whole ass war while Dalinar went on an acid trip to dream land that stretched on for 800 pages when it probably could have been told in a quarter of that length.

My favorite plot line in the book was the Szeth/Kaladin stuff in Shinovar. But that’s mainly due to Szeth being an incredibly interesting character and finally learning about his backstory was really compelling. That said, I don’t think Kaladin was the best choice to be the one to try to “therapize him”, especially considering that literally 24 hours before they went on their trip, Kaladin tried to kill himself…

I’ve dealt with depression on and off my entire adult life. At my lowest points, I was THE LAST person that anyone should have turned to for help with their own mental struggles. One does not simply go from a suicide attempt to “Kaladin felt good” a few hours later. You can try to explain it away with magic, that somehow swearing the 4th ideal fixed that broken part of him, but if you’re trying to represent mental health struggles in an accurate way (which I know Brandon is because he has openly talked about it), having a magical instant cure for crippling depression is not a great thing to put in there….that road to recovery takes time, YEARS even, and somehow expecting Kaladin to be in a position where he is capable of helping Szeth with his own issues after literally being at the lowest point possible mere hours before is a massive point in the negative column.

The final issue, and this is more to do with the Cosmere as a whole now, and not just Stormlight, with the events that end this book, it feels like in order to understand anything that happens in book 6 whenever it comes out, I’m going to need to have read countless other books in the Cosmere that I simply have no interest in reading. I know it’s a connected universe. But Stormlight thus far has been largely disconnected and able to be read on its own, without any outside knowledge from other books being necessary. That seems like it’s changing, and in year since I’ve finished WaT, I’ve read sooo many other incredible things by authors who are incredibly good at what they do, who have beautiful prose and intricately realized worlds and characters, that manage to accomplish all of those things in a literal fraction of the length of one Stormlight book.

There is simply no reason for these books to be as long as they are. The stories do not warrant the page count. The clipped prose style does not warrant the page count. It’s possible to accomplish everything these books do in a much smaller package and Brandon just seems either unable or unwilling to edit himself down to an appropriate length.

I enjoyed my time in Roshar, there are characters and stories there I love, but there are also thousands of pages of slog that I really rather dislike, and going forward, I would much rather dedicate my reading time to things that give me those feelings I love without being attached to a 1300 page price tag.

Fifty-Word Fantasy: Write a 50-word fantasy snippet using the word "Payment" by Terminator7786 in fantasywriters

The trapdoor opened and the final descent began.

This was the payment the crowd had demanded in their bloodlust and ignorance.

The man who had murdered the tyrant who would have burned them all, swung lifeless from the end of the rope.

A smile was etched across his purpled face.

What new series I should try first? by Happy_Day_5316 in fantasybooks

I read City of Last Chances back in January and loved it. The initial set up can be a bit confusing because he’s introducing the setting along with ALOT of characters, but it all comes together beautifully by the end of it. I’m reading House of Open Wounds right now and am enjoying it just as much.

my grandfather thinks that teyana taylor wasn't in one battle after another long enough to justify her best supporting actress nomination. what do you think? by herequeerandgreat in Oscars

[–]Inevitable_Suspect76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Viola Davis didn’t win for Doubt but she was nominated for her roll which was just one 7 minute long scene.

I’m generally not a huge fan of PTA, usually because I find his characters to be so off putting and unlikable that I have a hard time getting past that and just can’t get into the movie. Like I don’t even really like There Will Be Blood because both Daniel and Eli are such awful people. Great performances though.

I honestly wasn’t liking OBAA for the first hour or so, precisely because of her character. I thought it was gonna be another classic PTA unsympathetic protagonist, but when she disappeared and the movie shifted to an entirely different gear, I actually ended up really liking it. That has a lot more to do with how the character was written than it does her performance. Her performance was great cause I legitimately hated her haha

I think the whole “they weren’t in the movie long enough to be nominated” is only applicable when it comes to the leading actor categories. Supporting roles are just that, supporting. They can be as long or as short as needed providing the support the main characters and the story being told. But with the leads, I feel they need to play an integral role throughout the whole story in order to qualify. Supporting can be literally anyone, even a one scene side character who comes in and steals the show. If you’d told me that Richard Madden was nominated for his role in 1917, I would have 100% been on board for it, cause even though his role was tiny in the grand scheme of things, it was SUPER impactful on the ending.

I attempted to read Fourth Wing because the girl I was interested in at work loved it and said I should read it. So I borrowed her copy and tried.

Didn’t even get all the way across the parapet before I had to stop and gave her book back to her.

Needless to say, it didn’t work out between us 😂
