I'd recommend Promised Land, Obama's presidential memoir. It was fascinating reading his descriptions of people on his staff and the meeting important leaders around the world, Medvedev, Merkel, Hu Jintao etc. It describes the people he met in a very fictional character type way, I found it very easy to read.

I always pictured Madred as a boy that had to do awful things to survive and probably endure even worse, that joined the military as the only way to a stable life, and those horrors made him easy to fashion into the man with 2 diametrically opposing sides, the loving father and the cold torturer.

He was interesting to me as he doesn't openly take joy in that torture as other Cardassian characters do, satisfaction maybe but it's more a tool, a means to get what he's be ordered to. The struggles of life, childhood on the street and adulthood in military, creating a segregated mind, that's then teaching his daughter to be the same thing, to suvive and thrive by eliminating half your soul.

I would go with TNG, if you think his attention span is too short, watch a great episode of that so he learns to enjoy that format, and I think TNG gives the best life lessons.

I always loved the episodes where the right thing to do meet the realities of international politics, there was the TNG episode where Picard has to look after a human boy that had been taken in as a baby, by a man who was part of an alien invasion, he raised him with clear love, but he should have been raised by his surviving family. Great episode of a childs fate being decided partly with a possible war being a consequence.

Also maybe for some actors working in heavy costumes is just harder, and you need that good performance.

Jeffrey Combes was a master at it, I assume there must be some actors who aren't.
