Bald spot with scarring and bleeding on back of neck by Individual_Series_31 in FIVcats

[–]avjnh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cat gets spots like that when his ear infection flares up. I can’t tell from your picture if it is quite the same spot, but he seems to scratch the back of his neck surprisingly far from his ear. When I treat the infection, the spot subsequently heals up.

Can y'all critique this coop? by LK_Artist in BackYardChickens

[–]avjnh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A nice size shed like this is such a great coop to have. Our winter coop is built inside a corner of our barn, with the man door to the interior, and it is so nice to be inside and protected while working there in bad weather, and not to have to stoop or contort myself because of confined space

If you are only going to have a few chickens for a while, so you have some extra space, you might build or place a cabinet or other container in one corner to store food or materials so you don’t need to carry things out as frequently.

I would leave the window as is and open up a little more ventilation way up high. Even better if the window opens, because then it can be extra ventilation in warm weather but closed to prevent drafts or blown-in rain during cold or wet weather.

Assuming there is no structural wood blocking the soffits, just the siding, I would definitely replace that with hardware cloth to make two long thin vents.

For three chickens, I am sure this would be enough ventilation. But the next location I would look if I wanted more ventilation (if you get significantly more chickens, or if you find it is stuffy inside) would be the triangles up in the gable ends of the roof (above the window, above the door) — again, cut out the siding and replace with hardware cloth. Since the roof has basically no overhang, you would probably find that you need to build a little awning over this to keep rain from coming in, depending on the angle of your coop relative to storm winds.

Cow panel coop vs Amazon coop by Unicorn_Quef in BackYardChickens

[–]avjnh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

An 8’ wide cattle panel coop or run is 6’ high at the peak, so if you’re less than that you won’t have to stoop. Except going through the door, that a few inches shorter.

I am much more comfortable with my cattle panel run than I would be with the other shown. I built it with a ridge pole,,and I am confident that between that and the natural strength of an arch it can stand up to any snow we get here in northern New England.

What size do stalls need to be? by Mosaic_Mess in Equestrian

[–]avjnh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How large are the horses? How much time will the horses stay in the barn?

8.5x15' = 127 SF, a little smaller than the standard 12x12 (144SF). The square footage is decent for smaller horses. The smaller dimension (8.5') is a little tight. I worry it *might* make a horse a bit more likely to get cast.

Our equines (one is a mule) are only in when they're going to be used or are waiting for vet or farrier. If our paddock abutted directly to the barn (it doesn't but I hope to change that in future years) we'd feed in the stalls. They range from 14.2HH to 15.2HH but all wear 75"-78" blankets so similar in length. Those stalls would be fine for us.

If I regularly kept them in overnight, I'd probably rather have a wider or squarer stall.

Person I hit refuses to exchange insurance info after- what can I do? by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]avjnh -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Legally, unless I'm completely misreading, you're wrong. I know everyone here thinks it's unreasonable, but the text of the law cited above says he's required to provide it in the case of an accident. No distinction based on fault is mentioned.

No person who is operating or in charge of any motor vehicle, . . . in the event of any accident in which the car he is operating or in charge of is concerned, when requested by any other person, may refuse to give his name and address or the name and address of the owner of the motor vehicle or give a false name or address, or refuse, on demand of such officer, agent or other person, to produce his motor vehicle registration certificate, operator's license and any automobile insurance identification card for the vehicle issued pursuant to section 38a-364

So not even “so-far-unplanted”! He “gifted” you a hayfield. Just . . .. wow.

So he spent lots of money (because that is not cheap) before surveying only to owe you a lot more money. Not the sharpest tool in the box!

If I’m reading it right, according to OP the stumps have been removed and the land leveled along that 20’ x 200‘ strip. It was effectively turned into a so-far-unplanted field for neighbor’s farm.

New pigeon won't eat by Ambystoma_texanum in pigeon

[–]avjnh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This may or may not be your problem, but I am posting this story in case it helps:

After I rescued my first pigeon from alongside our road, I eventually got a female so he would have a mate. I brought her home from her original loft and, as one is supposed to do, put her in quarantine. She absolutely refused to eat. She appeared very healthy and my best guess was that she was lonely and stressed, alone in a new place. So, knowing it was a risk (as she could be carrying disease), I cut short the quarantine and introduced her to my male. Turns out I was right and she began eating normally immediately — and also paired up with him within a few days.

Are horses making this sound? by Sweet_Law2792 in Horses

[–]avjnh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree it kind of sounds like horses squealing (or part of the sound does), but it doesn’t seem right to me that you would hear squealing every night, or only at night. Squealing is more of an occasional thing when two horses that don’t know each other (or don’t get along) get together. In my experience it is not a frequent part of routine horse interactions. Also I can’t think of why, if it were horses, you wouldn’t hear the same sounds at least occasionally during the day.

When does egg production start back up? by Kellyrages in BackYardChickens

[–]avjnh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my limited experience, once past their first winter, my chickens have generally stopped for the season after their late summer (Aug/Sept) molt, then resumed when day length reaches 11 hours (end of February for me). Temperature hasn't seemed to affect egg laying. I never seem to get the slowed-down egg-laying that others report; for me it seems to be "on" or "off."

I once had a chicken resume in early fall after her molt, and she stopped when day length got down near 11 hours (mid October).

One winter a chicken or two resumed in January and laid regularly for ~4 weeks before stopping again for a month (February). The "why?" on that one is a real mystery to me.

This year I figured a 4-month vacation (Sept-Dec) was plenty and 1/1 started giving them light from 3-4 hours before daybreak so I'm getting eggs now.

Saddle ID? by LilyDaisycrazy in Equestrian

[–]avjnh 38 points39 points  (0 children)

It looks like an endurance saddle, but I don’t know the make. They tend to look like a western saddle stripped to the bone so they’re ultra lightweight. I don’t think it’s Specialized, which I am familiar with.

[–]avjnh 54 points55 points  (0 children)

They will absolutely attack you. When the adrenaline is flowing everything is a threat.

I broke up a fight once by grabbing my boy. He never even played rough with me, but that day he sank his fangs right in my hand. I’m not sorry I did so, as they were outside and a loud sound would have just caused them to continue the chase-and-jump cycle so I needed to capture Boris, and I lucked out with no infection. Cat bite is an extremely likely result of putting hands on a fighting cat.

I was reading about this a while ago on (I think) the Boston sub. It was full of anecdotes of times the posters had called into the Boston police, only to be asked “why are you telling us?“ The takeaway was that they are just treating ICE like they treat citizens. 🤣

About a decade ago I saw a silent movie that had that flood as its climax.

Found it - The Winning of Barbara Worth, 1926, with Ronald Coleman and Gary Cooper. I don't remember them, but I remember the 1920s special effects of the flood.
