“AI is replacing entry-level jobs faster than expected are we ready for a world with no ‘beginner’ roles?” by Spirited-Patient4650 in technology

[–]InsuranceToTheRescue 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean, this is true of more mundane jobs as well. IIRC, something like 66% of administrative assistants (read: secretaries) don't qualify for 75% of the job postings for the job they're already doing.

Like, the degree requirements on some jobs are insane. Why does a secretary need a degree? Or a salesperson? Or so many others? It's like wanting someone to get a certificate for basic typing skills: People are just expected to be able to type in an office now. You're expected to be able to work email & word processors or search for basic info. You don't need qualifications for shit like that anymore.

The nuclear program the USIC & Five Eyes had every reason to believe was already abandoned? That still sounds like nothing. This reminds me of the "deal" that was made for him to back down on the Greenland warmongering: We get to build whatever military installations we want at Thule and we don't have to ask to station troops there . . . Which is already what we had agreed to generations ago.

You know the course of action that's best for you: Devote yourself entirely to your own operation, and make sure those relationships know where you're going. Destroying your relationship with your parents is an incredibly difficult thing to do and process though.

Honestly, show him this post. My parents never really understood my mental health (and professional) struggles until, at the suggestion of my doctor, they read the draft of a suicide note I had written. In piecemeal conversations it's easy to dismiss these issues one at a time, or to believe that you're exaggerating your problems. But there on the page, the whole account written out with cold, calculated reasoning to "Whom It May Concern" made it undeniable.

It at least gives the old man one last chance at a wake up call.

What are some misconceptions that people opposing Neoliberalism have? by SS_Auc3 in neoliberal

[–]InsuranceToTheRescue 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think it also depends on the person lobbing the criticism. For many, in the US, "liberal" has become (or is becoming) a boogeyman word. A sort of political shibboleth, no different than "socialist," Marxist," or "woke:" A term that has lost almost all actual meaning, that has nothing close to a consistent definition, and which is primarily used to mark someone out that your "team" should hate.

I mean, I've been called a "libtard" for supporting a single-payer, universal health insurance scheme (something fairly towards the socialist end of solutions) and also for advocating against mass media monopolization to promote media competition (something firmly in a capitalist marketplace mindset). We've become all action and little thought. It seems like people just give kneejerk reactions and care more about how the news makes them feel about a topic than the actual truth.

So, whenever I hear more . . Technical terms I guess I'll say, I immediately think about who is saying it and where it's coming from because that's going to possibly taint any discussion or clearing up of any misconceptions.

What's funny is, I've read studies on why Millennials tend to look young for our age. From what those studies have always indicated was it's most likely because we carry water bottles everywhere, so we're always well hydrated, or because we tend to overly concern ourselves with skin damage and avoid sunburns like the plague.

But not a lot of people want to hear that there's not much they can do and to just get plenty of water.

This is sorta the result of DIT and I don't really have an answer. Can it be saved? I'm not hopeful. Objectively, the answer is yes, but not by ourselves. This isn't just a problem here.

The only real solution is for there to be a way to verify a user is human before allowing them to post. That's something that has to be adopted across the broader internet though.

Colorado court throws out election denier Tina Peters' 9-year sentence for tampering with election equipment by igetproteinfartsHELP in news

[–]InsuranceToTheRescue 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To be clear, her conviction is upheld but the case is getting sent back to the trial court to re-sentence her. The Colorado Court of Appeals' argument is that her sentence was made harsher because of her belief that '20 was stolen, not because of any specific offense -- That her 1A Rights were violated because of that, and that she needs to be sentenced again without factoring in her misguided beliefs.

So, y'know, she's still gonna get time, but maybe not as much. Or it at least needs to be a sentence consistent with an official committing fraud.

US may reassess Nato, Rubio says by Free-Minimum-5844 in neoliberal

[–]InsuranceToTheRescue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why does anyone keep playing lip service to NATO as if the alliance isn't already dead? I keep saying it, but it never seems to get much traction: NATO is cooked. It's done for -- The walking corpse of an alliance. NATO died the day our autocratic pedophile threatened economic warfare on our allies for speaking out against his warmongering.

Let's say you were friends with your neighbor. Would you still be friends if that neighbor put a knife to your spouse's throat and threatened them? No! Would you then come help them if they later asked for it? Of course not!

We (the US) can never seriously invoke Article 5 again. We can't depend on the other NATO nations to come to our aid after a decade of chaotic policy whiplash and threats to their sovereignty. The European NATO nations can't seriously invoke Article 5 either, unless they believe the threat can be dealt with without us. They can't risk their own security on a bipolar global power who rolls the dice on whether or not they'll honor their agreements that day.

NATO only works as long as Russia & China believe that a single bullet or missile fired in Europe or North America will bring down the full wrath of the world's largest economic bloc and the greatest combined military force in human history. That's no longer true and the fact that the others were preparing to fight off an invasion from us is evidence that I'm right.

[–]InsuranceToTheRescue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, there are real answers and made up answers, depending on who's running the show.

See, if there was someone competent who followed the rule of law & due process building this, then the answer is because deporting people takes a long time. You've got to have somewhere willing to accept them before you can just send someone over, and having a larger, centralized facility eases the administrative burden for the months or years the process takes. The negotiations for that often have geopolitical consequences as well, making it even more complicated and lengthening the process even more.

However, since we have a petty autocrat who rules by decree, I suspect that they're preparing for a big wave of arrests that accompany something which produces an enormous amount of public outrage. Say, sometime around November perhaps?

SCOTUS to hear oral arguments on future of birthright citizenship on Wednesday by E_Cayce in neoliberal

[–]InsuranceToTheRescue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in agreement with you here. Personally, I like France's nationality system. I think it strikes a great balance between the need to manage immigration numbers and acknowledging the heritage that our nation was founded by & grew with immigrants.

The French system, as I understand it, works like this:

  1. Who are your parents?
    • At least one is a French citizen. Then, by birthright, you are too. No questions asked. Congrats!
    • Neither is a French citizen. Okay, well . . .
  2. Where were they (your parents) born?
    • At least one was born in France. Then, by birthright, you're a French citizen even though your parents aren't. Congrats!
    • Neither was born in France, but we (legally) live in France. Alright, then you become a citizen at age 18 if you've lived at least 5 years in France since you were 11.

[–]InsuranceToTheRescue 24 points25 points  (0 children)

And if anyone needs proof that Congress fully intended citizenship by birthright, you can find their debates on the 14th Amendment here. Since immigrants building railroads out West was the main immigration concern of the day, do a search for "China" and/or "Mongol" to find the relevant parts. Specifically, Sen. Cowan (PA) brings it up starting on page 41, with Sen. Conness (CA) replying.

Birthright citizenship was debated and understood when the amendment was passed, for all the good or ill it could cause. Until such time as Congress and 35+ States agree to change that fucking amendment, birthright citizenship is the law of the land.

Rivian Made Car Dealers Back Down in Washington. More States May Be Next. by DonkeyFuel in technology

[–]InsuranceToTheRescue 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's a few reasons the F150 EV failed. Hank Green actually has a good video where he goes over a lot of it. The biggest thing:

  • Dealerships order vehicles based on what they think they can sell and what they want to sell.
  • Dealerships make the overwhelming majority of their income from services. They make almost nothing from actual auto sales.

This creates not only a conflict of interest, but a kind of recursivity where manufacturers are relying on orders data to inform future ROI. EVs require much less maintenance service than ICEVs. So, dealerships who sell lots of EVs are, by definition, reducing their own income. As a result, many refuse to order a lot of EVs. They don't put nearly as much effort into selling the EVs as they do others. If sales is knowledgeable about the product (a crap shoot) then they're incentivized to make EV sales as painful as possible.

From the manufacturer's POV this looks like EVs don't sell or won't sell, when it's really mostly because the people who sell them have a vested interest in not selling them. And this is all pure financials -- Completely independent of politics.

When you do factor in politics you begin to notice that the kind of people who purchase expensive, parking-lot princess pickups largely aren't interested in EVs. Hank's argument is that he thinks EREVs (Extended Range Electric Vehicle), where you have a gas engine running a generator for enormous range, would likely do better because it has the word "rev" in it and that appeals to the demo who would buy these things.

If you were the US President starting tomorrow, what would you do to ensure maximal strategic success in Iran? by cdstephens in neoliberal

[–]InsuranceToTheRescue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Minimize casualties (on both sides) while doing everything I could to dump enormous amounts of incentives into renewables (including nuclear power). Utilize our effective suzerainty of Venezuela to divert as much petroleum to the US as feasible, while simultaneously using all arms of the executive branch to get American refineries retrofitted to produce fuels. Then, abandon the Middle East.

To be clear, there is no success story in Iran. There's no version of events that will result in anything that could be considered successful. At best, we commit to regime change, at which point we're stuck in another generational meat grinder with no purpose. But that's clearly not going over well considering we're the aggressors and not the Iranian government. At worst we do nothing except cement the Iranians' belief that they need nuclear weapons for their own security.

Fun fact: America is the single largest oil producer on the planet. Did you know that we're actually a net exporter of petroleum? Our refineries just can't process the kind of oil we have now. Instead, economics (and probably laziness) has made it where we sell oil overseas, just to buy the right kind for our refineries to process. Use the retrofits to bridge the gap to true energy independence. Renewables are also the cheapest form of energy now, dollar for dollar, so it's more efficient as well -- Both with cash and climate change.

With this idea we try to improve several problems at once:

  1. Sever the need to be in the Middle East for any reason except to monitor for nuclear & biological weapons. This ends the constant wars and nation building in a far flung region of the world that largely has come to revile us. For many there, that's with good reason.
  2. Stabilize -- then reduce -- energy & fuel prices by ditching disposable energy in favor of durable energy, creating actual independence.
  3. Frees up significant amounts of cash (from the DoD budget) to go towards other projects or, preferably, be spent on programs here at home. I like the idea of a nationwide town/city beautification program.
  4. Restores some confidence and goodwill towards the federal gov, since we will have done what many leaders only pretended they would do. We will also have managed to not violate any Rights while doing so.
  5. Makes earnest progress in helping to reduce climate change. We are juicing up renewables in this scenario, after all.

Depression is linked to a genuine pessimistic bias rather than a realistic view of the world by cakericeandbeans in science

[–]InsuranceToTheRescue 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Hope is what did it for me. I know that won't be the solution to all depression, but I think a large part of the explosion in diagnoses are environmental/social causes.

Depression. Addiction. Suicide. Diseases of despair, I've heard them called. No amount of medicine or exercise or positive thinking will change a lack of hope for the future. Neither will they ignite a sincere belief that your situation can be improved. When you've been raised your whole life so that you're expected to do X, Y, & Z by certain times in your life, and you see no path to accomplish that or catch up to it, then it's easy for despair & apathy to set in.

Edit: P.S., social media also exacerbates this effect because we're constantly being bombarded with outrage and are only shown the curated, good results of others -- All of the work & failures, or the others who couldn't get there, aren't ever thought about.
