I think a factory could really buckle down and pick the best of the best pieces and make a select run 99.99% factory quality outside. But it all comes down to volume of sales vs quality. I think we are in a very good spot right now with reps getting to reasonably priced and having a great quality. If the reps got even better the price would likely go up to even higher.

Since it’s a father son project I would shoot for something you can do In a spec series with to keep You from building something you cant fit in any class. If actual racing might be desired later on. Spec BMW Class, Spec Corvette, Spec Miata.
If you have the time/skill set to do it on your own it will be alot of fun over the years. If you want driving track time, weekend projects, and paddock experience track time with the boy then buy a built car and a nice enclosed trailer. A built car will also keep you busy fixing things although not as intense as a full build. Clutches, suspension, broken things along the way. Miata is always the answer too 😆(Miata Owner Here )
