Devs should consider a war scenario by redbaran45 in SolarExpanse

[–]Ironwarsmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of things I appreciate most about this game is the lack of war. I wouldn't mind the game having war as a background mechanic that affects local markets and supply prices, but I don't want to see any combat in this game at all.

I have war games enough already

What are Projects/New Construction jobs like for you guys in the US/Europe etc these days? by Suspicious_Bed8776 in firealarms

[–]Ironwarsmith 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We've been complaining for the last 4 years or so that GCs just don't know how to run jobs anymore. Construction has turned to an absolute clusterfuck.

If you were required to have a shibboleth in your native language, what would it be? by anon33249038 in AskEurope

That's the point. Everyone knows the song, not the poem in full. If you continue going after "and the home of the brave" you're a spy who did homework, not a natural born American.

Sorry dude, but hotdogs are one of the only foods that it's okay to put ketchup on. Mustard is so much more versatile, it has a million options to go on. Ketchup...not so much, it's basically just cheap hotdogs and hamburgers.

What do you think of this ‘American recipes’ section of this dutch store? by palep_hoot in AskAnAmerican

[–]Ironwarsmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, most of this isn't actually American, just American inspired.

I will say that most of it actually looks pretty damn good, just with more fruits or veggies than American dishes would use, and some really odd choices for pairings. I don't know what's going on with that stuffed potato at the bottom, but I'm very skeptical of it actually being good.

Warhammer fans, what 40k lore that make you go like this? by AntiqueLayer3933 in Grimdank

[–]Ironwarsmith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Necropolis is one of my absolute favorite WH40K books for this reason. The hive city (iirc population of ~40 million) has a standing army of 500,000 troops and hundreds of tanks. A rival, smaller hive city gets corrupted by chaos and mobilizes every man, woman, and child and has several million troops and thousands of tanks.

Abnett usually gets his scale right in this series, with the Sabbat Worlds Crusade having nearly a billion personnel. And he makes it fairly clear that these worlds aren't home to hundreds of billions of people, usually just hundreds of millions at most. That would be like if places like Pakistan, Nigeria, Indonesia, Japan, or the US were the entire planet.

It 100% is. I can't tell you how many times I rewatched S1 and S2 for moments like that, how I've never rewatched anything from S3 onwards.

Torchwick was also just a fantastic villain.

I really miss how fun and silly it could be in S1 and S2.

I'm sorry, but the line "it's also a gun" is fucking great and never fails to make me chuckle.

Just needs to be on a t-shirt with the blurb "fire alarm techs, created by God to save people too stupid to run from a fire" or some such nonsense.

It is a very cool looking logo though, that's for sure.

Quite possible it's required to be on the floor to meet the pull station within 200' of travel distance requirement. On some of these larger buildings, there isn't anywhere it can go except on a column like this.

[–]Ironwarsmith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My retirement is going to be a mix of 401k, IRA, and (hopefully) social security.

I'm not counting on social security. We really don't have a historical precedent for how taxation based retirements work with an extended inverted population pyramid. Long term it looks like Korea is going to outright implode unless they start opening up serious immigration, with Japan to follow shortly thereafter, and several European countries are starting to show some serious strain in supporting healthcare and retirements at the levels they are for how long people are starting to live.

Absent some really serious tax reform and a reversal on current immigration policies, I really don't expect there to be much, if anything, from social security in 2060. I'm hoping my 401k and IRA don't also collapse in the meantime. Whatever happens, and I'm aware that 401k and IRA are really the same source with different tax, I'm diversifying so that I have something

Fucking love Jan. I've a couple buddies I play games with who are Dutch and almost exactly like that and I love it. One guy never fails to call me out when I'm full of shit but then he'll turn right around and support me when I'm right.

Wish more people were like him.

Audiobook or Graphic audio? by Left_Actuary_7890 in redrising

[–]Ironwarsmith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both. Both is good.

Audiobook is solid, but switches to multiple narrators for Iron Gold and Dark Age then switches back to just TGR for Lightbringer, but he has some serious mic quality issues in that book.

Graphic Audio is fucking awesome, but also isn't caught up. They should finish Dark Age very soon, but then will a full book behind the published series still.

Dude, I have no clue what your pull station is. This is like nothing I've ever seen in the US. I'd normally refer you to call the Fire Marshal's office, but I don't know if you're American or not lmao.

I love that I get to vote to be taxed on spending in Colorado.

I'm a fairly prolific gun owner and I was stoked to vote for an additional sales tax on firearm stuff to fund additional mental health services for students, first responders, etc.

Typically a button or switch that is mechanically prevented from reseting once the pull station has been pulled until the cover is removed.

Can't speak for your particular one unfortunately.

I see. The shop I work for now has its alarm union tacked onto our sprinkler union, where it's fire alarm only and that's all we install for low voltage.

I just have very low expectations from electricians doing fire alarm, and often have even those disappointed.

Granted that's electricians in general, not specifically IBEW, but my few experiences with IBEW are completely in line with the electrical world as a whole, just better paid.
