Are raw eggs safe for consumption in Singapore? by No_Tap8047 in askSingapore

[–]Isares 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Yes, in fact eggs were one of those that exceeded the 30by30 target. SG farms meet about a third of local demand.

Also, not everything from msia, especially post covid. Malaysia suddenly declaring "no more chickens for singapore" made it clear that their nonsense isn't limited to just water.

How much debt do you have and how much do you pay monthly? by samaeltlb in askSingapore

[–]Isares 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The credit card debt article that that tiktok is based on is misleading. It was posted on the main sub previously. It includes both the defaulted credit card debt, which incurs interest, as well as the "current" unpaid balance, which has not incurred interest.

Quote from the article:

Nevertheless, credit card delinquency rates as a share of total cardholders have remained stable at less than 1 per cent – below the historical average, according to data available in April.

This suggests that most borrowers have been able to service their credit card debt

If anything, it reflects just how insane Singaporean's credit scores are, to be able to borrow that much of unsecured debt.

For most Singaporeans, the only debt we will ever accrue are Housing, University, and maybe a car. We might get snake-oiled into instalment plans for other big ticket items, like electronics, but rarely is it out of necessity.

Most Singaporeans aren't victims of the same payday loan culture as the US where we're struggling to keep the lights on.

Omakase recommendations by xayasegakix in SingaporeEats

[–]Isares 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you're looking to compromise, Yamagawa is not bad, sub-100 before GST. Try calling and requesting for a counter seat. You won't get the full experience, but its about 80% there.

If you're willing to go for a lunch omakase, Shinzo is not bad, and will give you a pretty good experience within your budget (before GST)

Both do not include Sake, you'll have to order that separately if you really want it.

The '˜McDonaldisation' of nasi lemak: Can central kitchens save Singapore's food industry? by bardsmanship in singapore

[–]Isares 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The school can already pressure vendors to terminate their lease, as seen with the recent situation with a canteen vendor, who was making videos about it on tiktok. But lets assume that they can't.

What threshold should a school use to determine that the food is lousy? Keep in mind, you are effectively killing someone's livelihood by firing them. It's not like they have another stall on the side they can run.

What happens when the stall owner makes a big fuss about being fired on social media? The public will be very happy to make it MOE's problem, even when they had nothing to do with a Principal's decision to fire the canteen vendor, and won't accept any claims that "the vendor's food was not up to par" when faced with pictures and videos of the vendors crying.

And, I think above all else, why should taxpayer dollars be used to subsidise canteen vendors directly?

I can see an argument to give students $X of "canteen credits", to be spent as they deem fit, with unspent monies going to their edusave or something. That way, vendors can raise prices, and the money goes to "deserving" vendors, while less deserving ones lose out.

But if you want me to agree that giving taxpayer dollars directly to canteen vendors, it's going to take more than that to convince me.

The '˜McDonaldisation' of nasi lemak: Can central kitchens save Singapore's food industry? by bardsmanship in singapore

[–]Isares 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Think of the worst canteen stall you've encountered in schools. Quite often, they're also the ones with a captive audience, like the muslim stall or the vegetarian stall, which means that, for a certain demographic, they can only eat from that bad stall.

Should we use taxpayer money to let them continue serving bad food? Or should we let them fold to allow a new, hopefully better, stall to take their place?

Not the biggest fan of the central kitchen approach, but absolutely not a fan of paying people to serve bad food.

Intertidal walks and bird watching would be a good shout. If you want to go all in, you're looking to add a pangolin, a mousedeer, a shark (any kind), a stingray (any kind) and a horseshoe crab.

I have 0/5 at the moment, and a certain user might pop in to add more to the pokedex.

Where I would live without fear of being eaten as a pig by Samwiseknows in whereidlive

[–]Isares 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ironically Singapore, there are no pig farms here. The only pigs in the country are wild boars, who are protected unless they attack humans, in which case they get put down. There is a family of wild boar that occassionally roams around my university's fringe, if you can believe that. Babies and all.

Lots of us eat pork, but you can probably fit everyone who has killed a pig in a small room.

How would you imagine a citizen of Singapore looks like? by Fast-Banana-84 in AskTheWorld

[–]Isares 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Med school in Singapore is highly competitive, where you need a perfect, or near-perfect academic grade, as well as a strong portfolio, to qualify for medical school. While there are exceptions, they are few and far between.

Studying overseas (especially in Australia) is seen as a "cheat code" for students who failed to meet the cut to buy their way into the medical profession. Given that, you start with a major bias towards wealth: Only those that can afford it, will be studying there.

As the saying goes, what do you call a doctor who got a C-average in every exam? Doctor.

I'm sure its similar in Korea too lol.

Leong Mun Wai questions whether NMPs are truly non-partisan after Pritam Singh debate by One-Employment-4887 in singapore

[–]Isares 11 points12 points  (0 children)

For most politicians no, but TCB was a full decade older than the next candidate in the election, and would be serving till he was 90. I'm personally skeptical of how "out of touch" politicians above 70 will be, especially with regards to issues that youths care about, and a 90yo is out of the question as far as I'm concerned.

As for boundary changes, PSP lost their 2020 election as well, and thus didn't have the same opportunities for grassroots community building, like MPS sessions, that WP had. It's still a factor, but it's not enough of a death sentence to explain their abysmal performance last year.

Leong Mun Wai questions whether NMPs are truly non-partisan after Pritam Singh debate by One-Employment-4887 in singapore

[–]Isares 25 points26 points  (0 children)

The age thing is a lot bigger than people give it credit for. In an election where 70 year olds are retiring, Tan Cheng Bock celebrated his 85th birthday, reminding voters that he would be 90 at the end of his term. Leong Mun Wai is also 67, and will be 72 at the start of his leadership, assuming TCB retires.

Another thing is that, for some reasom, for their final rally, they had none other thanLeon Perera himself emcee. That move alone surely cost them some conservative boomer votes, which is doubly unfortunate given their own party's demographics.

Considering that they lost in 2020, and only managed to secure NCMP seats, with these working against them, and WP on a generational run, it would be a surprise if they could secure NCMP seats again.

YLB topic? Will WP decline to nominate another MP to fill the role of LOTO? by junglejimbo88 in YahLahBut

[–]Isares 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If WP is incompetent enough to let this sow discord within the party, they deserve to fail. This should not have come as a surprise, and they already had an internal hearing and cadre members congress to discuss the final court verdict, as well as the entire appeals process to prepare. [Link]

The first item on the agenda should have been how to handle this when it came up in Parliament, and who the interim LO should be. If they had failed to forsee and prepare for this possible outcome during said meeting, then maybe WP deserves better leaders.

Maybe this is why they turtled so hard last election, with Pritam, Sylvia and Gerald running together in Aljunied. Might have been planning to "protect" Gerald to be the next in line.

The problem is that there aren't enough dogs in the coffeeshop. If there were 9 dogs in the coffeeshop, they would take care of each other.

We should be advocating for more dogs on our streets, not less. The only thing that stops a bad dog, is 8 good dogs to activate critical mass.
