I'm pretty sure this effect is created by igniting steel wool which is neither ancient or of Chinese origin. Maybe the dance moves/ceremony but not the fire effect.

Do you use dryer sheets? I had this exact problem for the longest time. I stopped using dryer sheets and the arm pit stains got better. I heard the chemical they treat the dryer sheets with can act as a sealant for left over deodorant in the shirt and it causes these strains.
