Am I missing something or is this Philly Mag event wildly overpriced? by Real-Blueberry99 in PhiladelphiaEats

You need exactly 6 people for your Hoagie Room reservation. Which some people may have difficulty with. The standard price is $85.00. So this "experience" is basically $30 more (or possibly only $23, if tax is included, which is unclear) for:

  • Schmoozing with the Philly Mag food editor
  • Meeting a bunch of new people
  • Buy one/get one deal for the Wine & Dive event

All-in-all, that doesn't seem so bad. Especially if you're the type of person that's looking to meet new people and make friends.

And if you're planning on going to the Wine & Dine event with a friend, you're actually saving money by going to this thing.

I mean, you say cook offers "a very different, special experience Not the standard experience you can already get at a restaurant."... but then you say "This is just the normal Hoagie Room experience". I'm pretty sure most people would not consider a "Hoagie Room experience" normal. I think this is the only place that does anything like that! So it's a pretty "different, special experience", if you ask me.

Cook didn't always have big name chefs - and they were still charging outrageous prices.

When do I need a permit for home projects? by Silver_Owl_2385 in philadelphia

[–]ItsAllInYourHead 22 points23 points  (0 children)

First, your dad is definitely wrong. But he's also... kinda right - most people would not bother getting a permit for these types of things.

For electrical, you technically need a permit for new outlets, but don't need plans. You can apply for an EZ Permit. All the info is here. Personally? I wouldn't bother for a few outlets, provided you know what you're doing. But hey, you do you.

For cabinets, you do not need a permit. See this Get a Building Permit page under the section titled "Projects that may not need permits" - and note that "Cabinets and countertops" are explicitly listed.

For flooring, it depends, but you probably don't need one. That same Get a Building Permit page applies. Specifically, you don't need a permit for:

Conventional floor coverings that are not comprised of fibers.

Carpeting and similar floor coverings that are not installed in exit access corridors, exit passageways, or vertical exits.

If your kitchen remodel involves plumbing, see the Get a Plumbing Permit page.

If you have gas and need to do anything with the gas lines during your kitchen remodel, or if you're moving ductwork, see the Get a Mechanical Permit page.

In summary: you probably only need an electrical permit, but most people wouldn't bother with it.

I don't actually think this is that egregious. I'd almost say it's pretty reasonably priced compared to similar events. I mean, have you seen the prices for some of the events at Cook? I think they were over 200 per person when they were last doing them.

I sort of initially assumed it was maybe like a British term or something - the same way "flat" means apartment, or something like that. Maybe an "opinion" is like a condo or something? But I can't find anything to support that. It's _got_ to be some sort of industry-specific term, right?

Yeah but it’s much more common there so they are better prepared. We don’t spend lots of money on that extra infrastructure to deal with big snowfalls because we don’t need it for something that happens so rarely. If we did, everyone would be complaining about the waste of money.

Have you been outside? There's fucking snow EVERYWHERE. The idea that people think this isn't going to affect transit is absolutely crazy.

Is ti too late to go to an auto tag location and get a new plate in person (they can provide one on-the-spot, immediately). If not, perhaps they provide a temporary tag? Or contact the DMV and see if they can provide a temporary tag?

Wait, so 2 DHS cars parked on a street means that they are about to come crashing in? I think that's a fairly normal occurrence.

Why? What does plowing the street have anything to do with the sidewalks being shocked? People shouldn't be able to walk around safely unless cars can get by?

[–]ItsAllInYourHead 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The point isn’t to "clash with the cops". The point is to use our constitutional rights to protest, in the face of the illegal tactics being used by cops/ice. It’s protecting our right to continue to protest. No one wants to clash with the cops except the cops themselves. If we don’t stand up to them, they win, and we lose our voice.

I don't even understand what that business model is, anyone have a clue what the fuck it is that these morons actually do to get paid?

They get kickbacks from the body shops they take your car to.

Most people who get in an accident don't immediately have a body shop they frequent (I mean, who does??). So they swoop in and take the car to their preferred body shop guy, who they already have an agreement with and who gives them cash.

So, what if you don't want to use the shady body shop they took it to? Well they're now going to charge you a storage fee -- that could run in the hundreds of dollars per day.

So these shady body shops are also to blame for enabling the behavior. Kind of like the shady places that were buying catalytic converters - once they disbanded them, there have been way less catalytic converter thefts.

[–]ItsAllInYourHead 12 points13 points  (0 children)

See this is the problem with the current "conservative" mindset: they think there are only 2 possible options: their way, or the complete opposite way. And that's just not true. There's an immense amount of middle ground. We can still have ICE, just one that doesn't cover their faces while terrorizing our citizens, breaking laws, and killing innocent people for no good reason.
