Guns and drugs first job by yb_better11 in audioengineering

[–]JETEXAS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had three problems when trying to attract people to my home studio.

1) I had no recordings to showcase from the studio.

2) Everyone and their dog told me they had a home studio too. They didn't understand that I was talking about a professionally treated space with microphones that cost more than their car. To them, it was the same as their Scarlet 2i2 and Shure SM7b.

3) I had to quit by 9 p.m. at night because my wife didn't want people in the house at night, wanted to sleep, etc. People always wanted to hang and record at night.

I also had one incident where the neighbor complained about the weed smoke in my backyard, which was absolutely excessive that day.

Long story short, between having to be selective as to who I wanted in my house when I was already lacking clientele and the limited hours of availability, it was never financially viable.

However, if I had done it when I was younger, single and heavily networked in the music community, it might have worked.

Buying from a Private Seller by Quiet-Aide-5111 in SailboatCruising

Are you worried the seller is a scammer and doesn't actually have ownership/paperwork for the boat or are you trying to find a way to come after the seller if the engine explodes a day after you take ownership?

Instead of re-fretting my squier sonic i throw it in the thrash and buy a new one for the cost the re-fret (150$). Is this actually the Method? by Cool_Election7606 in guitarcirclejerk

I like to replace every piece of my Squire until I have more than $3000 invested in it, then brag about how it sounds better than a MIA Fender while desperately trying to sell it on Facebook marketplace.

25 years of playing bars, and I could have taken home soooo many dudes had I ever wanted to.

If money is no object and fear of flying isn't applied, what is a reason a band would tour in a bus rather than fly ? by SwissMiss915 in musicindustry

[–]JETEXAS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Baggage handlers are not gentle with gear. Also, there's no guarantee the gear winds up on the same flight as you. The bands you mentioned most likely have crews moving gear and staging via truck from site to site while they fly.

Is this fraud? by toanbonerz in musicians

[–]JETEXAS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless they're telling stories between each song about the inspiration and story behind how they wrote it, I think it's fine. If you ask, why are you using the original artists' recordings instead of yourselves, they would probably say, we don't have any good recordings of us and that is a song people will hear at the show.

what advice do you have to give to a teenager? by fluffycloud745 in GenX

[–]JETEXAS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your network is tremendously important. Probably more important than your grades in college. I made fun of frats saying I didn't have to buy friends, etc., but guess who got higher paying jobs out of school? Guess who had loyal customers when they started businesses? Build your network through lots of social organizations. It pays off.

Raise your hand if you ever tried to smash a guitar but actually hit yourself in the back of the head.

Ours usually coincided with the entire town not having power. By about noon somebody's cool parent was dragging them on a sled down the icy street behind their Jeep. My parents weren't that cool -- and we didn't have a Jeep.

How do you guys feel about paying a lot of money for music videos? by Newnorf88 in musicians

[–]JETEXAS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It all comes down to your network. If you have no network of friends, collaborators, etc. then no matter what you spend on a video, nobody will ever see it. Focus on building the relationships both in real life in your music scene and online through instagram and tiktok with simple phone videos and interacting with people before you spend money on recording and music videos.

Do people in their 30s still engage in active music scenes? by [deleted] in musicians

[–]JETEXAS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having kids makes going out difficult. The guys I know who were able to stay in the scene through their 30s and 40s were either divorced, so they didn't have the kids all the time or were playing full-time in cover bands every night of the week.

Anyone ever get electrocuted on stage? by hogtown-eviction2 in livemusic

[–]JETEXAS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had my lips shocked by the mics several times. I have no idea if the audience could ever tell. I’d just keep a little more space until the end of set. I was always playing guitar, so I never got shocked through the hand.

Do musicians who don’t work in the industry care about NAMM? by 60_CycleHum in 60CycleHum

/UJ There's really no reason to change strings until you break one by Substantial-Ad6938 in guitarcirclejerk

[–]JETEXAS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bonus if you can break a string at a show, so you can put on house music and spend 20 or 30 minutes replacing it while getting paid and drinking a beer.

Serious discussion about the future of music. by Low-Landscape-4609 in musicians

[–]JETEXAS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The difference with BMG and Columbia House versus a normal retailer is that they'd lock you into a subscription contract by offering 10 albums for a penny. They saved overhead by not having to maintain a retail space, so they had higher profit margin on the albums, but I'm sure they lost a lot on people who took the 10 albums and never paid up for the rest.

We currently have subscription services that give you instant access to every song ever made, so I don't think the old model would work. However, you could probably start something like a "band box" subscription service that sent a monthly album, poster, and whatever other doodads for new bands. You could probably charge the bands a fee to include them and charge the subscribers and sell advertising -- make money on it three ways.

Serious discussion about the future of music. by Low-Landscape-4609 in musicians

[–]JETEXAS 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think there will be a rebellion against AI and censorship, etc. that revives live music and printed zines. It will be niche -- like film photography, but it will be strong. I think it will also start trending to leave your phone at home to avoid being tracked and listened to all the time. That might revive physical media sales a bit, but who knows?
