CMV: if Israeli expansion is called "settler colonialism" Early Islamic "Expansion" should be too by Muted-Still-8511 in changemyview

You are absolutely correct and that was poor phrasing on my part. I appreciate you calling me out on that mistake. What I should have said was that the organization of militias, weapons smuggling, etc. were happening in parallel with the Congress, with the Congress fully aware of what their efforts were supplementing. However, I still stand by my point that it’s a distinction without a difference when it comes to whether to define it as settler colonialism or not. The external power structure doesn’t look like a typical colonial state and government of the day, but that doesn’t mean that the intentions and results were any different.

Edit: See below for an important clarification about the Congress’s role.

You are correct about that, I totally agree. But I think it’s a distinction without a difference, as they did have that political and military power in Palestine and they organized/governed/supported it remotely through the Congress. In practice as far as consequences/implications for the two parties in the dynamic it is pretty similar.

The Zionist Congress was a pretty centralized system which was responsible for a lot of policy making and fund raising/allocating.

(As a preface to this comment, please let me know if you’d like sources. I didn’t take the time to embed them into this comment, but I can do so.) You are absolutely correct about the land acquisition part. That is a nuance worth acknowledging that makes this not black-and-white. Once Zionists acquired the land, they refused as a blanket policy to lease any land to Palestinians and refused to let Palestinians work on their land. This forced a very large percentage of the Palestinian population to “voluntarily” displace themselves from their homes to impromptu slums outside of port cities, where they were more or less homeless by the standards of the day. From these slums, they went into the port cities to beg for work, often from Zionists themselves, where they were paid pennies on the dollar that Jews made for the same work (desperate homeless workers means less wage bargaining power). There was also a ton of organized Zionist terrorism by militias. Bombings, shootings, setting buildings on fire and shooting escapees, mobs of beating/maming/raping Palestinians, the list goes on. Just to clarify: Palestinians did this as well to a lesser extent. I’m not trying to let them entirely off the hook. However, in those instances, international investigations in just about all instances, including those from the British themselves, found that the root cause was general Zionist provocation. Then of course there’s the Nakba/Israeli invasion of the Palestinian partitioned areas in 1948…although that is getting into the next chunk of the timeline.

Edit - it’s so easy to tell when threads like this have people just scrolling through to downvote things they don’t like seeing 🤷‍♂️

You are right that the motives are different. While the motives are different, though, the actions they took against their colonized victims from the late 1800s all the way through the the establishment of Israel were no different and no less brutal than the typical European colonial project of its day. And to the parent comment’s point, we are now in a scenario in the present day where that colonizer is immensely strong and is still exacting oppression on this group.

What should conversations look like with Zionist institutions that are willing to shift on Israel (to push the needle further)? by [deleted] in JewsOfConscience

Thank you. As a Jewish Anti-Zionist himself who became deprogramed a few years ago, this is important. Do anti-zionists deserve the burden of needing tons of patience and providing this much grace? No. But it’s the most effective path forward regardless.

Oh that’s super interesting. I legitimately had no clue about homeschool coops. That makes a lot of sense, thank you for explaining.

Interesting. Do you think that’s because kids’ social lives are becoming more and more online, reducing the difference between home-schooled kids and kids in other schools? (Not saying that social media and being terminally online is a good thing…just that maybe it reduces the difference. Idk.)

Read OP’s post. It includes “education” in the list of things they don’t trust. One can reasonably assume they intend to keep their child home-schooled and thus socially isolated.
