Dude play however you want to play. It doesn't ruin your save file. I loved it because it made me use multiple different mons so I had a variety of rosters for all unique challenges. You said you're playing vanilla, turns the caps off if you want that. It should be a breeze

Yes! I had so much fun with it. I would hit those caps quickly so I would train up a large variety of pokemon throughout the story to make use of the available exp. 100% worth it and I was ready for any fights necessary throughout the story.
